I started buying the reduced version of beans when my 10 month old son began eating solids a few months ago. I try not to give this too often as even though it has reduced salt and sugar it still contains a fair amount of salt and sugar where a baby is concerned. I realised that my daughter who once ate everything I put in front of her was now a fussy toddler who just wanted fish fingers and beans. So it seemed wise to move them both onto a lower salt and sugar version. I was concerned that my daughter would not like the beans but she hasn''t noticed a difference and still loves them. I have to say I don''t find them as tasty as the full sugar /salt version but this is to be expected. I don''t particularly like salty food and rarely add any to my own food but I just find them a bit bland now and am more likely to jazz them up with some grated cheese, ham, and Worcestershire sauce thus adding to the salt content of my meal. They look the same as the original version and have the same consistency and colour. I use these beans generally when I am short of time and feel they are a reasonably healthy option for my children. I also add these to the sausage casseroles I make. I combine the beans with tinned tomatoes and it makes a quick and easy sauce to add to the casserole. I will continue to buy these beans until my children are a bit older and able to handle more salt. If it was just me and my husband I would revert back to the original version.
As part of my healthier 2010 I decided I may as well opt for these beans in the supermarket rather than the regular Heinz version. I don't eat baked beans often but when I do I'm quite picky about them, and usually only Heinz will do. I hate the supermarket own brands and Branston because they just taste weird to me! So reduced salt and sugar Heinz it was.
I had intended to use them in a casserole, but in the end I made oven wraps with them to use up leftovers (get a wrap, carefully pour some beans down it, add grated cheese on top of the beans, add mushrooms or other vegetables, wrap up, cut in half, stick in the oven for 10 minutes). I have to say that I wasn't on full alert with my senses because I trusted Heinz and thought they would taste similar, if not identical, to their regular beans.
The first difference I noticed was the very watery sauce. I don't like too much sauce with beans as I usually have them with toast and it makes the bread soggy. So I ended up pouring all this watery sauce away, which was kind of a waste and put me off the beans a bit. I may be imagining this but they seemed paler, more orange and less appetising than Heinz's usual beans.
I cooked them in the oven for the recommended time, and they were cooked through and steaming. They tasted quite funny as well - more artificial, and with a slightly odd (but mild) chemically aftertaste which I didn't like at all. At first I thought the wrap was to blame, but I have since tried the beans separately and cooked them in the microwave (as I normally do) and I still don't like them.
I've done a bit of research to see exactly how much salt and sugar you save compared to normal Heinz beans, and the sodium at least is around 50% less, so this may be one for you if you're watching your salt intake. Personally, I won't be buying these again as they taste worse than Branston to me, and that's saying something! This is quite unusual for me as I eat low salt products all the time (and I never add salt to my cooking or food), so maybe it's the reduced sugar or alternative ingredients they've stuck in there to make up for it.
I'm disappointed with these as I was expecting them to be up to Heinz's usual standard, but sadly they fail to compete with even the poor tasting budget brands, let alone similar-brand competitors.
i was looking for more ways to become a little healthier so started taking my lunch into work rather than eating out every day. so that gave me the problem of what i could take in. i was having a look at the beans section in morrisons and noticed reduced sugar and salt heinz beanz. when everybody else is moaning about low fat/salt/sugar foods and how they dont taste as nice i honestly dont taste much of a difference and these beanz were no exception.
so now these beanz are my first choice. i dont think most people can afford to be eating as much salt and sugar as they do these days so whenever i see the same product only with less salt/sugar/fat then i will get it! and the people who say they taste bland and "not the same" i honestly do think its all in their minds!
so i say good on the companys who bring out low salt/sugar/fat versions of their product! i for one will buy them and i think everybody should follow :))
I have been using these beans for sometime now and now can no longer eat the normal ones as they taste too sweet. I guess its like taking sugar in your tea...... Admittedly when you first eat them you do notice the different but after a time you get used to them.
Even my children eat them to without any quibbles.
My only bugbear with them is that they seem to be very watery. i am not sure if they actually put less beans in, but when you open a tin of the lower s & s ones its half liquid and all the beans are at the bottom. maybe its because the sauce isn;t as thick and therefore does not suspend the beans aswell, but why would this happen?
All i say is give them a go, its a good way of reducing your sugar and salt intake and a very healthy snack.

On a recent online shopping order I saw that Heinz beans were on a buy one get one free offer so ordered 2 multipacks of Heinz beans; what I hadn't noticed is that I was ordering the reduced sugar and salt version as opposed to the full salt & sugar variety I normally order. When not on offer the price is the same for both versions.
I hadn't realised that beans were overly full of sugar and salt and believed them to be a quite healthy accompaniment to my childrens meals. Looking at the nutritional information on the back of the two versions the reduced sugar & salt version does contain slightly less calories - 137 per half can compared to 151 in the usual version. They have reduced the sugar by 30% and the salt by 25% although I notice the normal version also makes a point of highlighting the product is low in sugar already.
Tastewise I really can tell the difference between the two, the reduced sugar & salt version taste very bland and the children also asked what was wrong with the beans - and they didn't know I was using a new version. As I had 8 cans to get through I have been adding a little salt to them - which defeats the object somewhat! I think if it was important to keep a very close eye on sugar & salt intake they might be worth buying but I will be making sure I order the normal ones next time.
I love baked beans, and healthy as they already are, there was definitely scope to remove some sugar and salt. This really shows that Heinz is making an effort for its customers, which is appreciated. It's not much more effort to select a different tin of beans after all.
The packaging remains almost identical, in its distinctive tin, which was a good move as not to bewilder shoppers. It also reminds the customer that this is the real deal and that they are buying from a trusted brand.
The added health benefits of beans are certainly a good thing, there really is no difference in taste in my opinion, and like for like this is obviously the better choice. I've totally swapped my buying habits now for these because there is just nothing noticably different about them.
The price is identical in my supermarket, which means I will be buying these versatile beauties from now on to save both my health and my pennies! Just try them once, with bread or a jacket potato, i'm sure you won't notice the difference!
It's great to see Heinz making a difference in their products, and it would be great to see them making even more changes to other products of theres as this has definitely been a success. It does beg the question though, that if it's this easy to make something lower fat, and there is no cost or flavour difference, why don't they just reduce the content of the product rather than creating a new one?
Heinz have been making baked beans ever since 1886 and have always been a good addition to most meals, cheap so ideal for families and also full of fibre. All in all the perfect food stuff most people might say. Certainly goes well with everything from baked potatoes, toast, sausages. A students favourite, heinz have been the best quality beans available for any quick and ready meal situation.
To go alongside the publicity from various health organisations, they have now started producing a version which has upto 50% less fat and salt, but surprisingly also less sugar. I didn't even know that beans had so much sugar in them in the first place to be honest but as part of trying to eat more healthily and "do the right thing" I thought I would try the beans out.
I was a bit disappointed to be honest. The sauce is much thinner than the "regular" beans and the colours of the beans themselves seem a bit anaemic.
Tastewise, the thinner sauce really doesnt do much. I had to pep it up with some tobasco sauce and a bit of ketchup (reduced sugar ketchup of course!) which made it taste slightly better.
On toast or with sausages etc it really does make a massive difference to taste. I think I'd rather have the original beans but change the sausage to low fat or have wholemeal bread. At least that way I can still have full flavour from my meal. With these beans, I'm losing the flavour of whatever they're with because they have a very "artificial" taste which overpowers the other foods.
