      Disadvantages

A truly natural pure soap product.

This soap (and varieties of) is one of my favourite products ever. 100% natural and with a myriad of uses, this has replaced washing powder, bubble baths, floor wash, shampoo and dog shampoo in my house. I truly cannot recommend it enough. The soap seems expensive to buy initially but it is very concentrated and contains no nasties at all so is safe to use and especially good for children. One bottle lasts a very long time and there are smaller bottles available should you wish to try it out first.

I use the almond one for my skin and hair and other varieties such as peppermint, eucalyptus and rose for other things. More about this below.

Emanuel H. Bronner (1908-1997) was the creator of Dr. Bronner's castile soap, a liquid natural soap which is well known for the huge amount of lather produced and the reams of tiny text on its labels (this text ranges from philosophical text to religious quotes). Dr Bronner's parents were killed in the Holocaust, and it is worth reading about his life. Throughout his life he promoted a belief in the "goodness and unity of humanity" and this transferred to his products.

      INGREDIENTS:

Even LUSH and The Body Shop insist on using Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and other chemicals in their supposed "natural" products and it is hard to find any kind of body care product that doesn't. Dr Bronner's soaps do not contain toxic chemicals at all. The liquid soaps and so-called "magic soaps" are 100% castile based with a high foam capacity due to the coconut oil within. This is a simple soap that will not harm you, your home or our water systems. To the castile base, pure essential oils are added along with organic oils ( hemp, almond, olive and jojoba) which create a moisturising lather.

INGREDIENTS: Water, Saponified Organic Coconut, Organic Olive and Almond Oils (w/Retained Glycerin), Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Essential Oils, Citric Acid, Vitamin E.

That is all. The soap is vegan, not tested on animals and is planet and body kind. It is biodegradable, 100% vegetable based and made with certified fair trade ingredients.

      USES:

This famous soap alongside the "magic soap" is said to have 18 uses in one product.

      Bathing:

It can be used as a shower gel, face wash, body wash product as well as a shampoo. If you have very long hair like me and you use this as a shampoo then I would advise a conditioner afterwards as this soap is very deep cleansing. Particularly wonderful for children, it contains none of the horrible chemicals found in Johnson's and generic baby products, and it does not sting the eyes. My daughter also loves the ton of bubbles that we get from very little soap.

      Laundry:

I use it in my washing machine as a liquid detergent, 20-30ml is more than enough. Doing a hot cycle with washing soda every ten washes cleans out the machine as liquid soaps can cause build up. I also add bicarb to the wash tray with every wash load which enhances the action of the soap.

      For pets:

Safe for pets although I avoid the essential oil ones with peppermint and lavender. The almond one is great for pets as is the baby one. I have only done this once after an unfortunate fox poo incident but it was very effective (the dog was not amused).

      Tooth brushing:

Just one or two drops of the soap on a wet toothbrush can be used as a non fluoride toothpaste. The peppermint one is good for this. Just brush as you normally would and do not use to much or it will look like you have rabies :) This has no abrasives so is good for sensitive teeth.

      Mouthwash:

A drop or two in water can be used as a mouthwash. Again peppermint is good for this

      Household cleaning:

Alongside laundry, I use Dr Bronner's for floor washing, window washing and cleaning the bath and tiles. The eucalyptus one is great for cleaning and smells very nice. You only need a little as it will lather up fast.
Because it is non toxic it can be used on surfaces that pets use and it does not need to be washed or rinsed off. The neat soap can be applied to clothing to remove stains, it can be used to spray plants to kill insects (I do not do this though) and it can be used in place of any household cleaner including washing up liquid. I use a ratio of about 5ml of soap to a bucket/sink of water.

      STORAGE:

Store as you would a shampoo but be aware that if your house is very cold then the soap can become cloudy looking. This does not affect it and it can still be used but it will need to be warmed up a bit first. The cloudiness is due to the purity of the product and the fact that it is so concentrated.

      PACKAGING:

100% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) Cylinder Bottles and Paper Labels
Simple, Ecological Formulations Based on Old-World Quality and Expertise

Dr Bronner's liquid soap is available in Peppermint, Lavender, Almond, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Rose and Citrus Orange varieties via Amazon and online shops. There are conditioners, shaving gels and bar soaps also available from this company.

      PRICES:

946ml costs £11.04 on Amazon and there are a variety of sizes available if you want to try it out before buying a huge bottle. The big 946ml bottle lasts me several months and I use it for everything!

The Best Multi-Use Soap This Side of Eco

Quite simply, this is the most useable, eco-friendly and lovely smelling bath/shower product I've ever come across! Avaliable in large and small bottles and at a lower price tag than many other similar products, my favourite thing about Dr Bronner's soap is that it can be used in so many ways. You may think of soap as having a drying effect on the skin and not going very far- this was my concern, but I found that with even just a tiny amount it lathers up better than most regular products I have used in the past. What I really like about it is that I no longer need to think about using separate products (and therefore more packaging and things running out at different times)- I use this both in the shower and as a shampoo. Maybe the most useful thing about it is that it rinses out immediately (yes, really!) even from the hair, which is great if you don't want to spend ages rinsing away soapy bubbles.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Go green, and stay healthy!

On a quest to create a healthier environment for my family I started to experiment with different natural skincare products, while on a web search I came across Dr. Bronner pure castile soaps. This soap is now my sole companion into the shower and leaves you so fresh and squeaky clean it makes you wonder how you ever did without it, and best yet, there are NO baddies! No sulfates, parabens or preservatives here!

The Castile soaps which are one of Dr. Bronners trademarks are a ALL-in-one type which you can use as a shampoo, body wash, carpet cleaner, and pet shampoo, you name it, and this guy does it. While it seems a bit strange at first when you realize that it works as good as any other detergent you have in your cupboard, you are soon sold on it.

          About:

Dr. Bronner is a American brand that has a whole range of skin care, having researched several natural skin care products, I have found this one to be the best for quality ingredients without a hefty price tag. There are no surprises to be had here, all the ingredients are above board and surprisingly simple.

          Usage:

          For Body

The Almond Soap is the one I bought as the smell would be suitable to the whole family, it is a rather sweet smell that reminds you of marzipan, but it fades to a subtle warm scent, after showering so the hubby doesn't mind, and actually really likes it! It is very runny in consistency so I would recommend using bath mittens or a loofah otherwise you will waste the soap, only a very small amount is needed as this soap lathers up storm, and you will have no complaints there! Your skin is left squeaky clean and smells divine.

          For Hair

I have another natural organic shampoo from Avalon which doesn't lather very well, so I find it rather hard to use, so Dr. Bronners castile soap was nice as it worked up a lather very easily and got all the strands soapy. My only complaint is that because it doesn't have any creams or softeners your hair gets very tangled and dry. The dryness does disappear after a few washes as your hair gets used to it. If you have short hair this isn't a problem, but if you have long hair then be prepared for some tangles. A natural hair oil spray like, almond oil and water mixed in a spray can, is useful as a stay in conditioner. After washing lightly spray your hair this makes it easier to brush.

          For Pets:

What can I say here? It works great and is cheaper then your chemical packed pet shampoos that make your skin itch! I would recommend the tea tree oil one as it is a natural flea and lice deterrent, just make sure you don't get it near the animals eyes.

          For Household use:

This works great as a floor cleaner, hand soap, and also diluted as a spray cleaner, it gets out the dirt and leaves the room smelling sweet. I haven't tried it as toothpaste or as a laundry cleaner although I am told it works for that as well.

          Conclusion:

A great investment that has terrific value for money and lasts a long time, even in my family of three, highly recommended if you are looking for alternative cleaning and body soaps , and your skin will thank you for it! It is also fairly economical as a bottle weighing 250 ml on Amazon will only set you back 4.99 pounds, and it last a century! I am taking away one star, because of the initial dryness it causes your hair, and the fact that it is very runny and therefore unless you use a loofah allot gets wasted.
