If you've read my previous reviews, you'll probably have noticed that I do a lot of outdoor hiking and walking with my dogs, and I have reviewed various items of outdoor clothing and walking boots that all need to be waterproof. Whilst many of the items were waterproof when brand new, what I have found over time is that that water proofness does begin to wane, and hence, you need to reapply some sort of re-proofer in order to maintain that water proofness of the material. This is where the Grangers 2 in 1 Cleaner and Proofer comes in for me.
Over the years I have tried various brands of water proofers with varying degrees of success. What I have found is that the cheaper varieties don't seem to last more than a couple of washes. So I was always on the look out for a better product, but didn't really want to spend a fortune to get it.
Someone told me about this Grangers product and I eventually bought a bottle from Amazon for just over £8. For that I got a 300 ml bottle. Now the added bonus of this is that as well as being a water proofer, it is also a cleaning product as well.
One of the main attractions of this product is that it is relatively easy to apply. Other products that I have used in the past have meant that I needed to spray the fabric with the product and then leave it to dry. Ok to do, but it did tend to get messy, and there was always that guessing game of did I apply enough to everywhere it was needed? With this Grangers product, you actually mix it into your washing machine. A 300 ml bottle is meant to last 10 washes (so it claims) and the idea and guideline is that you mix 3 capfuls to a machine load of washing. Note I say 'a machine load' because this means that you can do a whole lot of outdoor items all at once rather than trying to spray coat individual items as I used to do before with other proofers.
You then put the machine on a normal wash program, where the Grangers will both clean your items of clothing and waterproof them at the same time. Once finished, take the items out of the machine and let them dry thoroughly.
The first time I used this, I wasn't sure how effective it had been because you can't actually see it on the fabric. The best way to check it is to sprinkle or spray some water onto the fabric and see what happens. Normally, a non waterproofed fabric would just soak up the water, but on a waterproofed fabric, the water should form globules or droplets and just sit on the surface of the fabric and not be absorbed. The first time I used this product on an old jacket and then did the water test, the water was sort of partially absorbed by the fabric. But after I repeated the washing process a second time, the test showed that the fabric was fully waterproofed. On other jackets that were perhaps not so worn, I've found that just the one time through the wash process had managed to re-apply that waterproofing sufficiently.
One point worth noting is that the material that you are intending to waterproof with this product needs to have been previously waterproofed in order for this to work. Hence, you cannot take your favourite sweater and suddenly waterproof it by washing it with this product. I think it will have something to do with the way the waterproof material is constructed, because you often find that outdoor fabrics tend to be a Gortex based construction which is specifically designed to be waterproof. Hence, applying this to that Gortex fabric will re-proof the fabric against water absorption.
So far, my bottle has lasted 9 washes of reproofing my outdoor clothing, and I reckon that I've probably got another 2 washes at least left in the bottle. So their guideline of 10 washes seems to be fairly accurate. In addition, it also seems to have longevity once applied to your outdoor wear by continuing to provide that waterproof protection for some time.
In summary, this is a really easy product to use and apply - no fuss and no mess - and I have managed to prove that it does really work. So for the price and ease of application, you just can't go wrong.

Once the colder wetter weather kicks in its time to reproof our last years outdoor clothing, so that it will keep water out during bad weather when we are out and about. A product that we use to great effect with the absolute minimum of effort and fuss is Granger's 2 in 1 Cleaner & Proofer.
Granger's 2 in 1 Cleaner & Proofer is something we buy that is so simple to use its near enough idiot proof. Its something that you can use to both wash and protect your outdoor clothing to bring it back up to full water repellent standards, thus helping to keep the weather out.
We usually pay £7.99 for a 300ml bottle of Granger's 2 in 1 Cleaner & Proofer but it can be as much as £1 more in some stores and anything less is a bargain. Its works really well and can breathe new life into tired outdoor waterproof jackets and trousers. It means items that were once waterproof and are now showing their age and not repelling water as well as they once did can be saved.
To use the Granger's 2 in 1 Cleaner & Proofer you may want to pre-wash your outdoor clothing if its previously been washed in washing powder in order to get best results. We do this at the start of the season anyway, making sure that there is no washing powder residue in our machine or on our clothing. This way we can be sure of good results first time around.
Once we have done this general clean we add 3 capfuls of the product to a load of outdoor clothing including jackets and trousers plus hats. We wash those on a warm 30 / 40 degree hand wash cycle. Once this cycle has finished the clothing is ready for the final stage of re-proofing.
If you have a tumble dryer, you just need to dry your clothing on a 50 degree drying cycle, until your full load is 100% dry. Then to make sure the re-proofing action is fully activated, add an extra 15 minutes in the dryer. This will ensure that your waterproof/ water repellent clothing is functioning almost as it did when new.
If you don't have a tumble dryer you can place your clothing items on a warm radiator to dry out and then leave it for a bit longer once dry, to ensure the waterproofing on the clothing is as good as it can be. You can do a quick test with a household spray gun filled with clean water, to check if the water is now beading on the clothing and running off.
If water beading is not present to a great degree then the clothing may need another treatment to fully restore it to its former glory. Once we have completed the washing and drying cycle as above, for future washes we don't bother with an initial pre wash and just wash using the Granger's 2 in 1 Cleaner & Proofer straight off.
We have found that Granger's 2 in 1 Cleaner & Proofer is a simple but effective way to keep our outdoor clothing functioning as it should. Its much cheaper than buying new jackets every winter and means that we can keep an eye on how the water repellent qualities are and do a top up wash as and when needed.
Just 1 bottle of the product can be enough for up to 10 washes, which works out at roughly 80 per wash cycle. This is so much cheaper than it would be to get our clothing professionally re-proofed and as its so easy to do I have to give the product a full 5 star rating, as it does what it should when it should.
My family and I are lucky enough to live in the countryside and we try to get outside on a big walk together on the moors at least every weekend and some evenings. It's a nice way to get away from the house, the TV, the kids toys and back together all talking whilst getting some fresh air and exercise. The only real downside to this is the UK weather, and the kids ability to attract mud and puddles. To keep all of our outdoor clothes waterproof and to to top up the waterproof layer already on the clothes, I tried Grangers 2 in 1 Cleaner and Proofer.
A 300ml black plastic bottle of this liquid cost me £8 at an outdoor equipment shop, and is meant to last for 10 washloads - to use it, you see, you add a capful to the washing machine load of clothes that need re-waterproofing and cleaning.
The product cleans outdoor clothes by removing dirt and muddy stains, and it works best on clothing that's already waterproof - normal washing powder can't always penetrate the waterproof layer to clean them properly.
The liquid also re-waterproofs items of clothing by re-coating their waterproof layer, but if you use them on non-waterproof items it won't make them waterproof. It just improves already waterproofed items.
I actually found that the product lasted me 12 washes, which I thought was good value as it worked well on my family's waterproof trousers, jackets and anoraks to keep their waterproof ability high and topped up. My kids can now get the outsides of their clothes as wet and as dirty as they like as this product is really good at also getting the ingrained dirt out of clothes as it waterproofs.
This product was purchased in order for me to able to effectively and easily clean the outdoor equipment I and my family used on our long winter treks through the countryside and the various activities I get up to in my free time. Its intended to be used in the washing machine for outdoors items such as jackets, waterproof trousers and such like. It can be used on anything and wont do damage if you use it to clean non suggested clothing.
This 300ml bottle costs between £7.50 and £9 at present and the one bit of value is that it lasts several washes. The bottle says 10 but I got at least 15 washes with decently filled washloads out of it and it still performed well cleaning even the toughest bits of dried in mud from my trousers and jackets.
Its a 2 in 1 device -
Cleans - As it says it removes tough dirt stains and other marks from items of clothing and works better with waterproof materials. It does clean normal clothes too but don't run the risk of it ruining your outfits.
Waterproofs - The product also adds a waterproof coating to items. It basically serves to reinforce the existing waterproofing and wont have any effect on items that are not waterproof.
I have found after several bottles of this and using it on many items of clothing that it has helped preserve the life of my clothes. Not only do they look cleaner but they seems more fit for purpose and generally more durable through using this!
