Sugared almonds are a pretty looking sweet. They are almonds covered in a hard sugar with a colour on the outside. Most sugared almonds are a pastel colour, either cream, light pink, light purple or light yellow. Most sweet shops sell these in mixed colours. I have had a look in supermarkets but none I have been in seem to sell these.
I think maybe they are a slightly old fashioned sweet now as I remember my grandparents always having them around Christmas time.
These sweets are really hard and so I advise sucking them to soften the sugar as otherwise you could really do your teeth some damage.
Earlier this year I got married and we came across sugared almonds when looking at wedding favours. I believe that the tradition of giving 5 sugared almonds comes from Italy and they symbolise health, wealth, happiness, long life and fertility. I really liked the idea of our wedding favours having a meaning behind them and this is why we chose sugared almonds.
So that our guests knew the meaning we enclosed a little note in each wedding favour bag with the below poem on which I found on the Internet.
Five sugared almonds for each guest to eat
To remind us that life is both bitter and sweet.
Five wishes for the new husband and wife -
Health, wealth, happiness, children, and a long life!
I bought our sugared almonds off of Amazon. The first seller I bought from was useless, they sent the wrong colours and loads of them were chipped so I returned them for a refund. The second seller I bought from on Amazon was great. We purchased cream, light pink and some gold sugared almonds. The gold ones were quite expensive and hard to find but they filled with our colour theme well.
I think that sugared almonds make a great wedding favour as there is a meaning behind them and you can eat them!
