E4 is an accessory channel to the standard Channel 4. I would describe it as a kind of young adult version of its predecessor mostly composed of comedy and drama shows, usually from the Unite States. It runs practically all day with the shows on later into the night/early morning often being repeats from very early on in the series. Show lengths vary from 30 minutes to an hour with a total running time not including advert breaks 27 and 49 minutes.
As I mentioned E4 tends to only really show comedies and dramas. Occasionally it will also feature a movie typically on a weekend at 9pm which usually tend to continue this theme, with movies featured recently including Mr and Mrs Smith and Grease. Many of the shows featured are light entertainment and also tend to have canned laughter (a pet hate of mine) such as the Big Bang Theory. They tend to be very up-to-date with showing series soon after they're released in the US and maintaining the sequence of the series (which again can be very frustrating if you have watched much of the series already). I do enjoy their selection of shows on offer with my day to day favourites being How I Met Your Mother and the Big Bang Theory which run at around 5-6pm which is perfect for me as its just when I arrive home.
Their daytime viewing is a little less entertaining and it does tend to be comprised of older shows/series. One show they never fail to be showing at around 1pm is Desperate Housewives which they have shown for almost the entirety of the series, which as it finished at 8 series' is pretty repetitive. While there aren't really shows I absolutely hate featured on the channel one of my major issues with it is how limited the target audience is and like I said how repetitive they are in their choice of viewing.
While often something we very easily overlook I do think adverts are a major issue in whether I regularly frequent a channel. For example, I find it much easier to watch BBC 1 for more than a single show as its adverts are short and feature only that specific channel. One thing that frustrates me is when adverts seem to go on forever and they don't necessarily relate to the channel at all (for example, I have noted that cartoon/children channels sometimes have adverts on banking/loans which I find inappropriate). E4 does not do this which means I don't really mind sitting through the adverts and they tend to pass pretty quickly.
As I mentioned previously the target audience of E4 is very restricted. The shows are clearly aimed at a younger audience yet probably a little too blue/risque for children. They tend to be shows that brink on risky as they don't feature swearing or violence but do tend to have adult themes such as sex and relationships. If you don't enjoy comedies and are looking for something a little more serious then E4 is definitely not a channel for you and I would probably recommend More 4 which has more stimulating shows such as Time Team and property shows (although one's opinion of stimulating is obviously subjective - you might not enjoy these at all!) if you wish to stick with the Channel 4 name.
I would recommend E4 if you are interested in very light-hearted not exactly gripping shows. While the drama shows they feature can be somewhat interesting, I wouldn't say they are my favourite and I would prefer other channels like Sky Atlantic (or simply online surfing for specific shows) for this. I think it is enjoyable but not captivating and so is good to watch your favourite shows, as opposed to leaving the channel or to catch whatevers on.
I regularly watch shows on E4 as I do quite enjoy some of the shows they have on offer. In fact compared with some other channels I must admit I like more shows overall than I do with others. However, I am sitting comfortably in their target audience which means that I'm perhaps supposed to like the shows they have on offer and so it might not be quite as enjoyable for others.
E4 is definitely all about the comedy shows, and you know what your going to get. They show a lot of programs aimed at the teen audience including the massively popular Inbetweeners. It provides a good range of entertainment though for wide ranges including the ever popular Friends and Simpsons. It is also home to the hugely popular Made in Chelsea reality show and also shows reruns of the popular soap Hollyoaks. This is a common theme of E4 - It does sometimes show repeats of hit channel 4 programs which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on whether you have already seen the program the previous day. It does lack some variety though and some would argue it wont be for everyone, as it vary rarely offers an alternative to comedy. If you are someone who enjoys the more intelectual shows and things like documentaries then this channel definately wouldnt be for you. From a personal point of view I really enjoy watching E4, at the age of 18 the humour really appeals to me and it is one of my most viewed channels, but I do appreciate that it will not be for everyone and some will prefer a bit of variation in the programs shown.
E4 has to be the best TV channel of all time - well it is for me anyway! When I get in from work I switch the TV onto E4 straight away and it doesn't usually go off until either my husband comes in, who usually prefers watching something else, or until I go to bed.
E4 is a channel that is aimed towards young adults and the majority of its shows are American sitcoms and series. Some of the regular shows that I watch on here are Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs, My Name is Earl, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, 90210 and One Tree Hill. They also show some of the English comedy or young adult shows including The Inbetweeners, Skins and Misfits.
E4 is also great for showing repeats so if you miss anything there's bound to be another showing of it later in the week on E4. Programmes like Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty which are premiered on Channel 4 can be found on E4 some time later during the same week. Friends is constantly being repeated on this channel with 2 episodes on every night and as soon as series 1-10 have been shown, they'll start all the way from the beginning again. For some this may be very annoying but any Friends fans will never be left without an episode to watch.
There is also an E4 + 1 channel which works really well for me as sometimes I get in late from work and have missed a programme I watch on E4 so I'll just go one channel up and I can watch everything again an hour later.
Although constant repeats may be very irritating for some people, E4 is by far my favourite channel as it has all of my favourite programmes and I would be lost without it!
I dont watch an awful lot of TV but I must admit to loving E4. The range of shows are all, in my opinion brilliant. I can understand why alot of people would not be tempted to watch this channel at all as its aimed mainly at a small and very specific audience in general, namely young adults, (although there are always exceptions to this) with possibly a slight Americanised culture, as the large majority of shows at peak times are American sitcoms such as, Friends-of which numerous episodes are shown daily, My name is Earl, Scrubs, How I met your mother and other programs like this are shown intermitently throughout the year, normally for a series at a time. That said E4 does have a small number of shows that are based in England that are easy to relate to and reflect certain cultures within our own country, such as Skins and Shameless, which are among some of the most popular shows for the young adult generation.
E4 tends to be quite predictable in terms of its scheduleing, with the day starting with teen drama type programs such as One Tree Hill, The OC and Gilmour girls, up until early afternoon where you can get anything from The Simple life to Coach Trip and the like. Then in the evening you get Friends at the same time every night followed by whatever series they are showing at the time ie. Scrubs and a few other programs followed by the same two episodes of Friends shown earlier in the night, then moving onto the 'main' show of the night at 9 o clock, for example the brand new series of Scrubs or My name is Earl.
In addition to E4 there is E4+1 which shows the exact same programes and schedule but exactly 1 hour later which is handy if you miss your much loved programes or have to work late- as so often happens with me. I think I would put E4 in my list of favorite TV channels because the shows on offer are all shows which appeal to me, however because all the shows are very similar if you dont like thier kind of entertainment you probably wont like a lot of the shows.
When I purchased a freeview box a couple of years ago, I had the aim of watching one channel in mind, and that was e4.
E4 is another channel behind the makers or channel 4 designed at the younger demographic, teenagers and young adults. The channel aims to be a little different, a bit arty, wacky and funky.
The channel shows classic American comedies such as Friends, Scrubs, Gilmore girls, and the Hills, all of which I really enjoy. It shows the Friends episodes just at the right times, when I am getting in from dinner and when I am spaced out in the evening looking for something light hearted to watch.
E4 also acts in a partnership with channel four in the programmes it shows. For example when channel four is running with a series such as big brother, E4 houses the off shoots, which can be designed a little less for mainstream TV, such as big brother's big mouth and big brother's little brother.
Incase you miss a show that you want to see on E4, there is a little bit of extra time as E4 has a plus one channel, E4 plus one, which repeats what E4 was showing an hour ago. This is great as I am always turning the TV on and realising I have just missed what was on before. Another great way to catch TV programmes that you miss on E4 is the internet. Channel four website has a section called OD which is on demand, where you can catch up on your favorite programmes.
For something, light humerous and easy to watch I would recommend E4. It is never going to have hard hitting documentaries or politics or news, but I like it for what it does show.
E4 is a free digital channel stemming from Channel 4. It also has a free One-hour catch-up channel which shows the same shows later on (E4+1)
E4 generally shows programmes exclusively for absolute morons, such as Big Brother, Hollyoaks, The Hills and The O.C. with vast amounts of adverts in between. The channel seems to be aimed at people 13-25, with its gaudy, trendy look and irritating, sexy presenters with zero personality or charm with whom I feel I am supposed to identify, but instead, along with the show's warm, fuzzy and loathsome ethos leave me feeling depressed and alienated, as does the exclusive content such as Skins and Smallville.
E4 Music Zone also sickens me to no end, playing the latest dirge by whatever vulgarly attractive pop skank has been played on the most adverts, and therefore possesses the most artistic merit, with moronic interviews and stupid questions asked by E4's very own soporific dullard nobodies.
Although it does occasionally show some decent programmes, such as old re-runs of The Simpsons, Scrubs, My Name is Earl, Reaper and 5 minute animated shorts by upcoming young animators, the endless repeats of Hollyoaks and Big Brother are bloody annoying and cheapen any viewing experience, as does the chirpy, forced optimism that the channel comes with, but at the end of the day, at least it's free.
Its all just mainstream drivel, and it works so well because people will watch whatever they're told to watch, and in these days of moribund culture and decadence, you can expect everyone just to laugh and bleat their lives away on videos of people asleep, celebrities talking about videos of people asleep, stupid soap melodrama and tired old episodes of dead sitcoms. Just eat it all up and laugh yourself stupid...really stupid.
E4 is channel 4's sister station, and a channel that I do watch a lot, in fact practically every day.
Types of programme
E4 does show a lot of re-runs, most noticeably Friends: on about 4 times a day! As a Friends fan, this does mean I nearly always have something to watch in the evening and you can never get tired of Friends in my opinion! Other than that, there are re-runs of 'My Name is Earl' among other shows. There are also shows that tie in with channel 4 shows, such as with Big Brother, there is 'Big Brother's Little Brother' and 'Big Brother's Big Mouth'. Also, E4 shows Hollyoaks a day early, which I regularly watch so that's good for me! Other than that, E4 generally shows American sit coms, which do vary in quality. For example, Reaper is fairly poor, but I watched one, Samantha Who?, which was very enjoyable!
Other things to note
The channel is directed towards teenagers to aged 30 and both men and women. The level of adverts is the same as most other sky channels, so a fair amount, but not too excessive.
There can only be one cool channel for teenagers and for young adults and that my friend is E4 they are just the best for programmes such as Friends and Roswell, they have these shows which only young people would mainly watch and they have nothing that would interest someone. E4's programmes are special because they are just simple theyt don't try to hard and they always have great new dramas such as 9120.
Everyday 5pm Friends comes on which is a top comedy hit and which I love because they are really funny and these programmes interest children nowadays more channels such as BBC need to attract a younger audience and Channel 4 is the only one to step up to the mark.
The quality of the channel is always good but sometimes the channel goes off because of technical faults but that happens once in a while but other than that this channel is the best and the most hip.
A sad fact about me is when I get in from work or want to unwind I like watching crappy tv.
E4 is perhaps the best channel for people like me, people who like to watch something non-serious, often American, comedy, light-hearted, or teen dramas and series where it doesn't matter what episode it is, you'll end up laughing and not have to concentrate too hard.
E4 is a channel by channel 4 and is as I like to refer to it, channel 4's teenage sister!
The channel is on freeview, sky, virgin and some of the shows are below:
One Tree Hill
And so many more! (But you get the idea)
The reason I like E4 so much is partly to do with the e4 peek sneak they operate on some shows, for example, Desperate Housewives is a channel 4 show, BUT you can watch next week's episode on e4 straight after this week's episode on channel 4. This is a fantastic feature, IF you have E4, it can be bloody annoying though when your mates have all seen something you haven't.
The channel can be annoying with any channel other than the BBC, you get adverts and perhaps they are just more annoying to me as they are particularly aimed at my demographic (females 18-25) but they are just annoying and stupid. I often find myself getting annoyed and usually fast forwarding through them if I have the option to.
The channel is famously purple and white, and the website is just as flamboyant, on the website you can look in to each program in depth and find out story lines, character backgrounds and much more with e4 catch up. The website also holds a full listing of what is on the channel for up to 7 days in advance.
E4 can be very repetitive which can be annoying, sometimes the episodes of all our favourite programs like Friends can be on two days running, I don't think this happens all the time, mainly at the weekends when it is different scheduling from the week.
If there is nothing on television this is where I turn, it is rubbish at its best - this is the type of channel my dad constantly says has ruined the generation I am part of. As long as you can appreciate most the programs on this channel are just that programs you'll be fine. I can take or leave e4 but will often choose to watch it because of boredom I would must admit I do have many of the above shows on sky plus series link, but that's because there really isn't anything on television these days.
E4 is overall a break from the serious, stresses of everyday life. A fictional world that can be addictive. I can say I worry about younger people being obsessed with these types of shows and thinking that it is real, it is not.
Finally, what does the 'e' stand for? I have always assumed entertainment, but i could be wrong?! Anyone know?
E4 is such a popular channel for the simple fact it seems to air the best comedies and dramas. I think the comedies are what the vast majority of viewers are drawn in by.
Programmes such as The Inbetweeners, Big Bang Theory and My Name Is Earl all attract a large following and for a very good reason, they are hilarious.
My favourite programme on E4 has to be Smallville, I've followed a good number of seasons on E4 and it's absolutely brilliant. Once you start watching it, I promise, you'll be hooked! The storyline in my opinion is well laid out and intriguing and unlike some series' you do keep wanting to come back and watch the next.
E4 also features programmes such as One Tree Hill and 90210 which again are extremely popular to the young person audience. Big Brother is also aired but we'll do out best not to talk about that waste of television space!
E4 is a channel that shows on digital and free view television. It is for the young adult age group, from about 14 to 28. It is available in the UK and Northern Ireland, as it shows programmes in English but you can also watch it online using 4OD to catch up with your favourite programmes or you can use one of the programmes available to watch TV on your computer or laptop. It is channel 136 on sky, and then its 137 for e4 plus one. On freeview, it's channel 28 for E4 and channel 29 for e4 plus one, but this has changed as they both used to be one channel up. It is brought to you by channel 4, and linked to the channels such as 4music and more4.
It mainly shows repeats, but does have the premieres of some of new, very popular shows before you can see it on channel 4, and then they will be repeated later on during the week when they have been shown on channel 4. Examples of these shows are Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty when they are showing.
They mainly show American shows, and tend to repeat them every day in the order of the episodes until they finish and then they simply replace the finished show with a new one.
A point about the channel which is very useful is that it has a plus one channel which is one channel further up on both free view and sky. It is really useful because you can catch things that you wouldn't normally be able to see, or can plan your viewing schedule around other things that you are doing.
However, one bad point is how much big brother is on when its showing. They cancel all the good shows and replace them with repeats of big brothers, little brother, big mouth, etc.
Most of the shows are comedy, but there is however the odd bit of reality, science fiction or drama.
Some of my favourite shows are:
Friends: This great show must have been seen by everybody, two episodes are on twice a day and it goes through the ten seasons, before repeating again as it is such a popular programme, and it never seems to end. They are half an hour long each, and it is a sitcom/comedy about the lives and loves of Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Joey, Phoebe and Ross.
90210: This is one of the only very popular and new shows that is only showing on E4. It is a remake of the old show Beverly Hills 90210 from the nineties, and stars lots of unknown actors and actresses, although they are all very good and have a lot of chemistry. It is about the lives of the rich crowd in Beverly Hills, and has many different story lines.
Ugly Betty: There are both repeats of season 1 and 2 as well as the premieres of season 3. This is an original, American show about Betty Suarez who wants to be a journalist, and starts by entering fashion, a world that she doesn't fit into at all. The plot of this show is similar to the plot of the film, the devil wears prada only it is a much more extended storyline with different things going on.
A selection of the other shows available are;
Beauty and the Geek
One Tree Hill
My Name is Earl
Dirty Sexy Money
Also on ciao,
E4 is a digital channel that is available in the United Kingdom and Ireland. I feel that the channel is aimed at a younger audience from teens upwards. There are many good shows available on E4 and the channel shows a lot of comedy programs too. Some of the shows available on E4 at the min include:
An old time favourite, I will be very surprised to hear of anybody that hasn't heard of friends. It's about 3 guys and 3 girls who are of course really good friends. It's a top comedy that gives plenty of laughs. E4 repeats friends, beginning from the very first series to the end series and then starts all over again. If by any chance you haven't heard of this, then you don't know what you are missing. No matter how many times I watch friends I just can't get enough.
This show is fairly recent to E4. The show is about a group of school kids and the ups and downs of their lives. They all seem to be rich and beautiful with plenty of problems and dilemmas. This programme as you may know is a remake of the old 90210 series. Unfortunately I didn't watch this show in the past so I can't really compare new with old but the newer version defiantly gets a thumb's up from me.
Ah my favourite soap, infact this is the only soap I watch. Hollyoaks episodes are available to watch on channel 4 every night however if you have E4 you can also catch the next episode straight after and keep a day in advance. Hollyoaks is definatly aimed at a younger audience and is nothing like eastenders or corra. The cast again are all very beautiful but the stories and shocks are very good and without a doubt worth watching.
I really like this show being about an unattractive girl who is very smart and lands a job with some very beautiful people for mode magazine. There's just something about Betty that we can all relate to and like. I have watched this show a few times and although I did enjoy it, I never seem to go back and watch a full series.
I used to be a huge fan of this reality show but over the last few years I have really went off it to the point where I don't actually watch it at all anymore. E4 used to be the central of big brother although all the live shows used to be shown on channel four. E4 used to air things such as big brothers little brother and big mouth. Big brother live also used to be shown practically all the time as well as through the night just incase you wanted to watch people sleep.
There are many other shows on E4 that I haven't watched or given a chance. Some of these are:
One tree hill
E4 is a fun comedy channel that is worth a watch. If by any chance you miss an E4 show you will be happy to know that you can catch it an hour later on E4+1. I would definitely recommend this channel.
E4 is a freeview/satellite channel brought to you by channel 4. Its channel 136 on Sky and 29 on Freeview boxes.
The channel shows a variety of programmes, and broadcasts 24/7 unlike some freeview channels which are spin offs of larger channels (i.e. BBC3 which closes at 7am until 7pm!).
Balls of Steel
Big Brother Celebrity Hijack
Big Brother on the Streets
Brothers and Sisters
Dirty Sexy Money
E4's Interactive Comedy Festival
My Name is Earl
One Tree Hill
Rick and Steve
The Big Bang Theory
Some of the shows are in series; Desperate Housewives, Smallville, Ugly Betty, Big Brother, Brother and Sisters, The Inbetweeners, The Big Bang Theory, Skins. Whereas others are on year round, Hollyoaks, Scrubs, Friends etc :)
The channel is primarily comedy based, with the odd drama show (Skins and Smallville mainly!), but your always sure to find a good show on there to watch!!!
The only thing I hate about the show is that when it is Big Brother season E4 tends to be taken over by the show, although the last two years they have cut the live coverage from 24/7 to just a few hours a night, though some VERY sad people are complaining about this saying its not enough live coverage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS PLENTY!!! Lol!
All in all, its definitely one of my favourite channels, I love the first look Hollyoaks as it means I can watch tomorrows show if I'm not going to be able to watch it!!! :)
E4 is a tv channel that was launched in 2001 so is it any wander that they have run out of original programs to show and resorted to re running some of the more popular series to be on channel 4.
The channel is supposedly aimed at a age group of 15 to 35 year olds but would depend on your tv tastes as to weather you like the channel.
It is available on freeview on channel 28, virgin media on channel 143, sky on channel 136 and tiscali on channel 14.
E4 has a variety of shows of which includes friends which most of us love to watch but unfortunately there is only so many times you can view the same episode before it begins to bore you and they do seem to repeat these quite a lot, hollyoaks which is a soap opera aimed at young teenagers and early 20s but i have never been a big fan of this show, my name is Earl which i loved to watch to begin with as i had never seen this show before but like i said with friends it is repeated to death and does become irritating after watching it so many times,
there is usually a film on in the evening starting around 9pm they are usually quite old films from the early 90s but always good films that are enjoyable to watch.
This time of year wholst big brother is running they do have featurs of this like big brothers little brother but this is not something that realy interests me and wouldnt interest you unless you are a big brother fan aswell as a lot of live coverage from the big brother house.
To be honest channel 4 which is the company who own E4 is not a channel i watch very often as i dont find many programs on there that interest me but was kind of hoping that with E4 being marketed at the age group i fall into that i would enjoy this more, some shows are goood but you can get very bored of the repeats they have on there very easily and the channel looses its appeal after a while.
E4 is one of the most popular Sky channels and I have to say that this is due to a few shows, with the main show being Friends. This is exactly the type of audience that E4 is aimed towards. People who enjoy good comedy and are willing to watch entertainement of old and new.
The channel was launched in 2001 and was originally a channel that cost extra, however over the years it has now become very accessible and available on any type of freeview or freesat box. This means that the channel has also become more public as it is much easier to watch now.
The shows that I enjoy the most on here are of course Friends, Desperate Housewives, Big Band Theory, Smallville and My name is Early just to name a few. It pretty much has all the top American comedies, plus a lot of other adult teen shows.
However their are some down sides, with the prime reason being Big Brother. I really dont see what the point is in watching other people just sit in a house and do nothing all day long. Fair enough it was a great concept at first and an early bird into the reality tv show industry, however Big Brother has been well and truly milked and I for one cant wait till it is off E4 forever as it is taking up far too much screen time.
The second downside is the number of repeats. I think they recycle Friends every few months, with two episodes being shown every day and repeated a couple of times every day. So maybe they could buy some new comedies to add to the schedule, so it is that bit less repetitive.
However I feel Friends is a very big part of E4 now, and therefore the repeats for this show can be validated. Friends is a part of my life and therefore E4 will continue to also be so.
