When it comes to buying things for the home, we have to be really careful because our flat is tiny and pretty much full of bookcases. Something that we didn't want taking up too much space was a vacuum cleaner. Having never really bought a hoover before other than an Argos Value Range one, I didn't know where to start when looking and neither did my boyfriend. What we ended up with was the Dirt Devil DDCYL1. I can't remember exactly how much we paid but right now this is just under £40 on Amazon.
The DDCYL1 is quite small in comparison to other hoovers I have owned in the past but maybe this is mainly due to the fact that it isn't an upright hoover. The bottom half of the hoover is silver in colour with wheels on either side. This makes the hoover easy to drag around the floor and also so it doesn't catch on anything/ scratch the floors in your house. At the top of this part is a large silver handle which means you can also carry it around easily. The hoover is far from heavy and I find it extremely easy to carry around from room to room unlike with upright hoovers.
Next to the handle is the on/ off button on one side while the cable retraction button is on the other side. The buttons are quite large in size and are black which is a nice contrast to the silver. I find both of these buttons easy to use as they're so big and easy to see. The cable retraction is standard in comparison to other hoovers and you do need to keep the button pressed down in order to get the cable to go all the way back inside with the plug snug to the hole it comes from.
The other half of the hoover is red and made from a see through plastic. This is where the hoover comes apart so you can empty out anything that has been hovered up. One thing that needs to be mentioned is that this hoover is bagless which for me, is a great thing. I hate having to spend money on replacement bags so this feature makes things a lot easier for me. The overall appearance of the hoover is quite nice. It doesn't look overly flashy but it isn't the most basic either.
At 1600W this hoover is pretty powerful but somehow, it isn't as loud as I had expected it to be. Either myself or my boyfriend can be sat watching TV in the living room and the other to be vacuuming elsewhere and the sound from the hoover can barely be heard. As this is a powerful machine, I was expecting great things in regards to cleaning power. Luckily, I was not disappointed. This model comes with a long, silver pipe (not sure what it is actually called) which is where attachments are added. Without any attachments, you would have to get down on the floor in order to clean carpets but keeping the hoover this way means you can get into tricky corners. You also get two long black tube attachments and a carpet attachment so you can hoover at a variety of heights and on a variety of surfaces.
While this hoover does work extremely well in regards to cleaning, it isn't the sturdiest of products. The original hoover tube comes out very easily and I have to put it back in numerous times during one use. This part was glued in but the seal on the glue broke after about a week which is why it now comes out every single time. If it hadn't have been for that, this product would have been getting the full five stars from me but unfortunately, I have to drop it's rating down to four stars.
