      Well done Teletext!

I booked a holiday to Makhadi Bay in Egypt which my husband and I have just returned from. The holiday was absolutely excellent and we feel that we received first class service from Teletext, the airline and the shuttle service to and from the hotel. It all went smoothly from start to finish. The hotel was all that you expect from a four star - we had 10 days in a wonderful environment and cannot fault it. Best of all we feel that we got a real bargain through teletext which meant that we could be generous with the people who looked after us in Egypt. Thank you Teletext!

      • "Price goes up and up"

Rubbish, rip off, poor customer service, all foreign sales staff who continue to up prices.

Rang teletext due to supposedly cheap holiday to sharm el sheikh, yes it started off cheap but then the hidden costs come in! Suitcase and baggage prices, then to be asked if I'd like to upgrade for an extra 60 to which my answe was yes if you can do it for 50. Total cost of holiday and flight was confirmed, it was explained that I would need to pay a deposit to which I did and if I rang the following week to pay 1000 my flights would be confirmed. So I rang only to be bit again with hidden charges and extra costs (trading standards) should be involved. A complete sham-do not book through teletext! Poor customer service, try to charge per person for debit card payments??? Yeh credit card but not debit and certainly not per person.... Hidden costs through out has spoilt whole experience of booking and holiday is not ending up as cheap as originally suggested or thought!!!!! Disgrace... Wouldn't book through them again.

OK for a cheap getaway I suppose...

      Teletext Holdays?

I remember the days when Teletext Holidays was on the TV, I loved it! All the latest deals were on the screen, page after page of special offers and you could see what you like. Even then you had to call the staff, which didn't bother me as we didn't have the Internet like we do now.

I must admit I don't like the website one little bit. I find it is long winded and it doesn't even allow you to price up and book online, which is a crime in this day and age!!!

I personally prefer a website that does all the maths for me, I don't want to phone up a local rate number to discuss things further..which is what this website suggests.

Another thing I dislike is that the search engine is designed in a way that makes you select a town or country you want to visit. Sometimes I like a little inspiration and would like to be able to select "anywhere" and see what the search engine brings me.

The website allows you to search for a destination, your choice of departing airport, the star class you want to travel and the board you wish to select. i.e. "Travel from Manchester to Egypt for 14 nights, all inclusive." You can also select how many days flexible you are.. they have this set at 14 which I think is quite good, some other websites offer 3 days and I find that awkward to use. I would like to see some more options i.e. "Free child places" "good for adults" "good for families" etc etc.

The Prices - I find the prices are still quite cheap but not as cheap as they once where. Perhaps this is due to inflation, more airport taxes etc.. who knows??? I have found many websites that are cheaper than Teletext now, some of which are www.icelolly.com, www.sunsave.com & www.sunmaster.com

      The selection of hotels..

From my experience, I can think that hotels that are displayed on Teletext or any budget cancellation holiday website are normally poor. They do not excel the Travel Agents and in my opinion sometimes it's worth paying a little more and travelling with a company who have done all the research and will give you reputable hotels.

Overall, I would use teletext if I was looking for a cheap getaway but for a special holiday I would avoid.

        PATHETIC!!!

I called up teletext holidays for a holiday to Sharm El Sheikh because our family have already booked it to go there and spoke to a guy who took all of our details and my partners credit card details. he then said he needed to speak to the card holder but my partner wasn't in at the time. my partner called them up the next day to confirm we could use the card and they said that the guy was not in and that he would be in today at 3pm. we called up today and the guy we spoke to answered, and as soon as my partner said our details and that he was ringing to confirm the holiday the guy said that he isnt who he thinks he is and that the guy wont be in till tomorrow (what an idiot). so i called up and spoke to a woman who checked if the holiday was still available but it had gone...i was then put through to a manager who didnt give a care in the world that the guy had done this!now we have no holiday and 1 week off work!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Well worth a try.

I've spent the last couple of months scouring the internet for a cheap deal. My boyfriend and I desperately needed a holiday but unfortunatly due to his daft car and my shopping habbit we didn't have too much moolah to spend on this lovely week away. Que Teletextholidays!

If you aren't too specific in the details you put in you get some right bargains come up! We immediatly knew we were going all inclusive purely to have a drink in the hotel bar for free before going out. For example at this moment I can get £220 all inclusive in Turkey! Absolute bargain... however there is a but...

Quite a major but as if you ask me... look for the reviews (usually on trip advisor) on those cheap hotels ad you see exactly why it is so cheap. Definetly something to check thoroughly before handing over your earned pennies.

You can look at Teletext holidays by you guessed it, using the teletext! The much simpler way is to go online so you get a description and photograph of the hotel. Then check the reviews while your online!

To book is slightly harder than if you were on something like Thomson or Thomas Cook. You have to look at who Teletext are advertising the holiday for, often a smaller company. You then have to ring the number they give you and quote the code on the holiday you're interested in. Some give links to book on the internet which I much prefer.

The search option down the left hand side is really easy to use and updates quickly. It also saves your search criteria for when you next visit.

Overall this website definitely offers the cheapest holidays but you do really need to do your research as with most of them there is a reason why the prices are so cheap!

            Disadvantages

            Great company, great personal staff

Teletext Holidays seam to be to be quite a cheep company from what I've seen, but they did prove me slightly wrong.

We looked in co-op and Holiday hyper market, which gave us big prices for wired unreliable company.

Then a family member said, look on teletext, so she went ahead and booked it for us, it cost us £1,400 for 6 all-inclusive, which was great, with all transfers included as well; it was in Barcelona, Spain.

The flight was at around 5pm, and returning the following week on Saturday (7 days).

You can not book the Holiday online, you have to choose it and phone them up, but they seam very nice, and say if you want anything to just call them back directly.

The only problem is when they sent the e-mail attachment for us to print as booking confirmation, they put one name wrong (as is sounded similar), but they then re-sent another with the correct name.

They were quite good tho and are now looking for great deals next year.

            -

Although I am off to Las Vegas in December, I feel as though I am missing out on that Summer holiday that I always love to go on, so we decided to have a scout around for a late deal for this summer.

I have never tried to find a holiday online, I have always used a travel agents basically for the ease, you get a couple of brochures, choose where you want to go, go into the travel agents and jobs a good, it all booked and you have piece of mind that you are in capable hands.

On this occasion we have been scouting around the internet, which has proved to be quite tedious and to be honest has wound me up a little bit. Thats why you get cheaper deals online because it takes so long to find them and is a little bit of a hassle.

Trawling thorugh various websites, I have found a lot of them deceiving, you see a good price which looks like the total cost of the holiday and then you realise that that is just the flight alone, which ends up leaving you disappointed. Also the amount of add on's is terrible you can find a really cheap holiday and then the transfer costs are extortionate, its unbelievable.

However, Teeltext Holidays has seemed to have out an end to all this tediousness, and has made everything a lot more easier than it has been trawling though these ridiculous amounts of deceiving sites.

The teletext holiday website is great. Its easy to navigate around. As you go on the site, it shows various pictures, which are probably the most important criteria that people are looking for: Late Deals, All Inclusive, Beach Holidays, Hot Deals and Summer Getaways, so if you are looking for something within these categories its directly in front of your eyes and easy to go straight to. The are other tabs at the top of the page if you are looking for something more specific: Flight Only, Holidays, Villas, Uk Break and Hotels. On the left hand side of the page you have the search option, which is really easy to use. You just enter the departure date of what you are looking at and choose whether you want that as the exact date or whether you are flexible, choose your departure airport, which can be chosen by region is your are not particularly bothered which airport you fly from but would like to travel froma specific region, choose you destination and the resort you would like to stay in, the number of people in the party, the board basis that you prefer and the star rating of the accommodation, click on search and within a couple of seconds your results will appear with various suggestions for your holiday.

Your results are displayed in lists of 20 and you can select at the top whether you want teletext recommended, price or departure date to be the main criteria on the order in which the results are displayed.

In the listing it shows a small picture of the accommodation and the main point of sale is the price that it is going at and the palce and resort location. It gives details of the departure airport, a brief description of the resort and a button to click on for more information.

When you click on more information, it gives you a more in depth summary of the itinerary, details of what you get for your money, more pictures of the accommodation and the area in which you are staying and details of the provider for you to contact if you are looking to book the holiday.

I have found this site extremely useful and quick to find some good deals. There are no hidden features on the site, its relatively to the point. A great site that is easy to use and gives you piece of mind.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

Better value for money than lastminute.com and other competitors.

I recently graduated from university, have only just started my first full time job, and am trying to scrape together enough cash to put down a deposit on a flat. As you might imagine, I’m a little strapped for cash. I’ve had to give up a few luxuries: the expensive binge-drinking sessions I would indulge myself with as a student are gone, as has my habit of splurging on books, computer games and DVDs (to an extent). However, one thing I won’t give up is my love of leaving rainy England behind and jetting off on holiday, and thanks to Teletext Holidays, I haven’t had to.

Teletext Holidays is an online travel comparison site that checks and vets all of its suppliers and, like lastminute.com, specialises in bargain late deals, with holiday prices sometimes falling as low as £50. As the name suggests, the site originally was a Teletext function, and although the website (www.teletextholidays.co.uk) is more comprehensive, you can still access many deals from your television (Teletext page 200).

My last two trips abroad were both booked through Teletext Holidays, and were terrific bargains. The first was a girls’ holiday to Ibiza in the summer of 2006, which we managed to book for mere £99 per person. The deal included return flights with Iberia, and self-catered accommodation in 3* apartments within close vicinity to the beach and San Antonio town. For my second Teletext Holidays trip, my boyfriend and I visited Marsa Alam, on Egypt’s southern Red Sea coast. The holiday cost £220 each for return flights with Thompson and one week at a 3* all-inclusive beach resort.

              *Searching*

Holidays are very easy to find thanks to the simple and user-friendly website. Five tabs line the top of the front page, direct you to either ‘Holidays’, ‘Flights’, ‘Hotels’, ‘UK’ or ‘Villas’. From there, you can enter your criteria based on factors such as destination, dates, number travelling, board type, rating/class, and so on. Flexible travellers can also provide details of how variable their dates can be, which is a nice touch for those trying to find the cheapest deal.

Search results appear in blocks of 20, and can be arranged by price, departure date, or Teletext Holidays’ recommendation. The search listings briefly highlight the main features of the holidays, and selecting the ‘view details’ hyperlink provides more information. The details of the holiday are clearly displayed, and in most cases photographs of the resort are provided. A brief ‘blurb’ is also provided to describe the hotel facilities and local amenities in more detail, although the amount of information you are given varies between holidays. In some cases the hotel isn’t even allocated until arrival, but these do tend to be the cheaper deals.

For popular destinations, you are also provided with a full destination guide, detailing the city or region’s key attractions. A current 5-day weather forecast is also given, which is great for whetting your appetite for a hot holiday.

If you don’t have a destination in mind, Teletext Holidays’ search engine is very good for providing suggestions. Selecting ‘Bestsellers’ will give all the popular deals that have been tried and tested by countless others, while clicking ‘Inspire Me’ will find unusual destinations that you might not have considered. It is also possible to search for ‘Exotic Places’ or, if it’s a tan you’re after, ‘Guaranteed Sunshine’. Alternatively, the website’s front page advertises the cheapest late deals and current popular destinations.

Generally the search facility is very good, but occasionally I found that advertised offers couldn’t be found by searching. There is also a slight delay before Teletext Holidays removes a deal from the website after it has been booked, which can lead to disappointment (as I once learned the hard way).

              *Holiday Types*

The main holiday search facility will find the standard beach resort holidays, but the site also caters for those looking for something a bit different. The same searching principles apply here, but there are additional features to aid you with your search. Different holiday types can be accessed by selecting the relevant hyperlink (at the top of the page, just below the ‘Holidays’ tab). The options are ‘Ski’, ‘Worldwide’, ‘City Breaks’, ‘Special Interest’ and ‘Cruise’.

Ski: There are a range of Skiing holidays available with destinations ranging from France to Canada, and video guides are available to ‘inspire’ you. While far less extensive than the general holiday search facility, there are still some good deals to be found. The cheapest I could find was for 7 nights in Soldeu, Andorra, at £185 per person, based on two sharing a 2* self-catered apartment, including flights (6 January 2008).

Worldwide: If you have a slightly higher budget, there are some excellent long haul deals to be found. The website recommends their favourite honeymoon holidays, Eastern destinations, and last minute long haul offers, but I found that searching gave the best results. For only £304 per person I found an offer for 7 nights in the Dominican Republic, or 14 nights for an additional £90, including flights (10 October 2007), which certainly tempted me.

City Breaks: Here you can search for shopping breaks, cultural cities, budget European destinations, or cities by the sea. There are some good bargains be found, with ‘Spanish cities from £50 per person’ being the cheapest deal offered. However, the link failed to work when I tried it, which was frustrating. My favourite break that I found was for 2 nights in Barcelona for £104, including flights (15 October 2007).

Special Interest: There are a wide range of unusual holidays to choose from in this section, ranging from spa breaks and fishing trips to adventure and watersports holidays. This is a very informative part of the site that gives excellent tips and ideas for breaks away. However, you cannot book these types of holidays through the site and instead are directed to external sites.

Cruise: I was shocked by how cheap some of the cruise offers are, until I spotted the words ‘flights not included’. There are 7-night cruises in the Caribbean available for little more than £100 per person, but you have to make your own way to and from the port. Of the deals that included transfer flights, I liked the deal for 7 nights in the Canaries aboard the Thomson Destiny, for £349 per person (5 October, 2007).

              *Booking*

In most cases it is not possible to book online, and instead you must call the holiday provider directly. The phone number for you to call, and the reference you need to quote, are both clearly displayed. The booking process is simple and fairly quick, it is possible to pay over the phone by debit or credit card, and once the booking is complete, full details are emailed or posted to you.

However, I must offer a few words of warning. At this stage, the holiday operator will add airport taxes and transfer fees to the holiday, which are not included in Teletext Holidays’ price. For both my holidays, this additional charge was approximately £30 to £40 per person. While I still believe that both my holidays were a bargain, it is easy to accept these last minute charges in the heat of the moment when booking, without considering whether you are still getting a good deal.

              *Conclusion*

Teletext Holidays is an excellent site for those seeking a bargain or last minute holiday. In my experience, I’ve found that the deals are generally cheaper than those offered on lastminute.com, or on other bargain holiday websites. Just make sure you account for the additional charges before booking – it’s a pain, but in the majority of cases the holiday will still be a bargain.

Until my student debts are cleared and I can afford to shop for my holiday in style, I’ll certainly continue to book my holidays with Teletext Holidays. And I strongly recommend that all you bargain hunters out there do the same.

                Support your local travel agent

Well trying to find a genuine deal on teletext holidays is a nightmare. You sit there eyes glued to th screen pen in hand thinking great fantastic offers at knock down prices. You can travel anywhere for almost nothing. You sit write down all the phone numbers to call hoping to get a bargain of a lifetime. Your partner is trying on his thong and either dousing himself with fake tan or installed under the sunbed getting a bit of colour in preparation for the paraded along the beach trying to catch the eye of any passingbeach babe.
Dream on. The truth is that when you come off the phone after phoning for hour on end trying to get the advertised dream break. You land up putting on your coat and driving down the High Street to the local tavel agent spend 20 minutes and hey presto you have the perfect holiday at the price you want. My advice is don't waste your time with telext support your local travel agent. You get a much better deal all round and no heavy phone bill

                  • "LYING PUSHY STAFF"

I have been using a company called goldtrail.co.uk / Quickstep Travel (both the same company) I would advise nobody to use this company, as I have had a dreadful time trying to reclaim a deposit that was wrongfully taken from my account. To add to my problems I discovered that they had swipped my card twice, doubling the deposit withdrawl, leaving me with an overdraft. The whole problem occured because they gave be a holiday, I was satisfied with, and then called back telling me the holiday was not available as it could not accomodate my family and me. The operater then -in a very pushy sales technique- attempted to offer me other resorts, and even advised me to ask my managment if I could change my holidays. Which was out of the question. Due to this I did not expect any money to be taken from my account, however I couldn't believe it when £904 had been taken from my account. This company had taken this money, and were providing me with no serivce. I called, after being passed from one person to another, after no return calls, I eventually reached John- the manager. Who stated that my story on the whole was not true, and that the holiday was always available. Which is outrageous as I have no reason to lie about such an incident. I decided to call trading standards, who advised me that under the distance selling act, I had the right to a full refund. I had to state in writing that the the holiday was cancelled and I expect the whole amount to be repaid into my account. When I put this to John the manager, he was not aware of this. He was adament that the money would be taken from my account. I am still currently attempting to regain the money that is legally mine. Overall a total nightmare. Do not use their services.

Searching for holidays online can be a bit of a minefield, one the one hand you can find great deals and see a range of choice that you may not find walking around travel agents and looking through brochures. However, the choice and different website can be bewildering. This is why teletext is such a great site to look at. Essentially it's like a portal site linking you to holiday offers based on the requirements you enter into their search engine. The home page is well organised and the different sections are colour coded, I like a bit of colour coding! On the homepage you have the opportunity to do a quick search for a holiday based on where and when you want to go, how much you want to pay and where you want to go from, if you want you can order the results by price, date, destination, departure point and holiday company. After you've done this you will get a list of results. If you click on one of these results you'll be taken to a separate page with brief details of the holiday, the name of the company, a link to their website if they have one and a phone number to ring to book the holiday. There are five tabs at the top of the homepage that relate to different types of holidays these are Overseas, UK and Ireland, Flights, Ski and Cruise. 1 OVERSEAS Clicking on the overseas tab will take you to a page with the offers of the week and links for holiday searches, late deals, guides and ideas, holiday essentials and advice. HOLIDAY SEARCH This is a more detailed version of the search on the home page. You can search by destination, departure date and departure range, duration, board basis, price range and share basis you can also order the results by any of these variables. You can look through the port guide which is a guide to the cruise areas of the world I've only really used this site too look for holidays and look at the teletext ads so when I had a good look around the site I was amazed at just what this site did have. Particularly interesting I think were the destination guides and the way you can match your interests up with holidays. I've always found the site easy to use and simple to navigate, it's always really clear what part of the site you are in, so there is no chance of getting 'lost' within the site. Teletext doesn't have every possible holiday on it and I've found things elsewhere that weren't on teletext. So I always tend to check the websites
of the holiday companies that are offering holidays on teletext, just in case there are some deals that haven't been included on teletext. Don't take what comes up on the screen as gospel we've tried ringing up for several holidays advertised on teletext to find that they're no longer available. The holiday companies can move quicker than the updating of the teletext database. Also it's a good idea to ring round some companies anyway just in case they have something that hasn't yet been added to teletext. Despite this it's a great site to look, it's very comprehensive and must be useful to people who go on slightly 'different' holidays such as cruises and skiing. thanks for reading!

                      Advantages

                      Disadvantages

Recently i decided to go to Greece with my partner and unusually said he could make the travel arrangements. We booked through travelbargains after seeing the holiday we wanted on teletext. There is no way to contact them properly other than by phone, no browsing options are fully avaiable. Over the internet their online forms never seem to work. Instead they provided us with several phone numbers and we seem to have spent hours on the phone with them. They could not get us the holiday we wanted, but instead offered us something similar for a little more. We then paid and discovered that actually they had not included transfers to the hotel, a meal on the plane, aiport taxes etc etc. The company also lost £100 of our money somewhere a long the line, luckily i had the cheque registered by my bank as proof of payment and so they had to accept this. I like to think of myself as an experienced traveller and always book my travel online finding deals myself. This experience has been a shock, i feel as though they have truly ripped us off. We have had to add £120 in total on top of what we agreed to pay. When i tried to cancel the holiday they stated that they would take 70-100% of the price and so we are now going on this holiday. But for other consumers - think carefully before booking with travel bargains.

                        Disadvantages

Hunting for last minute holidays can be a total nightmare with scores of websites from travel agents and tour operators proposing to offer the best deals around. Often what seems like a bargain actually turns out to be a total rip off when you are informed on the phone that the price was based on 12 sharing or has additional late ticket collection fees which bump up the cost. The itv teletext pages provide a valuable wealth of information from all the major tour operators which enables you to gain access to the best late deals available. However the only, and major problem with this service was having to sit for ages while the pages scroll round seemingly indefinitely, waiting for the right page to appear. Thankfully now all this information is available on the web at www.teletextholidays.co.uk. This site enables you to search the database for holidays that fit your individual requirements such as departure dates, airport choice, destination, length of stay etc. and at the touch of a button gives you a list of holidays that meet these needs. Although this search facility does need fine tuning, for example you can't narrow it down to self catering only, or search on the basis of the number of people in your group, this information is displayed on screen so it is much easy to pick out applicable holidays. The site also contains links to the relevant tour operators homepage so more details can be found out about the accomodation (if it is named) before you call up to book the holiday. Also any known additional charges are displayed so you don't get caught out when you go to book the holiday. This is a useful site to save time on holiday searching although clearly the potential is there to improve the search facility to make things even easier. Luckily I was able to find a week in Majorca for £149pp in named accomodation. There are bargains out there and they are much easier to find on this site than anything else I have found on the web.

                        • "Takes a long time to see all you want!"

We have always booked our holidays through a travel agent. We love to sit and look at many brochures, comparing pictures and prices and we have tended to book months and months once even a year before going! But this year our neighbour came round to use our ceefax, she is divorsed so she was after a single room in Gran Canaria. Well after spending hours scanning all the pages, (don't they turn slowly!) she found a great bargain an all inclusive holiday for a week at only £299. So she phoned from our home, really excited! Alas that was for an apartment, with at least two sharing. Anyway to cut a long story short we decided to join her and had a great time. I would suggest to help getting the place you want, it is wise to know what area you want to stay in. We were well pleased with our holiday, we had value for money. We saved over £300 off brochure price and we would definately book through them again.I also suggest that you take out an annual holiday insurance, shop round you save loads of money in doing it this way.

Having visited all Travel Agents in our area for quotes on flights to Australia, we have always come up with the same answer-Much too expensive (upto £1200) or no chance of getting there for the christmas period. We have been told time and again that to go christmas time we really should book at least 10 months before. Then a couple of weeks ago Teletext came up with some really good seat sales, but trying to get through was a nightmare eventually when we did get through all seats were fully booked. One week later came more seat sales so we decided to start ringing just before the opening time and by 9.10am everything was booked. The staff were extremely helpful, put the tickets on hold for us while we rang through to Australia to check the dates were o.k and happily answered all of our queries. We decided to take their insurance, although they didn't push it, and they are also arranging our visas.Insurance was £58.00 for one adult and one teenager. Visas were £10 each. The cofirmation papers with all details of flight times and connecting flights came through 3 days later. Over all we were very happy with the service. Sorry nearly forgot the most important thing--Price £539.00 per person including airport tax. Flying with Singapore Airlines. **UPDATE** Since writing this opinion I have now received the tickets, Visa and insurance papers. The full price which is printed on the tickets would have been £1368.00, a saving of over £800!!
