My daughter, a dedicated Harry Potter fan was chuffed to bits went Santa left this in the bottom of her sack on Christmas morning. It cost £12.99 from Argos and at this time of year, very difficult to get hold of. After opening, she couldn't wait to get it open and start swinging it around her head just like her idol Hermione. The wand is made of hard plastic and requires 2 x AAA batteries. These were a bit fiddly to put in as a very small screwdriver is needed to take the small cover off which is located at the side of the wand. Once they were in, the tip of the wand immediately lit up, now came the tricky part. As the wand is voice activated, it first needed setting up before using. The wand has two commands, 'lumos' to switch the light on and 'nox' to turn it off. This sounds very staight forward but believe me, setting it up was a nightmare. At the side of the wand is a little button which you use to programme the wand to it's commands. The idea is to press it once until the red led flashes and say 'Lumos', then repeat the process until it flashes twice and say 'Nox', then the wand is then ready for play. Easier said than done! After nearly an hour of my daughter, my husband and myself taking turns to talk, shout, scream at the wand, it still would not programme properly and the LED was still flashing. After reading the instructions several times we gave up. There is a chance that the wand works fine and we were doing it wrong but it certainly isn't the simplest toy to set up by any one's standards. Luckily for us, the wand has another feature to activate the light. If it is shaken twice the light comes on. Hooray! and shake it twice again for the wand to deactivate. This seemed to work fine but in theory makes the voice activation slightly pointless. There was a part of me slightly suspicious about there reasons for including this feature as a sort of back up plan (hmmm!). This was enough to please my daughter who spent the rest of the day casting all sorts of spells on our non too pleased cat. This aside, the wand seems pretty heavy duty, having been dropped several times with no scratches or cracks. The light feature is actually surprisingly bright, and reminds me of a little torch. When lighting the wand, it also makes a twinkly 'casting a spell' sound which really adds to the effect. Although far from perfect, due to the theme of this product, it has brought my daughter a lot of joy. However, it does have its faults, so unless a twinkling plastic torch is what you're after, unfortunately this may lead to disappointment. Also on Ciao under the user name of Supersweep.
As many DooYooers know, I am a big Harry Potter fan. It is such an amazing collection of books and I have been reading them for nearly 10 years now. I still have a very old copy of the first book which I will be keeping forever. But I have a lot of Harry Potter memororbillia which I have collected over the years! Here is one of my favorites! The PopCo intereractive wand was released along with the latest (currently) film "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix." This is always a smart move as you get hyped up fan wanting to be like their favorite characters (like myself!) so this is an excellent selling point. Now I had bought a wand for halloween 4 years ago which was pretty bad plastic with a light. However it did the job and was great fun in re-inacting our favorite scenes from the Harry Potter movies. Now I also have another wand from the NOBLE COLLECTION which is a collectors piece which I got for Christmas 2 years ago. It is absolutely beautiful and is an exact replica of the one used in the film. So I was accustomed to find a good wand :) I was looking in Woolworths one day (Please survive Woolworths!) after I had seen the 5th Harry Potter for the 2nd time in the cinema. Now I had bought other merchandise from the film including a scarf and ornaments. But I never thought of buying a wand. I was going to buy a figure of Harry but then I noticed Woolies were doing a deal. Buy any Harry Potter product and get half price of the lowest priced item. GREAT! So I found this! The packaging was the familiar face of Harry in the themed dark green. You had the option to press the button to see what it did. So me being me had to do it. I got a bit of a fright. It made a really cool noise, exactly the same from the film and some really nice lights went on. Cool! Was the first thing I thought. However I saw the price of £12.99 which is quite a lot. It is on Amazon for £16.99 which is serious price inflation. However it can be bought new from Ebay and ToysRUs for a very cheap price. Also check Woolworths as according to the current Economic climate, you will be able to get some great deals. However I was in the Harry Potter mood so bought it! When I got it out the packaging (which I completely recycled) I wanted to really have a go. So I swished and flicked, while saying the famous phrase: "Wingardium Leveosa" It is quite a long wand, at around 36cm. It is pretty light and is very comfortable to hold. What I like is the detail on it, on the handle is a lovely design surrounding the button which makes you feel more magical. The lights are really good and effective. As you swish it, it turns on at exactly the right time. If you click the button you get both sounds and lights which are really effective. The sounds are just out of the movie, giving some more realism! It is pretty life like for Harry's wand. This I have to say for a 16 year old is great fun! Now this is obviously more for children but as us Harry Potter readers are getting older it will also do for us. It is not recommended for under 4's but I would hope that they hadn't seen the film anyway as it is pretty scary. There are a couple of wands to choose from, if your childs favorite character isn't Harry, there is also Hermiones, Ron's, Voldemorts and Malfoys. These are all at the same price, although I have to say that Voldemorts wand is the most impressive, and even though he actually wasn't in the last movie, his wand was featured in the Goblet Of Fire. Overall this is a excellent product of the Harry Potter merchandise. If you children and teenagers are really into Harry Potter then this would be an excellent gift. This is also what Harry Potter lovers collect. It is a great fun toy with great sound effects, and a nice light sleek design overall. It already comes with batteries which is an added bonus so it can be used straight away. Scotlandizdabest 2008 - Dooyoo.co.uk
What kid doesn't want to go to Hogwarts? Press the button to activate the wand and wave it to make a sound and produce a light at the tip.
