“ Dover Leisure Centre is a multi sports leisure centre with swimming pools, sports hall, squash courts, health and fitness club and sauna/steam suite. „
Living in Dover means that we don't have too many facilities. Dover Leisure Centre is about the only sporting facility in Dover other than the football and rugby pitches. Location Dover Leisure Centre is located on Townwall Street in Dover which is pretty much on the seafront and within walking distance to the Port of Dover. It is also within walking distance of Dover town, Dover Priory Station and Pencester bus station. Facilities There are two swimming pools at Dover Leisure Centre. There is a main swimming pool which is 25 metres and also a learner / childrens pool. In the main pool, there are two lanes of the swimming pool which are sectioned off to create one slow, and one fast swimming lane. The rest of the pool is then literally just open water where people can swim at their own leisure. The smaller pool is much warmer than the large pool and is really designed for children and people learning to swim. At the side of the pool, there are boxes of swimming aids such as floats and armbands for visitors to use. There are swimming programmes such as exercise classes and swimming lessons which are held at various times during the day and evening. Details of these classes are normally found on leaflets that are in the main reception. There is a lifeguard on duty at all times in both of the pool areas. I have been swimming here on many occasions and have always found the pool to be clean. There are three sets of changing rooms male, female and family. Once you pay, you enter the changing rooms, and then leave through the other side of them into the pool. The Gym The Gym is fairly large and covers two floors. The top floor holds all the machines such as the treadmill, x trainers and step machines, and the bottom floor holds all the weight. The equipment is up to date and clean. The gym is fully air conditioned and has Sky TV which usually plays the music channels. I did have a Gym membership here but found that I didnt use it enough and therefore cancelled it. In my time as a member of this Gym, I found it to be very welcoming, with very friendly staff. As a member, you can get a personalised exercise programme after speaking to the members of staff and informing them of what you intend to achieve by using the Gym. The gym is open to members as well as non members. Viewing Area / Exercise Hall There is a viewing area where non swimmers can view the swimming pools. Alongside the main pool there are rows of seats so there is plenty of room for lots of spectators. Just along from the viewing area, there is an Exercise Hall where various exercise classes are held. Again, the details for these classes are normally found on leaflets at reception or you can download them from the Leisure Centre website. Main Hall The leisure centre has a large sports hall which is divided into half so you can hold separate events. Many sporting classes / events are held here such as football matches, badminton, basketball and many more. During the Summer, the leisure centre holds a Play Scheme where children can learn sports during the summer holidays. Squash Courts There are 3 squash courts which can be hired out. Café The café has recently been refurbished so it has a very modern feel to it. The café serves hot and cold drinks and also snacks. The bar has Sky TV and shows many of the sporting events such as football matches on a large screen.
This is an exellent leisure centre, I have been a few years ago and found it very nice and well organised. The entrance fee was about £2.10, and it was worth it, I went in the large pool and while I was there some of the lanes were closed off for adult training as there was a swimming event coming up and the adults needed to use the pool to train in. There are about 2 lifeguards on duty to keep an eye on the swimmers and they are fully trained in saving lives if anyone need help while swimming or if they get into any difficulty, they sit on a high chair to get a good view of the pool from all angles and they constantly go around the pool to make sure everyone is safe and if children are misbaving or an adult they will advise them to stop what they are doing, as some people children and adults alike tend to sometimes dive into a pool with no consideration for a swimmer. This was not the case when I visited this centre. I am not sure of the opening hours as I am not local, I was staying nearby on my way on holiday and my family were a little bit bored and so we did a search and found this pool nearby to go to, just to pass the time of day really while we were passing. There is a nice cafe inside and they do hot meals and beverages and the service is very good, and the meals do not take long to be delivered to you table. The parking is very good too and there is no charge for parking unlike some other centres, as some do charge to park and then take it from you admission amount but this centre did not have that policy. Very nice friendly centre and I recommend a visit.
