good watch for any moshi fan

With my kids currently coveting anything, and everything, Moshi Monster related we've already found out the hard way that the quality of Mind Candy products can vary. This watch is one of the better items that you can buy in my opinion - it's a child's watch that is battery operated and easy to wear. At £10 it's also fairly good value for money and sure to be loved by any Moshi fan.

The watch is available in a number of different designs - my kids chose a "foodies" themed watch which has a pink strap with foodie moshlings printed on it (if you are a Moshi fan you will know what this means) and a yellow casing around the face, and a "fishies" themed watch which has a blue bracelet. All the watches have a metal watch body which fits into a rubber surround. The face is white with "moshi monsters" printed on the middle in black - the numbers are printed around the watch face, also in black and are clear and easy to read.

The watch comes supplied with batteries and full instructions in a blister pack. To set the time you simply lift the watch body out of the surround and you pull out a little tab to change the position of the hands like you would do with any watch. I like the fact that the watch face is traditional as I think it's great for children to learn how to tell the time properly rather than the digital way, though I would prefer it if the minutes were shown on the face as opposed to just the digits 1-12. There is, however, a second hand on the watch as well as those showing the hours and minutes, and the movement is surprisingly smooth and quiet, and the watch body itself seems pretty well made with its stainless steel back. It doesn't have a loud tick and has a LR44 replaceable battery. It's called a "slap watch" as there is no fastening on the watch as such, the bracelet is rubber coated and seems to have a metal core - when supplied it's flat as in the picture and it snaps onto place and wraps around your wrist. It's really easy for children to do and quite clever as the strap fits to the size of your wrist - I've tried it myself and its surprisingly comfortable and also, secure - my children have worn these extensively and they have never fallen off. Predictably they love the watches and are really proud to wear them.

Considering this is a child's watch the watch face is actually quite big - the face is 3cm approximately in diameter and 1.4cm deep. This gives it quite a chunky look, which my kids like, but it does mean I won't let them wear them to school as they are not the most discrete of watches! One thing I don't like about the watch is the selling point of it being "interchangeable" - as with many Moshi items it's billed as collectible, with the watches we have being series 1. Though you can take the watch body out of the strap fairly easily you can't - as far as I am aware - buy separate bracelets which makes this claim a bit silly in my opinion, in all honesty there's a limit to how many near identical Moshi monsters I'd want my children to collect and I think we reached it when we bought the first one! The interchangeable part of the watch doesn't come out so easily that we have lost either of them so far, however this could be a risk and again isn't a great selling point in my opinion. Apart from the somewhat impractical interchangeability claims, you do get a card containing a code with the watch, which means you get a virtual watch for your moshi room if you have a moshi monster account (as a member or not), which is a nice touch.

Gimmicks aside, this is a nice watch for the price which wears well - ours have suffered nothing more than a few bits of scratching on the printed bracelets and no scratching on what appears to be quite a solid plastic clear face. The instructions it comes with are minimal but clear and explain how to use the watch adequately.

Overall I think this watch is a good buy for any Moshi fan - I just won't be encouraging my children to collect more watches and will be reserving their use for out of school. I'm pretty sure this watch will outlast the Moshi craze and on that basis I am happy to recommend it.
