Wouldn't use the Gatwick Flyer ever again, thought service was pretty poor. Originally tried to book for a group of 15 going to the airport but we were told there was only 12 spaces available on the minibus. Some of our group then had to make alternative arrangements, however, on the morning of departure there were only 12 passengers on a 23 seater bus.
Coming home our flight was delayed and we got to the bus stop approx 15 mins late. Fully understand that there is a schedule, but on phoning the office we were told bus had departed promptly at 7.05 and we would have to wait 2 hours for the next one. They knew about our booking, couldn't someone have called?
To top it off, we arrived early for the 9.05 bus, knowing that they have to leave dead on time, only to stand there until 9.15 watching the driver drink his coffee and eat his breakfast! Didn't leave until 9.20. How unlucky were we that this didnt happen at 7oclock.
Would agree that bus is too small and too many drop offs which are not really that close.
We have booked bus to get to stansted airport with family of 6 including baby. Bus had only 2 more people from Southend travelling with us. Behaviour of the driver was strange from first trip to the airport. He has arrived more than 40min later then our booking, claiming that we dont need to rush we have plenty of time to get to the airport- I want to know how he justified it as London airports are extremely busy and there is no room for mistake. On the way back it was huge queue coming out customs but we made it to the bus on time, however driver did not want to put luggages in from my husband who run earlier in order tp make it easier for the driver. He has claimed that he cant put our luggages in until all family is present. Couple was already waiting inside for us. On the way back was massive backlog due to accident on m25 and our driver has decided without telling our family to drive to Southend to drop off couple first eveb though our house was on the way from the airport. It took us 3h to get home with the baby thank God sleping and being calm. When askwd why we are being dropped off last he came up with excuse that he needs to make a round and cant drive 20 miles away to our house ( but yet he could drive us 2 hours to and from Southend instead???). After being asked he get agitated driving so wild he almost killed guy on a zebra crossing. Our baby was shaken in his seat until we got home. We have noticed that company is from Hornchurch which is closw to our housw so it looks like guy has created story so he can get home with us, however there was no empathy regarding baby and that sjould never happen to us. Also he made racist remarks to English people from Southend regarding Polish people we could hear from the back and tjis is disgrace because almost all our family was Polish living in this country long time working for goverment. We have also noticed he walked couple to their house carrying their luggage taking his time when we were waiting to be dropped of in the middle of the night hour away from home. Stay away from this company, white van man rudeness and its not family friendly whatsoever. Will not recommend to anyone and trust me Im an easygoing person travelling the world.
The most unhelpful organisation ever. Do not use them. Very rude staff who don't admit to their mistakes. For a 9 o clock flight they verbally arranged a pickup of 5.20 only to turn up at the door at 3.20 possibly to save on costs and number of journeys, or due to an error in logging the booking at 15:22 (maybe thinking they were writing 5.22?) . When questioned, driver was very rude and said that I had to go now otherwise would lose the slot. When admin offices were contacted to discuss the situation, they were just as dismissive and unhelpful, with no apology or offer of any compensation. A complete shambles of an organisation.
We have used Gatwick Flyer for a few years now and have recommended them to our friends and family they also go by gatwick flyer now, we have always had excellent service, polite drivers, easy bookings etc. the luxury of being picked up and dropped off makes travelling a pleasure, we hope they keep up this good service, well done Gatwick Flyers staff you are great.
Gatwick Flyer - Great service for 15 yrsBeen using them regularly for past 15 year ( 4-5 times a year)and have always found them to be great. Been the occasional problem out of their control e.g. motorway blocked due to accident etc, but they have always delivered a service as advertise. Yep, often the coaches link up to transfer people heading in the same direction but this is a minor issue. A pain free and reliable start and finish to your holidays. Finally, I have no link whatsoever with this company but it seems that only negative reviews are appreciated by some people. Highly recommended !!!
I've decided to stop using the Gatwick Flyer. I've used it more than 20 times in the last four years but it's no longer the service it was. Last time I used it we were at Thurrock for almost forty minutes waiting for another minibus to join us. Why couldn't they have picked us up a bit later? When we did finally set off for Gatwick the driver drove as if he was on a promise. The leg room is awful - worse than any charter aircraft. I'm only 5ft 4in and I was cramped. How on earth does anyone tall manage?
I've just been looking on the website and see that there's a surcharge of £10 per person for using the "service" on Christmas Eve!!!!! How can they possibly justify that - especially in the present economic climate - as anything other than pure greed? Christmas Eve is a Wednesday - they won't be paying their drivers overtime. Disgraceful!
I have used the Gatwick Flyer 6 times over the past 2 years and have always found their service to be friendly, efficient and great value for money. Fortunately, due to my locale I am picked up and dropped off door-to-door, but given the fact that a taxi would cost £65 each way it is my only financially viable option.
It may take longer than in a cab but the coaches are comfortable and clean and although there is a stop off at the services area near Lakeside to swap over of Gatwick & Stansted passengers this only takes around 10 mins.
I would however advise people to be sensible when they book.
I tend to book the earlier timed flyer than I need. Although I sit in the airport longer it is a lot less stressfull than sitting on the coach in traffic thinking am I going to make my flight in time!?
Finally, to the man who reviewed this service in 2003 and claimed it ruined his honeymoon (& it seems that there are a lot of people who take creedance in what he noted 5 years ago) YOU CHEAPSKATE!!! Making your new wife stand at a bus stop at that sort of time in the morning in the cold - you should be ashamed of yourself!!!
The Gatwick Flyer had been recommended to me , but I was told it went door to door - not always so. I live in a village approx 3 miles from Brentwood and was looking to get to Gatwick by around 4AM. I was told that they did not pick up near me and the nearest place would be Brentwood High Street. So the proposal was that I would be stood in the high street at around 1 in the morning waiting for the pick-up. Since Brentwood high st is mainly full of nasty theme pubs and fast food outlets open till all hours it is not exactly the best place to be waiting around. Added to that would be the costs of transport from my house to the high street and back again at the end of the holiday.
All considered the Gatwick Flyer is not as user freindly as it may at first appear.
Just read Ms Rennie's comments and have to think "get a life". Honestly, common sense would tell you that if you cant get to the bus stop on time to get the bus, then wait in the WARM in the airport till the next one. You get what you pay for in this life and if it is cheap then it will offer a lesser service than a dearer one. I have used Gatwick Flyer since it started and yes, sometimes you JUST miss the bus, and have to wait in the airport for an extra hour. And yes, sometimes they are 10 mins late picking you up. Just arrange your schedule accordingly. Compare parking your car at Gatwick and taking the Gatwick Flyer can work out the same but no hassle of driving. You can even doze on the bus and wait to be told you are there!
The experiences of my husband and I with the Gatwick Flyer have all been very good, with no complaints. The buses have always been on time and the drivers polite and courteous. Last Sunday we used the Flyer just to transport us to and from Gatwick where we were meeting relatives for a celebratory meal at The Hilton before they flew off to Las Palmas. Having seen the other passengers off the bus, the driver then took us round to the door at The Hilton as he had twenty-five minutes before his departure. The journey to and from Gatwick was very smooth and quick, in fact we arrived quite early at the airport. I do understand the comments about the small seats but we could have sat separately and the journey did only take forty-five minutes. We will definitely use the Flyer when we fly from Gatwick in the future.
Thanks to your disgusting service, 21-01-08 I have been sick for a week. You gave us a time to pick up the bus from Gatwick, you obviously got your sums wrong. It was impossible to get from the plane, which was on time by the way, to pick up the bus that you had booked us on.But, we were less than two minutes late, so also were another couple, who had actually phoned you and asked you to stall for five minutes, to which the answer was no sorry cant do that. ! ! there was another bus in 2 hrs time 11-05pm Which was eight minutes late.Your driver was rude , and drove like a maniac, going over speed bumps like he was enjoying himself, not giving a thought to an 83 +72 yr old couple Shirley Rennie
Ive used the gatwick flyer about 8 times over the past 10 years. I have found them excellent. Booking people are friendly. Drivers are friendly but concentrate on the road. I have always been picked up on time, the buses have left on time and usually arrive early and once when i was waiting at the wrong terminal at gatwick the driver came round and picked me up!! Drivers drive a bit fast but im a crawler in the slow lane so its probably the norm.
As a frequent flyer I have used the 'Gatwick Flyer' service about 6 times a year for the past 18 years. My experience of the service has been very good. There has been the occasional snag e.g bus breaking down once, caught in a 6 hour traffic jam once, but these issues could happen to any service. The booking procedure is simple and the service received has always been polite and helpful. Except on the very rare occasion, the bus has always been on schedule. The drivers are pleasant and the travelling conditions satisfactory. Often the buses link up at Thurrock to make sure passengers from a given area will be on the same bus - this can sometimes be a little annoying but it's no real problem. I feel that the comments left by the other reviewers, although probably genuinely felt and most unfortunate, are not a fair reflection of the service. The other 99% of happy customers probably do not bother to post their experiences. For what it's worth, I'm not linked in anyway to the service but felt it only fair to give my opinion of a decent and NOT a rip off/cowboy company. Long may it continue.
Thanks for the tips, i was just about to book the service and having read your bitter experience, i don't think i will risk it.i will rather drive to the airport and use the car park than to risk getting stranded or miss my flight.
I have just read the review by aefra and It is my opinion that she either owns the company or works for it (Why else would you have a picture of their minibus?). My wife and I had the misfortune of using the Gatwick Flyer for our honeymoon and unfortunately they made it a honeymoon to remember for all the wrong reasons. Firstly we were left waiting for over an hour and a half at a bus stop at 3 o'clock in the morning in sub-zero temperature. After ringing and ringing the emergency mobile number we were told the minibus was on his way but had hit traffic? Funny that the roads were empty and only 3 cars had passed us all morning. Half an hour later the Gatwick flyer minibus did appear but just carried on past us ignoring me waving him down in the middle of the road. Now very cold and very annoyed I called the idiot on the emergency mobile who said he would send a minicab. The minicab driver turned up and informed me that they were always getting called to bail out stranded customers because Gatwick Flyer and Avon Coaches were so badly run and dis-organised. He then informed us that we had to pick another stranded customer up from Rainham (miles away) and he woud then be dropping us off at Thurrock services where we would be picked up by coach. Anyway after eventually getting to our destination to start our honeymoon highly stressed, I then came down with a bad cold for the first week due to standing at that bus stop stranded. Two weeks later we were at Gatwick waiting for the return flyer (which was late) and got on board a small cramped minibus which you could only get your legs in the seats if you were 6 years old. After the neanderthal driver finally ugged and manged to count to 16 he told one couple that they couldn't get on for some reason. We then commenced about 3 miles down the motorway with the driver talking on his mobile swerving about when he turned around and said that we had to go back to Gatwick to pick up the couple
he had refused. We got back there and the couple were no where to be seen. 20 minutes later the couple appeared and we were on our way again. An Hour later we pulled into Thurrock services and met with another minibus full of suffering customers, it was then that we were told that we would be swapping busses as they juggle the people depending on the destinations. (We were not informed of this procedure when we booked but it is apparently the norm) The drivers had taken about 40 minutes working out who was taking who and at the end of it we were on a bus with people from basildon and places further a field. We lived in Romford and were told we were the last drop off which would have been about another hour and a half. That was the straw that broke the camels back. We just got of and rang a Taxi to pick us up from Thurrock services. We called Gatwick Flyer and asked for a refund which they refused. They ruined our honeymoon and turned out to be the most incompetent dis-organised company I have ever had the mis-fortune to deal with, and their customer services were no better. I warn you all to beware using them. Yes they are cheap but above tells you why. I recommend paying a little extra and using alternatives, it's not worth the upset and having your holiday ruined when you've saved all year for it. Yes there are other positive reviews on here but who knows who wrote them, and do you want to risk being one of the ones who has their hols ruined.
