      No disappointment

Among somewhat less exotic offerings, I was lucky enough to get sent this item to try and keep, by Amazon. It is currently priced at £78. Solid state drives, which, in case you were wondering, unlike traditional hard drives have no moving mechanical parts, have been decreasing in price of late and I was keen to try this one out. I have had this installed and working in my laptop for a while now, and as I was hoping, it has provided a considerable speed improvement. Other than speed, adding an SSD drive should, in theory, also make your laptop last longer on a single charge and it will also make your laptop run cooler and quieter. All in all then it is one of the most beneficial upgrades you can make, and this particular drive has certainly proved to be a good way of improving my computer's performance.

The actual hardware installation, completed with a small phillip's screwdriver and the aid of my computer savvy husband and I have to admit, was relatively simple, just a question of taking out the old hard drive and replacing with this one; note you will need a mounting kit to install this in a desktop PC. You can also purchase an installation DVD guide and additional cables with this drive, should you require them.

All SSD drives are not created equally, this has a read and write speed of 450MB/s, which is relatively quick - some faster drives do exist but they may have slower read speeds, for example the Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5 inch SATA Solid State Drive which I have on another machine has a 530MB/s read speed, but only 130MB/s write). It really does depend on what you want to do with the drive.

In use I do find boot up speed much quicker and although it is a bit strange at first not to hear the whirring of the hard drive as you will be used to, as billed I have found that my battery lasts a lot longer and the system runs cooler. I have had no issues thus far at all with this drive in terms of memory failure, after install I have practically forgotten it is there.

The drive is a slim 2.5" model, and is only 7mm high, mine came in a blister pack with multi-lingual clear instructions. the pack also contains also a 2mm piece of self adhesive plastic that you can stick to it to make it a standard 9mm height so that it will fit everywhere a standard 2.5" drive would.

Overall I would wholly recommend to anyone confident enough to be able to perform this kind of upgrade on their computer; we plan to add this same drive to a PC we own as well, so pleased have we been with this item. I have found this solidstate drive to be much better all round than the samsung I had already purchased, since installation it has been trouble free and reliable - it's a good buy in my opinion.
