Having borrowed my mother in law's steam cleaner too often I decided I'd better invest in my own. After doing some research into steam cleaners I decided I'd go with the most well known make of Karcher. Also because we have a pressure washer by them and it's been excellent in the past so I thought their steam cleaner would be as high quality. And I was right. This is an excellent cleaner. You fill it with just over a litre of water and it takes about 10 minutes to heat it to operating temperature. They included a set of anti-limescale sticks with it to extend the life of the machine. Although you then have to replace these yourself. The cleaner continues to heat the water at regular intervals but you don't get a noticable drop in steam unlike my MIL make. There's a little indicator light to show when the cleaner is heating. I liked this one for the number of accessories that come with it. There are two pole handles so you can have it long or short depending on the job you are going to do. There are two bristle heads - a longer one for floors and a smaller one for small areas like worktops. Both of these have an elasticated microfibre cleaning cloth that goes over them if needed. The cloth is washed at 60 and comes out nice and white again, although mine is greying slightly now, it hasn't affected the cleaning. For small joints and hard to reach bits there is a small round nozzle with bristles that can be used to scrub away dirt. This got my shower door and the seal around it really clean unlike when I manually clean it. The window squeegee is the hit for me. You spray the windows with steam from a certain distance and then squeegee it off. There are no streaks!! I have never had non-streaky windows before lol. As nar2 pointed out don't spray steam onto cold glass and be sure to read the instruction book and use the steam nozzle at the required distance from the glass. We don't want any shattered windows or tables! It's lightweight and has a sturdy floor so that it doesn't tip over, there is also a safety valve into the water container to prevent accidents. The extension lead is nice and long as well so you're not continuely changing plugs. I've used it on a variety of surfaces: worktops, glass, windows, tile floors and walls, bathroom and kitchen surfaces. The only thing I'm not sure about is wood floors - says you can use it but I'm not risking mine with it! I like the fact I can do a deep clean and know that everything is germ free. Something I am more concerned about now I have a little boy. The one thing I would change is the price. I paid £130 in tesco direct for it. That's quite a lot more than other makes of steam cleaner. But for the quality it is worth every penny more. Mind you if you can find it cheaper then I would definitely recommend it. Amazon are stocking it for £149 at the moment and that seems to be the common price in most outlets. I've only put 4 for reliability because I haven't had it long don't want to give it a big head with 5/5 for everything. More expensive but miles better than any other steam cleaner I've tried. Update 2014. The steam cleaner works as well as it did the day I bought it. A great investment.
