“ Brand: Soltan / Type: Sun Protection / Suitable for: Face / UV Protection Factor: SPF 30 „
During the summer I like to use an actual sun cream on my face rather than just my regular moisturiser, which only contains SPF15. The sun cream I've been using for the last couple of months is Soltan Once Face SPF 30, made by Boots.
The Soltan Once range claims to be different to regular sun cream in that you only need one application every 8 hours, which is handy - although if I'm not out in the full sun all day I don't tend to reapply sun cream in any case. I originally bought this because my local Boots had run out of their original Soltan SPF30 for the face, so thought I'd try this one.
Soltan Once Face claims to be a 'moisturising suncare cream' and it certainly is - I don't need to use a moisturiser on top of it, and actually by the end of the day my face is looking oilier than it usually would, so it certainly moisturises. The oiliness isn't really a complaint about this product as this always happens to me with sun cream as my face is a bit oily, so I'm not sure how greasy it would be for someone with normal or dry skin, for example. The product also says it's water-resistant, suitable for all skin types, dermatologist approved, non-pore blocking and suitable for use under makeup. I can vouch for the last two claims, as it's not blocked my pores or caused me any spots (which some sun creams do) and my mineral foundation sits happily on top of it. Moreover, I've not experienced any sunburn while using this product! (Although I should add that I don't actually sunbathe or make a habit of getting burnt!).
The product comes in a 50ml tube, which you squeeze to dispense the cream. I've not had any problems with the packaging. As for how long it lasts, I've been applying it nearly every day for at least 6 weeks now and there's still some remaining in the tube. The instructions say to use about 1 teaspoon's worth of cream for your face and neck, which is probably the amount I use.
This tube is priced at £5.49 at the moment, but this is half-price as Soltan products are currently on offer. Boots do seem to have frequent offers on their sun care products over the summer, so I don't think it's hard to avoid paying full-price for this. Obviously it's only sold at Boots, as this is a Boots' own brand product range.
Overall, a very good product at a good price when on offer. I'd like it to be a bit less greasy, but this is probably not realistic for a sun cream so I'm not deducting any stars for this!
Thanks for reading.
=Soltan Once Face SPF30=
I tend to stick to about 3 brands of Suntan lotion, as my main suntan products, which are Avon, Boots Soltan, and Nivea.
=For the Face=
The main reason I brought this was that it was for the face and was a factor 30.
=Protection / UVA=
The cream has a 5 star UVA protection and also an ultra UV aging defence formula. The Soltan is a once a day application, as it provided you with up to 8 hours of protection in the sun and 40 minutes of water exposure within that time. The cream is also water resistant.
=Size of Bottle=
A 50 ml bottle, contains 40 applications.
It is recommended that you need about a teaspoon full of cream and this is sufficient to cover your face ,
You do need to rub the cream in to ensure that you get an even distribution across the skin, and also that it is rubbed in, it does have a slightly greasy feel to it.
My skin felt soft after applying and after spending the days out in the sun, I didn't burn my face, although my nose did burn on one occasion, but we had an exceptional weather, 35C, when weather forecast generally for the time of year, would be a maximum of 25C.
=All Skin types=
This crean is suitable for all skin types, and is dermtolgically tested.
I paid £2.25 for the 50ml bottle, as it was purchased during a half price promotion, the recommended price is £5.49 which is good value for money.
=Be careful of clothes=
As with all sun tan lotions, just take care around clothes, as it can stain, got some on a top as we decided to eat breakfast in the restaurant, and rather than a sarong around me, I popped a top on and as it went over my head, I caught some on the neckline I did try to wash out while away, but travel was not strong enough.
I also use this on a daily basis on my daughter for school, as it lasts all day and gives her coverage for playtime, PE and sports day, a quick 30 seconds to apply and we are done.
=Would I recommend=
I would highly recommend this suntan lotion, and it is one I would buy again, for both future trips and for the UK,
I have recently stocked up on suncreams for my pending holiday one of which is Boot Soltan Once for my face. I have used Soltan creams for many years after converting from Nivea on the recommendation of a friend and I especially like this one for my face. I have a typical English rose complexion and also quite sensitive skin and find this cream suits me perfectly.
The cream provides you with up to 8 hours of protection and has an ultra UV-aging defence formula. It also has 5 star UVA protection and protects against long term skin damage and premature aging caused by the sun. This is very important to me as I do try to look after my skin at my age and will never sunbathe or stay out in the sun for to long without applying sun cream!
The cream claims to be water resistant but I sometimes put a thin layer on after I have been in the water for some time which may not really be necessary but I just like to make sure that I am fully protected. The cream feels quite light in consistency but you do have to rub it in well as it can leave you with a slightly ghostly hint at first until it either soaks in or you rub it in properly. My skin feels soft and moisturised straight away and I am confident that my face is fully protected against the suns rays.
It is suitable for all skin types and is dermatologically tested, and you can wear it under make up which gives you a good base before going out into the sun. It has a lovely fresh holiday smell and not too feminine so is suitable for both sexes.
The equivalent of one teaspoon is sufficient to cover your face and neck and you apply the cream 15 minutes before going out in the sun. This application will allow you to be out in the sun for 8 hours and to have 40 minutes water exposure however personally I do apply the cream again after a few hours on my sensitive parts which are my chest, neck and top of my feet. The 30ml bottle contains 20 applications and is easily removable by showering or using facial wipes.
The only disadvantage for me is that it has stained a few white tops when the cream has come into contact with them and even with washing has not completely disappeared but I think this is the case with most sun creams and it does enable me to buy some new tops!
I paid £5.49 for this 50ml bottle which is half the recommended retail price. Also Boots have frequent offers of 3 for 2 or buy one get one free so it is best to stock up when you see these offers as it is definitely worth it.
I love this sun cream, it gives me confidence that my skin is protected as much as it can be in the sunshine and is one less thing to worry about which gives me more time to just lie back on the sun lounger and.....relax!
Before I get stuck into this review I must point out that I am reviewing Soltan Once for the face however my version does contain a gradual tan as well. I did ask for a separate link to write about this but the people at Dooyoo told me to plonk my review here so here I am!
In the summer, as most of us are aware we need suncream/lotion or whatever to protect our facial skin from damage. Personally up until purchasing this product I had never used one but when I spotted this costing £4.00 containing an SPF of and a medium gradual tanning colour I decided that I could wear it in place of a foundation but still with protection with a bit of luck!
The tube of product comes in a light brown an whitish coloured oblong box and on the front of it we are told that it is Boots Soltan Once, 'Face + Gradual Tan' and that the shade is medium and that '1 application gives SPF 15 for up to 6 hours' and that it protects from DNA damage (providing you follow the instructions on the reverse of box and tube) and that it is 'Easily absorbed moisturising light texture'. On the back of the box other information listed includes being told a bit about the product and how to use it etc, the ingredients are listed as is the size (which in this case is 50ml) and contact details for Boots are given. The tube is pretty much the same in its coloursheme and is made of plastic and is squeezy with a flip top lid opening to the bottom of it concealing a small hole and once again holds much the same information as is listed on the box. Informative, unisex looking packaging this is and very easy to use indeed.
Well using this is really very simple indeed. The lotion has a nice fresh fragrance to it and is sweet and creamy really and doesn't smell particularly of flowers or fruits or anything like that, it really is just nice enough! Its a runny cream and all you need to do is apply about a teaspoonful to the face and neck and onto clean skin. This can be worn alone or under make up and once applied you simply need to allow it to completely to sink in (takes around 15 minutes) and then you can expose yourself to the sun.
With this we are told that we can have 40 minutes in the water in a six hour period before having to reapply it so we should all get six hours of continuous protection after using this. We are told on the packaging to always reapply it if drying rigorously with a towel (I personally blot my face with a towel after using this) and I apply it daily anyway in the heat and when going outdoors.
Its a nice smooth lotion in use, a little goes a long way and it basically moisturises the skin in a none greasy way though does take a good few minutes to dry in. The colour, although medium in my colour choice (also available in light and dark) is really rather light in colour and in fact a sort of oatmeal beige shade when being applied and is very subtle indeed and I needed to use this a week before even getting a hint of colour at all on my face. Being so light it doesn't give my face a tango sheen but a very natural glow and a really subtle hint of colour!
This protects my skin from burning and from general exposure to the elements so I can use this even when the sun isn't shining. Its comfortable on, unfussy to use and doesn't irritate my sensitive skin at all! A great product from the people at Boots once again!
This product usually costs £9.99 a 50ml tube (the only size it is available to purchase in) but at the time of writing this review is on offer for £4.99 a tube and further on offer with some products (including this!) being in a 3 for the price of 2 deal!
With the nice weather that we have been having for the past few weeks I stocked up on some Soltan products when I was in boots as they were on a buy one get one free promotion when I was in.
I am generally a fan of soltan products as I believe they offer great protection for a not to astonomical price. I have been using my current bottle of once since last summer and there is still some in it so I won't have to use my new one's until my summer holiday so they last for ages.
The once face lotion is £9.99 and comes in a 50ml bottle. I really love the once range for both me and the kids as it is designed to only be applied once a day usually in the morning and it will give you 8 hours of protection from the sun.
The good thing about soltan is that it has 5 star UV protection and really protects from both the signs of sun damage that you can see with the eye and those that you can't actually see.
The face lotion actually looks like clay as opposed to a cream but it absorbs quite well and doesnt leave a horrible chalky residue on the skin. It can be quite shiny and greasy looking when it is first applied but this soon goes away and it leaves my skin feeling nice and soft.
I have never had a problem with my skin reacting whilst using it even though it is strongly perfumed.
Once I have the once face lotion on I really feel confident about going out in the sun and not worrying that I am going to get burnt. I don't doubt it lasts for the 8 hours given but if the sun is really strong I always re-apply after a few hours just to be on the safe side. To date I have never been burnt while wearing it even when spending long hours out in the sun.
I love the feeling that I no longe have to worry about reapplying every hour and it gives me the freedom to be able to go where I want in the sun without the fear of burning.
Obviously the fact that it stops the sun from causing damage to my skin at a cellular level which causes ageing is a bonus too.
It also doesn't leave my skin looking white like a lot of sunscreens and is almost unnoticable when it is on.
Although you only need to apply it once in 8 hours you will need to re-apply if you go swimming or towel vigorously. It has a water resistance formula but this is only really appropriate for sweat and not a full on swim in the sea.
Only a small amount is needed, the bottle says one teaspoon to cover the entire face and neck so the 50 ml bottle should last quite a long time.
I think that Soltan once face is brilliant and it is defintely one of my summer essentials.
We all know too much sun can cause skin cancer but sun exposure is also responsible for causing 80% of all visible skin aging so if you don't want to look like an old leather bag then you need to start wearing a sunscreen. A lot of people use the same sunscreen on their body as their face but body sunscreen can be too thick and rich for the face and cause breakouts and reactions for people with sensitive skin so you should really wear a sunscreen designed especially for facial skin.
Soltan once face is a high spectrum sunscreen from boots that is designed to be applied once a day providing UVB and five star UVB protection meaning that not only will it stop the light that causes burning from getting past it but also the different light that causes the ageing.
Soltan contains optisol which is a titanium dioxide containing a small amount of manganese in the crystal lattice. Now I have no idea what that actually means but I know that regular sunscreens start to break down upon contact with the skin while optisol is supposedly designed to allow it to remain stable for longer which is how it offers 6 hours of protection.
The cream itself is actually looks like clay and has a consistency of something like sudacrem. When you apply it you don't need a lot to cover your entire face and neck but it is really thick and not the easiest cream to rub in and absorb. It has quite a powerful scent that I don't really find offensive as it always reminds me of holidays but it may be too overpowering for someone who doesn't like their products to be strong smelling.
A problem for men is when you are not completely cleaned shaven the cream sticks to your stubble which looks a little strange and no matter how much you try to rub it in it stays there.
Once you have managed to rub it in it leaves your face feeling really sticky and gives you a slight Casper the friendly ghost glow meaning that no matter how much you try rubbing it in you will still look like you are wearing sunscreen which is not a problem on the beach but not so good for everyday use.
On its performance I cannot fault it, I am really sensitive to the sun and while wearing this I have never burnt so it does its job on that score however I have ended up really tanned so it obviously doesn't block the rays completely so may be good for people who are wanting to tan without burning but not so suitable for those people who want their skin to remain looking like milk.
It is available in tubes of 50ml in spf30 and you can also get it in spf15/25 that contain a gradual tan so good for those milk bottles wanting to have a bit of colour while building the natural tan slowly underneath.
It is also waterproof for up to 40 minutes so gives you plenty of time for swimming but you do need to reapply if you vigorously towel dry.
Yes it has problems with not being the easiest to rub in and the ghostly colour it leaves on your face but I still use it due to the sheer convenience of being able to apply it in the morning and not have to bother again for the rest of the day, I can never be bothered to reapply sunscreen every 40 minutes so I can put up with its faults.
It is available in most boots stores and online for £9.25 and as its coming up for summer boots currently have it on buy one get one free.
Definitely recommended for those people who like me forget to reapply enough and come home that uniquely British lobster red colour but not really for everyday use.
