Can work well for some and is worth considering

Evening Primrose Oil has been hailed as a fantastic product that can be very beneficial for women of all ages to take. Some of those claims are based in fact and some based in fiction. The pretty yellow flower of the Evening Primrose (also known as Oenothera biennis) is the reason for the name we now associate with it, but it is in fact part of the willow family not part of the primrose family. The Evening Primrose Oil that we use, is extracted from the seeds of the flower.

      **********************************************************
Evening Primrose was first used and appreciated by native americans, who used it to treat knocks and swellings. In the 17th C it became a popular folk remedy known to all as 'Kings cure all', I have no idea if the King used it and gave it the name of if it was just the king of cures at the time, but it does show that even in the 17th C people recognized it could be of benefit.

Today Evening Primrose Oil is used in a variety of products including skin care products and health supplements. Evening Primrose has a high concentration of gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, which is a fatty acid that has been used in health products which claim to help reduce inflammation and as a help for people with auto immune diseases. Its use in skin care has been a success too as Evening Primrose is also a source of vitamin E which is widely used for its beneficial skin rejuvenating properties.

      **********************************************************
There are known side effects that you could experience when using Evening Primrose Oil and one of these is itching of the skin. If you do notice such symptoms its wise to stop taking or using the product and seek medical advice. As with any supplement taken orally its always worth discussing this with your health care advisor or GP prior to taking anything.

The oil when taken orally has been claimed to be of benefit for Premenstrual Syndrome (also known as PMS) Eczema and other skin disorders such as Psoriasis. Its claimed it can reduce Cholesterol and Blood Pressure, it is also taken as a help for Rheumatoid Arthritis and even to treat Alcoholism and to help the boost the Immune System.

      **********************************************************
I have bought Evening Primrose from Boots as a small slightly yellow toned oil which is contained within a clear capsule. I only paid £1.99 for 60 x 300mg capsules. They came in a white tube with a yellow lid and were part of the boots Essentials supplements range.

I feel the range offers very good value as it is often cheaper than many other branded varieties and its one that I usually seek out first because of that. The capsules are suitable for adults and children over the age of 12 only and should not be given to younger children.

I have taken the capsules mainly for their claimed skin boosting effects and have also tried some of the Boots Evening Primrose skin care which is rather nice and also keenly priced.

      **********************************************************
There is a really nice Oil Of Evening Primrose Talc which Boots sell, it comes in a simple yellow plastic container which has an Evening Primrose Flower on the front. You get 75g of talc for just £1.29 and it has a nice soft texture and smell that makes it pleasant to use. I like this product and would recommend it.

The Evening Primrose Moisturising Shower Creme from the same range is also very nice and light on the skin and produces a soft lather that moisturises and cleans. I recall paying around £1.10 for a 250ml shower sized squeezy bottle that can be hung up in the shower for ease of use. Again if you are thinking of trying this, do look out for its distinctive yellow pack with the flower on the front.

      **********************************************************
Evening Primrose is used in so many products and the ones I have listed here are just some of the ones that I have experience of. I feel that Evening Primrose can be of benefit to some people and the fact that its used in skin care products too is something that I like. As such my rating for Evening Primrose is 5 stars.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Combating the effects of dry, itchy skin isn't just about what creams and body lotions we use, it's also about what we put into our bodies. I discovered Evening Primrose Oil whilst surfing the internet for a supplement to help my dry skin, and I'm so glad I did. For example, did you know that Evening Primrose Oil contains a rich source of the fatty acid Gamma Linolenic Acid (GMA), a special fatty acid which helps to lock moisture into the skin, keeping it supple and strong. Of course not everyone will swear by it like I do, but it has helped me. If my skin is very dry then I take 2 1000mg capsules, 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. Evening Primrose oil has many other helpfull uses, it is said to help PMT, and also regulate metabolic, physiological and reproductive functions. Give it a go, it may just work for you.

I have a female chocolate labrador who is 8 months old and when she was younger she seemed to get dandruff. I took her to the vets and he recommended I gave her these tablets or margarine to help improve her skin. Well what a difference her coat is so shiny you can almost see your face in it!! Her coat is also very silky as labs do generally have quite coarse hair. I would recommend this to anyone to help improve their dogs coat, I know if you're reading this you probably think I'm weird but it works for humans so why shouldn't it work for animals as well.

Come on girls give us blokes a break. It’s a common fact that us blokes can tell when its that time of the month because are nearest and dearest suddenly start acting very strange a bit like Jeckel and Hyde. Evening primrose oil liquid is the answer to stop this once a month transformation, all you have to do is take two 5ml spoonfuls twice a day, what could be simpler. Evening primrose oil liquid is obtained from cultivated seeds and provides a rich naturally occurring component known as gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is required by the body for the production of prostaglandin’s which help regulate the menstrual cycle, blood pressure and clotting. As usual this product is widely available from most chemists, health shops and supermarkets and also the price varies between these shops. Asda sell there own, it comes in a 200ml bottle and is lemon flavoured. However, it is also availble in tablet form. So girls for 10mls of this product it would make our life a lot happier around that time of the month

I have been buying vitamin tablets, including evening primrose for a few years now. First of all I would buy whichever brand had the best promises, usually seen on televion or in magazines. evening primrose isn't cheap, especially when I purchased it mostly from Boots the chemist. I visited a shop a long time ago, named The Pound Shop, because every product they sell is a pound. I noticed that they sold evening primrose for a pound a tub, enough for 1 month. How can they sell it for this price when the likes of Boots is triple at least . I have been using the cheap brand now for a long time and they results seem just as good. You don't get the fancy packaging, but you don't eat that do you? It's the no frills of vitamins. I certainly won't be fooled by advertisements again. The money kept in my purse dictates which brand I buy.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

I used to suffer terribly with cycle related left breast pain and although I put up with it for many years, eventually I had to go the the GP to see if I was seriously ill. I thought I had breast problems. I was prescribed Evening Primrose Oil and was surprised however that I had to take about 12 capsules per day. Surely this wasn't right? I queried, but the doctor insisted. This was the right dosage. I didn't see immediate alleviation, but by about the second month I realised that yes, it was working. I had NO PAIN AT ALL. I kept taking the high dose as prescribed and by about the fourth month, not only had my breast pain gone - completely - I had stopped suffering from PMT! Hubby couldn't understand why I wasn't Jeckyll and Hyde any more. In addition, my skin began to bloom and the texture was silky smooth and i just felt 'better'. Full of life, less lethargic, my hair shone. It was amazing. I only take a 'one a day' dose now but I would reccomend EPO to any woman as you get a whole range of benefits you might not be expecting.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

I started using Efamol Marine Evening Primrose Oil 10 years ago for M.E. which I suffer from, and it definitely helped with the joint pains but also I found that soon after using it, I no longer had awful breast pain at that time of the month each time, and that for me was a blessing. I used to have such tenderness that one time I used Deep Heat - would you believe! -but I was so desperate. Deep Heat is obviously no good for that by the way! But Efamol Marine Evening Primrose Oil is more suited to PMT pain than the ordinary Evening Primrose Oil. It is expensive, I think, at £9.99 for about a month's supply but for me it's worth it.

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

I originally started evening primrose oil to alleviate PMT and I found that it was completely useless. BUT after taking it for a few weeks I suddenly noticed that my ezcema had started to clear up and now I wouldn't be without it. It is a brilliant remedy for anyone with dry skin as it boosts your levels of fatty acids. I have suffered from ezcema since childhood and have never found an effective remedy against it. Steroid creams clear up the ezcema, but they don't stop it from appearing in the first place. I now take 1000mg a day (1500mg if my skin becomes a bit dry) and I now very rarely suffer from ezcema patches. It's worth giving it a go if you suffer from mild to moderate ezcema and it may even clear up your PMT!

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

Did you know that evening primrose oil contains the same fatty acid as that found in breast milk? Did you know that the fatty acid found in evening primrose oil promotes healthy skin and is particularly helpful for those of us with dry or aging skin? I have used evening primrose oil over a number of years and have to say it is one supplement that I have continued taking whilst many others have been tried and abandoned. I find it improves my skin texture giving it a youthful glow and I soon notice a deterioration when I forget to take it for a few days. The oil can be bought in a capsule form or in a bottle with a dropper. Initially I used the oil in a bottle but found this fiddly to use so changed to the capsules. The capsules can be bought in many shops but it does vary wildly in price so look around. The capsules I take contain 500mg of evening primrose oil and 5mg of vitamin E. The packet recommends taking one or two capsules per day and I have to say that I find one dose per day is sufficient. As with all supplements it is worth experimenting until you find a level that suits your body. Evening primrose oil is also promoted as being helpful for women with period problems and at the time of menopause. I think evening primrose oil is a definite 'must have' for ladies once they are over 40, especially for those with dry skin problems. Try it and see the benefits for yourself!
