      Hyena comedy cafe

I enjoy comedy and about once every coupleof months or so,we tend to find ourselves in this comedy café. Most recently we went for a friend's birthday, and with a group of 6 of us, it makes for a more interesting evening than just standing in bars.

The venue is situated in the centre of Newcastle and there is plenty of parking close by, free in the evening. There are also good transport links, and with it being close to St James Park, there is also a metro station.

The website gives information about the comedians but unless you are really into this type of comedy, then it's not always going to be someone you have heard of. The first thing to do is book; I have found that it is usually very busy and so if a party turns up on the night, there is very little chance of gaining entry. It costs £13 per person which isn't expensive for city centre entertainment. As well as the comedy show, this gives entry to Maddisons night club for anyone who wants to extend their night out- we tend to find that the !!.30pm finish is quite late enough for us!

Doors open around 6.30pk and close at 8pm, but if you have booked there is no reason to get there especially early as the comedians don't start till about 9pm. On arrival, a doorman gives you the rules and regulations such a no heckling, and no noisy mobile phones, which is a fair enough request. When you are inside the venue, your name is taken and then your party is quickly seated at one of the tables. The tables are all over the place, with a long wooden table in the centre of the room which is usually taken up by very large parties, and smaller tables for 4, 6 and 2 peple dotted around the room- every spare space is taken up with tables, and I don't like being in the middle of the place as it is quite difficult to fight your way through to the bar or the toilet. The bar itself is long and well staffed, so during the breaks you do tend to get served very quickly.

The evening tends to take the same format with the compere starting at around 9pm, and then 3 different comedians taking the stage- if you want to e involved, then the best thing to do is to sit at the front, and this will almost certainly happen! Obviously the quality of the comedy depends very much on the comedians on stage that night, but we have found that there is always at least one of the comedians who is really funny. Between acts, there is a short break which is an ideal time to head to the bar or toilet.

      **Verdict...**

This is a really fun and inexpensive evening out. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the doormen are polite when people are talking too loudly, when asking them to tone it down!

Food can also be bought and eaten in the place and private venues can be booked although we like the atmosphere of a Saturday night.

I would recommend this place for anyone wanting an experience other than bars or nightclubs.

      Thanks for reading
