I am classic couch potato. I always KNOW that I should get up and go to the gym down the road but somehow, despite having a ridiculous sum taken out of my bank account for nothing, I just can't bring myself up from the comfy sofa, get dressed and walk out. So this went on for years until last week when I was on holiday and had to climb a few flights of stairs to get to a monument, and I was shocked to find myself panting only 5 minutes into climbing up those stairs. When have I become so unfit? Long story short, I discovered this fitness DVD after some quick research on amazon. £12.99 is the price on amazon. This is going to be my gateway to health, I've decided. I don't know who Davina is before this, because I don't watch the TV shows which she presents. The DVD arrived just a day before yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised. She seems quite funny, and her remarks here and there throughout the workout certainly keep me intrigued to continue watching - and of course, working out with her. I also like her two trainers, especially the guy Mark, the three of them have quite good chemistry (although Jacki doesn't really joke along as much). To me they are pleasant to watch, like friends who are joking about! The DVD has three sections, each lasting 30 minutes inclusive of warm up and cool down. I have tried all three of the workouts yesterday and today, and even though I initially thought 30 minutes wasn't going to be hard at all, I am aching ALL OVER and can barely muster energy to type this review. It is good though, in a way, because that means I was actually being worked. But I would not envy myself come tomorrow morning when I have to suffer the workout which I literally just finished! Haha. Okay so, the three sections are as follows: 1. The Pump This one involves a lot of weights and squats, in between some interval training like jogging and star jumps. I don't have any hand weights so I use 1.5L water bottles, which should do the job (I hope?) You will also need a mat with this one, because there are some floor exercises towards the end that REALLYYYYY work your tummy, bum and legs. Believe me, you'd feel it. 2. Cardio Boxing This is my favourite! I think you will enjoy this especially if you are feeling stressed out. Mark leads this section, incorporating lots of punches and kicks with some skipping and jumping. I did this for the first time yesterday night and this morning when I woke, both of my upper arms were aching a lot. Sucks to be so unfit and a beginner to workouts, but I definitely aim to do this particular workout frequently so I'd get better! 3. Core Stability To me it's not really a proper workout, more like yoga, lots of difficult balancing exercises. To be honest I couldn't do almost half of it without wobbling or collapsing on my mat, so my strategy would be to stuck with the pump or cardio boxing and only return to this after I get a little fitter. I am really hoping that I'd get healthy and fit with this DVD, and hopefully also lose some weight! So watch this space, I'd definitely share my progress as I get on with this! I would recommend this to people (like me) who never bother to get dressed and go out just to hit the gym, and want to work out in your bedroom without anybody watching or judging you. I certainly feel much more comfortable sweating, grunting and collapsing in isolation!
Davina McCall's Second Dvd, My Three Thirty Minute workouts, was the first fitness DVD I ever purchased. After a sports injury, I was left unable to run for a few months, so took this up instead. Run by Davina's Trainers Mark and Jackie, the DVD provides three great routines to keep you active and stimulate your body. Honestly? Once I'd gotten the hang of the routine, Davina *had* to be put on mute. Davina, I love you, but your voice is NOT what I want to hear when I'm exercising! Though the trainers give some helpful tips, they're the sort of tips that only need one or two mentions for you to get the hang of. As for the workouts, all three have their merits. The first two both use the occasional minute long interval session of skipping, jumping jacks or something similar to keep your heart rate up, whilst the final workout is more pilates based than HIIT based, as the other two are. The box recommends doing 3x30 minute workouts during the week to lose weight and improve fitness levels. The Pump This requires weights, even if they're just makeshift ones. I like this the most out of the three as it is the most versatile; the fitter you get, the heavier the weights can get, so long as you have access to more. Cardio Box Led by trainer Mark, this is (funnily enough) a boxing workout! It's shadow boxing, but by incorporating kicks and skipping, Davina ensures the workout is both interesting and tough. I'd say this isn't as versatile as the pump, but you can aim higher/do 'manly' push ups/pause the program and do extra reps to make it tougher. Core Stability I have awful balance, so I find this pretty tough! It's mostly pilates moves, and involves quite a lot of core work. It doesn't necessarily work up a sweat, but you will feel it the next day! I'm going to be honest - unless your fitness level is very basic, these doing 30 minutes of this 3 times a week isn't going to improve your fitness level by much. I'd say that this DVD can definitely be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle, but if this is your main source of exercise material, you're not only going to get very bored very quickly, but you'll only be doing the minimum amount of training required to be 'healthy'. Most sources recommend 30 minutes a day for fitness, so maybe doing this every other day, with some cycling or swimming on the alternate days, would be a better option.
September 06 my brother was getting married and I was to be maid of honour so with that in mind and it only being June I thought I would start actually making some use of the Davina workout I had bought. Having always been a size 8 before I had my kids I found being a size 12 strange for some time and at one point was really very unhappy about my body I know a lot of women feel like this and the mothers in here can understand what its like to find yourself with a totally different body after having children. I wasn't a fan of going to the gym, I did try it for about 6 weeks but I lacked the confidence to keep going because of the way I felt about myself so the perfect thing for me to try was a DVD workout, after trying a few "oldies" I decided they where not doing what I wanted so I gave Davina a go and Charlie Brookes both are fantastic but this is a review about the Davina workout so we will keep to that. BLOWING DUST OF MY WORKOUT GEAR~ So with my eldest in nursery at the time and my youngest having a nap I thought yes perfect time to try it out. The actual DVD starts with the intro this is Davina having a talk to you about how exercise changed her life and how she believes that by doing 30 mins 3 times a week and eating a good diet will help you lose weight and keep it off .It has the comic of Davina that you would expect and she makes it all sound like its going to be as easy as ringing a takeaway. Once you have seen this once there really is no need to watch it again. So you then have a main menu where there is an easy to follow layout you also have the option to shut Davina up and have mainly music, I would not recommend you do this until you know all 3 workouts like the back of your hand. Below the list of workouts there are extras listed these are * Davina's ten quick and easy meals * Outtakes * Big brother behind the scenes * Big brother that bikini moment (she does a whole interview in a bikini) All very easy to follow and read with a nice background and music in the background. WORKOUTS~ Pump~ This is my fave! now there's 3 people on this DVD Davina and her two trainers Jackie and Mark who are married and I must say are very nice people and they don't expect you to be like Rambo lol. So Jackie is the person talking us through the pump workout she also does the workout as she talks you through, it's nice and easy to follow and unlike a lot of workouts you can keep up without getting totally lost. Mark and Davina follow her lead. It starts with a warm up session where you stretch out all the muscles to have them nice and loose for the actual workout. When I first started the DVD I didn't feel and stretch on certain warm up exercises but after a while I started to understand more what Jackie was saying about what position you should be in and then they all worked very nice. That's the great thing with this DVD and that's, that Jackie and mark talk you through almost every detail and explain the way things should feel and not feel. So after the warm up you go straight into fat burning, Hurrah I hear you say lol these mini fat burn sessions last for about 2/3 mins and they are purely to get the heart rate up and start the fat burning for the rest of the work out, you do however do more than one fat burn session they have small sessions here and there to keep the heart rate up. I found these great fun as its easy and quick but starts vital fat burning and pumps up the heart, you will do star jumps and knee lifts it all varies really but its all fun and good to do. Than we go into the workout and this changes all the way through making sure it targets every area of the body but I find this workout to be a killer on the legs, with ballet squats and lunges that goes on for a while to the point where even Davina struggles don't be at all surprised if your legs are pretty much useless the next day. There is a section where they use small weights I don't have these but have used heavy objects and it's worked just fine but if you have weights great if not you may want to buy some but like I say I never did. After sessions of leg, arm, fat burn we go onto the floor for some good old tummy stuff!!! now I had 2 c sections with my boys so my tummy is pretty much well.....crap really to the point where the doctor said I could do with physiotherapy I find all tummy exercise a nightmare and hard to do and at first this was the same but what I did find was that just as it got to much we would stop and have a break and after a week or two I found I could keep up with Davina without finding my tummy giving in. There are also some great bum exercises in this workout (yay) work a treat and are so easy to do you wonder why they don't add more into the workout. At certain parts of the workout mark does an easy option for you to follow if you find the normal one a little hard, at first this is a great help. After this you go into a cool down session where again you stretch all the muscle out so that in theory it wont hurt the next day but if like me its all a bit of a body shock it will hurt a little the next day. Overall great easy workout to do, Davina keeps it fun by talking to you through the workout and Jackie and mark have a little banter with her as well. Cardio box~ The second workout is done by mark as it's basically a bit of kick boxing with other workout moves. Again you start with a warm up session to get your body ready for what's to come, it's all pretty much the same as the pump warm up but with longer stretches in places like your legs and arms as they get a lot of use in this workout. Again after the warm up you go into fat burning. Mark keeps the little sessions of this to all skipping, and it really does get the heart going and gets that fat burning away. We then go into the cardio box part, and I must say its great fun and good for stress as well. Lots of kicking and punches put into a routine that at first you may find a little hard to do but after a while it's great and easy to keep up with but still effective. After a good long session of cardio box we then go onto the floor to do some press ups and tummy exercise again all great to do with Jackie showing you an easy option and mark and Davina going flat out, it makes you feel good to know that if you cant keep up with mark and Davina you don't just have to sit and watch you can do the easy option with Jackie. After all the kicking, punching and skipping you have the cool down session and again its just stretching the body out so that it wont hurt to bad later on. All in all another really fun workout to do that only last 30 mins but has so much in it you feel like you just did an hours worth. Also Davina has a great skipping story in this lol you will see if you buy it. Core stability~ This workout is all about the insides because as Davina puts it, "if they don't work the outside wont work" again this workout is talked through by Jackie. I find this the hardest workout, not in terms of being puffed out because there is no part in this workout that really gets you puffed out, its hard because position is key and trying to hold certain positions is hard enough without trying to keep your body all inline. It really is difficult in parts and in other quite easy but overall very effective. This workout has that yoga/Pilates feeling to it with a twist in parts and you can really feel it working, some of the tummy exercises I felt working after just one or two where as sit ups had the same effect after say 10/20, they look easy but they really do work the insides very well. The cool down session in this workout is the best thing on the DVD in my opinion lol you lay on the floor and go right through your body and stretch out every single part of it, Jackie talks in a very calming way and you have your eyes closed and can here the low music in the background, if anything you may never get up, at one point I did 2 workouts one after the other and almost fell asleep in this cool down its that relaxing but it makes you feel very refreshed and relaxed when you do get back up a great end to 3 fantastic workouts OVERALL~ Fantastic, you only need to do it 3 times a week but I found it that fun and rewarding that I was doing it 5 times a week and when I didn't do it I actually missed it *honest to god* in the few months I did it my weight dropped by almost a stone and the plus was I didn't diet at all, in fact I ate an awful lot of rubbish and still lost a great chunk of weight I loved it because I am the worlds worst dieter and I refuse to do them so for me to eat rubbish and still lose the weight I was very impressed. Davina makes this workout very fun and at many times has you laughing or smiling, even if you have seen it loads it has the same effect. The trainers Jackie and Mark are brill, they take it at just the right pace for those of us who are a little unfit because they have the easy option it means it's a great workout for all level of fitness. I loved this workout and now I am pregnant I am missing doing it but I have just found out she has a pregnancy workout in the shops so I will be buying that. If like me you lack the confidence to go to the gym but want a good workout then I really recommend you buy this because it really does make working out seem like fun and not like a chore. Davina, Jackie and mark have done a fantastic job on this DVD. The price is normally around the £15 mark I got mine from Woolworths for £16.99 you can pick it up at play.com for £13.99 but try eBay you may save yourself a few pound.
At the moment I am on a bit of a health kick. In August I'm off to Cyprus for my brothers wedding and I am conscious of the fact that I cant remember the last time I wore a bikini (apart from in my back garden but that doesn't count as I always make sure I'm located where no one will ever see me!). I had dusted off my Wii Fit but I have already started to get a little bored of it so I started looking for other alternatives. I ordered Just Dance for the Wii (review to follow after I've had it a bit longer) as I had heard rumours that it was very energetic. However, as I was waiting for this to arrive I discovered a forgotten treasure in my DVD collection. Davina: My three thirty minute workouts. I originally purchased this DVD a couple of years ago me and my friend couldn't afford the gym and so settled on buying some fitness DVDs to do at home. She chose something along the lines of the hot pants workout and I chose the more sensible Davina workout. At the time I think I chose the Davina DVD because I didn't want a soap star telling me to exercise, showing me how they got super skinny and then in two months reading in a magazine that they went back to their original size. Plus I love Davina and knew watching her wouldn't annoy me or drive me crazy. The Davina workout became something we would do a couple of times a week (the hot pant one was just slightly weird and over the top so quickly got forgotten about). However, as with everything, interest was lost and I think the next time we had our fitness moment we could afford the gym so this DVD got completely forgotten about...until now! This DVD is (unsurprisingly) made up of three thirty minute workouts. On the title menu, you can either play them all or choose which one you want to do. These workouts are: Pump Cardio Box Core Stability The DVD starts with a small introduction from Davina which offers some good tips presented in her own unique style. Each workout has just three people involved, Davina and her two trainers Jackie and Mark. There is no studio full of skinny women in skimpy outfits which is a huge plus point. Each workout contains a warm up and cool down. You can either do a thirty minute workout or combine them to do a full hour or even an hour and a half (if you're brave). Pump This is my favourite thirty minute workout. This works your muscles and also combines this with some interval training such as jogging and moving your arms to keep your heart rate up. This section does involve using some hand weights, personally when I knew I would be using this DVD I bought a set from Argos for about £15.00. However, you could also substitute it for bottles filled with water or even sand! Music in this section includes: Get up offa that thing - James Brown, Gangster Tripping - Fatboy Slim, Right Here - SWV Cardio Box This combines cardio with some boxing moves (shocking!). This is actually quite intensive involving a lot of bouncing, skipping, kicking and punching and the first few times you do this you will definitely ache the next day (that is if you mange to get through it all, as I may well not have done the first time and may have flopped on the sofa and watched half of it lol). Music in this section includes: Put Em High - Stonebridge, Body Grove - Architechs, Not Forgotten - Leftfield Core Stability This looks at balance, poise and posture which can help you look thinner (apparently) and strengthen your body. It involves a lot of sitting on the floor and moving legs, arms and hips whilst breathing properly. It's actually quite relaxing and often makes me feel sleepy, especially if I do this after doing another workout. This is probably a really useful workout but personally I find it a little boring as it goes quite slowly, and am always a little scared I might hurt myself, particularly because I don't have a mat to work on, so out of the three workouts I do this the least. Music in this section includes: Daydream in Blue - I Monster, Only this moment - Royksopp, Child - Alex Gopher The DVD comes with a few extras, a couple of which are related to Big Brother. Davina does give ten quick and easy meals to make; they are along the lines of vegetable kebabs and brown rice. There are also a few outtakes which aren't exactly great. However, the best extra on the DVD is called mostly music. When you have become confident with doing the workouts you can change the workouts so instead of having the talking with the music in the background, you can just have the music. This is a really great feature but you really have to know what you are doing before you use this as it can be quite easy to forget what's going on. What I love about this DVD is its really easy to follow and if you feel that you cant do something easier alternatives are usually offered. This is really good as it does take a few attempts to be able to do everything the same as on the DVD, without feeling completely knackered (especially if you're a little unfit like me!). Even after you are used to the workouts they will still leave you feeling like you have had a really good workout, as the idea behind the DVD is to work you intensively for a short amount of time. Davina is amazing to watch as at times she really seems to be enjoying it and is very motivational to watch. However, at the same time she comes across as just like the rest of us complaining she's tired and asking for a banoffee pie etc! I also don't feel patronised with this DVD, I really hate DVDs that are a bit over the top with the whole 'you're doing great' motivation. The music is also really good, the music changes throughout each workout so you never end up getting bored and it always fits with what you're doing whether you're in the middle of something intensive or cooling down. There aren't too many things I dislike about this DVD. The first is only a small niggle: that you do really need an exercise mat and some hand weights which although useful and can be used separately, are an extra £20.00 plus on top of the price of the DVD. In fairness you can live without either as I still am yet to buy an exercise mat as I grin and bare it on the floor but it's not really ideal. They do also say on the DVD that you dont need the weights but personally I think that to have an intensive workout you really need them after using the DVD for awhile. The other problem is that sometimes I'm really not on the ball and I find that keeping up with what's going on can sometimes be a bit of a challenge because there's not always a warning before they change what they do if you've already done it before. However, sometimes I think this is really just down to me being a little slow as the problems I have with this DVD are very little in comparison to others (where I can stand there in amazement and wonder how I am meant to understand whats going on, never mind do it myself!). Davina: my three thirty minute workouts can be bought on Amazon for £14.00, which isn't exactly cheap. However, I really do think that buying this is a true investment and it's not something that you will bore of or hate because it's full of ridiculous skinny ladies, dressed in very little and doing moves you just can't understand. I actually keep meaning to buy some of Davina's other DVDs because I like this one so much! Definitely recommend to get ready for the summer, though remember to close your curtains and banish anyone out of the room who may laugh at you before playing the DVD!
As you've no doubt guessed from the title of this DVD, Davina and her two personal trainers Jackie and Mark Wren take us through three different workouts, which actually vary quite a bit. So you know where I'm coming from in this review, I aim to workout four times a week in the comfort of my living room and I like the 'company' of a DVD so I don't get bored doing the repetitive movements. I've been working out like this for about two and a half years as of this writing, and I would class my fitness as intermediate. I couldn't come close to running a marathon, but I generally work at the highest level on Rosemary Conley's DVDs and I like nothing better than aerobics with plenty of bouncing about and building up a good sweat! So, with that out of the way, let's look at Davina's offering! I don't watch Big Brother, and I still tend to think of Davina McCall as the girl with the wonky fringe who presented MTV Europe when I came home from school back in the mid-nineties, who now does the hair dye adverts. I got this DVD not because of Davina, but because I'd read so many good things about it. Throughout this DVD she's shameless in her silliness, playing along to the camera, so if you're one of those people who hates her, don't get this DVD! She doesn't stay quietly in the background. Although there is the menu option to have 'mostly music' to shut her up, I haven't found this useful since you also lose most of the prompts and exercise pointers. It's a good idea, but it needs to be implemented better. The first workout 'Pump' will be familiar to anyone who has done her 'Power of Three' workout (incidentally, it is the same trainers from that DVD). It follows the same format of cardio 'fat-burning' intervals of a minute each, followed by some fairly intense strengthening exercise, or toning if you prefer to call it that. It's a quite comprehensive, all-over-body workout, using hand weights and combination exercises (for example, doing squats at the same time as shoulder presses). I tend to use this workout if I haven't got a lot of time and I haven't done as much strength work in recent days as I would like because I feel like I'm also getting some cardio in. It's harder than the toning sections on Rosemary's DVDs, but not so hard as the old Cindy Crawford workouts or Davina's 'Power of Three' (but that may be because it's shorter). It feels really good once you're done - my whole body feels worked, but I'm refreshed and still have a bounce in my step rather than all my energy being sapped. I do this workout quite a lot! The second workout is 'Cardio Box', which is 20 minutes of Cardio in the form of kicks and punches and a little bit of bouncing about, followed by a 5 minute strength section (press ups, crunches, etc), then the cool down. This section requires no equipment, but it's nice to have a mat to lie on. The routines are really fun, and the music is great (although there is one badly edited part where the exercises go off the beat). I really wish this routine was a bit harder, but it doesn't really work me hard enough. I tend to use this if I've taken a couple of weeks off because of a cold or something and need something a bit easier to get me back into it. I would compare the intensity of this to the intermediate level on Rosemary's workouts. The final workout is 'Core Stability', which won't make you work up a sweat, but aims to challenge all those deep muscles that Yoga and Pilates also work. Lots of things like the plank or hold-this-bit-in-while-you-twist-that-bit. Since I tend to do quite a lot of Yoga and Pilates, I rarely do this workout. I've found it a bit unbalanced - it starts off really hard, then becomes very easy. I would actually say to anyone who has been put off Yoga or Pilates by this workout, to give them another chance! One thing I really like about this DVD is the trainers - Mark and Jackie are great at prompting and giving tips on technique, plus the cool down stretches are unusual and held for longer than I've seen on any other DVD. They come across as really competent and that gives me a lot of confidence. In summary, I would buy this DVD again just for the 'Pump' workout which I use a lot. It's handy to have the 'Cardio Box' workout since it's fun on those days when I need something not too strenuous, but I wouldn't miss the 'Core Stability' workout at all.
Over the last 6 months I have built up quite a collection of home workout DVD's and currently own all of Davina's, 2 Nell McAndrew ones, and Charlie Brooks' one. My favourite by far is Davina's Superbody workout and I go back to that one without fail at least a couple of times a week. However, every now and again you need a change! Her 3 30 Minute Workouts DVD is a great idea for anyone short on time - everyone can find the time to squeeze in 30 minutes 3 times a week into their life and even that short space of time should be enough for you to start seeing results. The DVD is split into 3 sections - Pump, Cardio Box, and Core Stability, all of which include a brief warmup and cool down. The Pump section requires a set of light hand weights to get the most out of it and sees you doing various squats, lunges, floor work etc. to work your whole body and get a more toned look. The routine is interspersed with high energy intervals which get your heart rate up to ensure you are burning fat through the whole routine. Davina has two trainers, husband and wife team Jackie and Mark Wren, and this section is lead by Jackie with Mark and Davina following. I really like workouts that involve weights so this gets the thumbs up from me, although when compared to the Super Sculpt workout on her later Superbody DVD it's not as challenging. Jackie's instruction is nice and clear here and she explains how things should feel as well as what you should be doing. The Cardio Box is probably my favourite section on this DVD and this time you are lead through it by Mark. It combines intervals again with a kickboxing routine, similar to the SuperFit routine on Superbody, or Nell McAndrew's Maximum Impact, although I have to say that I don't find it as challenging as either of those. There is also some floor work to work the abs at the end. Although I like this workout as I find punching and kicking always appeals to me, it is quite a difficult routine to follow as Mark is particularly bad here at explaining what is coming next, so the first few times you do it you are likely to be standing there confused for quite a while rather than getting the maximum out of the workout. The Core Stability section Davina describes as "working your insides" and is a Pilates style workout with lots of floor work which really works your abdominals. I really like Pilates and find that although it's not a typical 'drench yourself in sweat' workout, the results you get from it are really good and give you a much leaner, more toned figure. This is lead again by Jackie. For those who find Davina a bit annoying then this is one to avoid - I don't find her annoying at all on other DVDs but on this one her constant gurning and collapsing after each section is actually really irritating when you are just left standing there waiting for her to get up again! There is the option with this one to shut Davina up and have just music which might be just the thing you're looking for after a few times through if you can't face hearing the skipping rope story again! Although I do dig this DVD out occasionally, it's not one of my favourites. It would be perfect for anyone who is not very fit and not very motivated as the 30 minute chunks make it very manageable, but I don't really find it challenging enough to really make me feel like I've worked unless I do two of these back to back, and even then I don't feel it as much as I do with a tougher 40 minute workout. I don't feel that it's as well instructed as either Davina's Superbody or Power of 3 and I would recommend either of these over this. A good workout DVD for beginners but there are better ones out there!
I bought this dvd as part of the Davina box set, containing this and "Power Of Three". For me, fitness dvd's have the edge over going to the gym or a class becuase they are so much cheaper (once you have bought this dvd that's all you have to shell out for), you can do them in the comfort of your own home in your grotty jogging bottoms and sweatband, and at any time you choose! "My Three 30 minute workouts" features Davina and her two personal trainers, Jackie and Mark Wren. There is some friendly chatter between them all during the dvd, but there is an option to have "Mostly Music" which turns Davina off so you can just have the music! Make sure you know the routines well before doing this though..... This dvd, as the title suggests, has three 30 minute workouts. They are as follows: Pump: This is quite a high intensity routine, with weights and lots of squats! I use tins of baked beans for the weights here, but you can go without the weights if you choose (although you wont be working as hard!) Every so often there are intensive intervals - don't worry this isn't as scary as it sounds - it's just a minute or so of running on the spot or star jumps to keep your heart rate up. Cardio Box: As the name implies, this is a mix of cardio work and boxing. This is slighly less intense as it focuses more on the arms, but you will feel it the day after!! Again this one has the intervals of fat burning to keep your heart rate up and the pounds melting away. Core Stability: I was lulled into a false sense of security here, thinking that it was going to be easy. It's NOT! It involves stretches and positions to help with your poise, posture and balance, but for a first timer with weak muscles they really are a challenge! It also focuses on breathing correctly during the stretches, which is really hard to do when you think your arms are going to give way underneath you!! I think as these routines are only 30 minutes long it makes it easier and more appealing to say, fit in before work or in the evening. 30 minutes sounds so much better than an hour when you have a busy life! There are several extras on the dvd also, which are: Davina's Ten Quick and Easy Meals Outtakes Big Brother: Behind The Scenes Big Brother: That Bikini Moment Now personally, I hate Big Brother with a passion and have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to put extras relating to it on this fitness dvd. The quick and easy meals are handy for ideas, and the outtakes are funny, but it would have been nice to have more fitness related extras rather than stuff on Big Brother. My only other gripe is that during the dvd, they dont give you advance warning of say, changing legs or countdown how many more reps to go. You are taken by surprise when they just "move on"!! But I'm sure this will become less of an issue once I have used it a lot more times. Overall though I think this is a great dvd to help get you fit, the exercises are not boring and repetitive like some dvd's I have tried and you can feel they are working your body hard!!
I bought this workout DVD in May 2008 and have been using it on and off since then. There are three 30 minute workouts for you to choose from: Pump - This one is to help build muscle strength. It is mainly squats and lunges combined with arm exercises using weights. You can do all of the exercises without weights to begin with and incorporate them as your strength increases. Every so often there are short bursts of interval training (about 1 minute) to keep your heart rate up, usually jogging on the spot or star jumps. This section also has a small bums and tums section towards the end. I enjoy doing this one as you really feel like you have worked hard by the end of it. Cardio Box - Combines boxing moves with fat burning exercise. Some of the boxing is done on the spot and at other times whilst bouncing backwards and forwards. The moves are easy to pick up and fun to do. The fat burning comes in the form of skipping on the spot (no rope required). This workout also involves press ups, and a few leg exercises. Core Stability - To improve posture and balance. The basis of this is yoga positions with lots of emphasis on controlled breathing. You could be forgiven for thinking that this part of the DVD would be gentle and relaxing but it is actually the hardest section of the three. Co-ordinating the breathing whilst trying to main the postures can be challenging at times. Because each section is only 30 minutes you can easily do each one once a week as suggested. Davina works out with her two Personal trainers Jackie and Mark Wren who lead the sessions. Where possible they show you an easy and a hard version of the exercises so that you can still join in if you are a beginner or not quite up to the hard level yet. I found this really helpful in the beginning. Whilst the banter between Davina, Jackie and Mark is funny the first couple of times you do it it soon gets old and this is where one of the DVDs special features comes in. They give you the option to pick mostly music so you can turn the talking down and the music up. This does come in handy but I would only suggest doing this after you have familiarised yourself with all the routines. The music is fun and can help you to keep in time. There are other special features available but they are not really relevant to the fitness side of things and centre mostly on Big Brother behind the scenes. Overall I would say this is a great workout DVD if your fitness levels are between beginner and intermediate. That said there are a couple of minor changes I would make. The warm up and cool downs seem a little quick. I know this is mainly due to time constraints but stretching out at the end of a workout is important especially if you don't want to feel too sore the next day, so it would be better if that was longer. I also prefer longer sessions of cardio vascular exercise, this is not everybody's cup of tea, but I would find 5 minute interval training more useful that the one minute you get here. I bought this DVD with a view to improving my fitness rather than losing weight and it seems to have done the trick! I feel better in general and it has definitely helped me tone up. Its good value for the money you pay and not too repetitive. This DVD is perfect if you lead a busy life but still want to keep fit.
Okay, so i'll admit, I was no way in hell going to join a gym! For one, the cost of it is just not worth it, and two, I just wouldn't be bothered to drive to the gym at the end of the day after a hard days work....so I looked for alternative methods. I came across a double box set from Davina, which included this DVD and her Power of 3 workout DVD. I prefferred this one, which is why i'm writing a review on it. It's basically three 30 minute workouts you can do, before you go to work, or after you've been to work. It's something you can just whack on, get on with it, and then get on with the rest of your day! Each section has a warm up and cool down, which are all different, but much needed. The three workouts include: The Pump Cardio Box Core Stability All 3 are really useful, but I would say that core stability is not much of a strenuous workout...it's more for the yoga fans out there. The Pump: My favourite! It's very hard to start with...definately not for a beginner! Or, if you are a beginner...follow the less advanced moves by Jacki, one of davinas personal trainers who feature in the dvd. This section is just full of squats (make sure you've got some weights for this by the way!)....these squats HURT! I was feeling the burn for 3 days!!! You also do some kicks, lunges, weights and regular intervals, which they call 'fat burning' to get your heart rate up. The reps are good, not too many, not too little. Cardio Box: This is a fun one and is led by Mark (Davinas second personal trainer) and is basically alot of jumping about, kicking, punching and skipping. Keeps your heart rate going quite abit, and you will work up a sweat, but it's really really fun! You will be knackered at the end of this one as you're constantly working the arms and the legs. Core Stability: Like I said before, it's more for the yoga fans, as it's more about balance and control, and breathing. Still quite useful though! Some of these balancing moves are quite hard, and you've really got to hold your own weight, which can be quite tough at times, but all in all, it's useful for the other workouts believe it or not. This dvd does work though! I lost 16 pounds in 5 weeks with this dvd. I did the workouts 3 times a week, and also undertook a healthy eating regime, not a faddy diet, just my own healthy eating regime which allowed me to intake 1500 calories per day and up to 40g of fat per day. It has really worked! The weight has stayed off, I eat normally now, but still do workouts twice a week. The only downside to this is that after a while, you will become quite bored of doing the same things over and over. I've now moved onto a more advanced home workout called 'Turbo Jam', which is american and very very fast paced! But really, this Davina workout is great. It's with her 2 personal, proffesional trainers....so none of these ex-popstars or soapstars! You can tell they r real trainers because they r quite well built and very toned!

Cardio Box This is brilliant and loads of fun to do, as it combines intensive fat burning exercise with some boxing moves. Core Stability This is all about poise, posture, balance and can have a huge impact on your overall health and wellbeing. Being fit and healthy has given me more energy then I could have ever imagined and I honestly still believe that working out three times a week and eating three healthy meals a day is the best way to get fit and lose weight - it's that simple! Plus, as a special treat, there is an option to shut me up and pump up the tunes - just choose the ' Mostly Music ' option at the start and crank it up! So go for it and make exercise part of your life. It's done the trick for me!
