“ Brand: The Fabulous Bakin' Boys „
I brought a box of these limited edition White Chocolate Cup Cakes when they was on special offer in Tesco on Xmas Eve, I think it was 2 boxes for £2.00 and because I'd got to buy cakes anyway I got a box of these and a box of the chocolate ones.
Their proper name is Winter White Cup Cakes and they are a vanilla sponge cake with white chocolate icing. The icing looks mega thick but it's not really and it's not very Fabulous to put extra icing down the sides of the cake to make it look like thick chocolate. They lose one star for that bit of snide!
They taste nice, I'm not into white chocolate but this is very tasty. It's weird but because the white chocolate is not very good quality on the cup cakes I like it better than I would if it was brill creamy proper white chocolate. With these cup cakes there's quite a strong icing flavour that mixes with the chocolate and that makes it lovely and sweet with a delish sugary taste.
The sponge is yummy, it's got a lovely light texture and melts in your mouth as you eat it. The vanilla flavour in the sponge goes wicked with the white chocolate icing and the whole cake has got a mega sweet taste. I love how if you eat the icing seperate to the sponge and then eat a bit of them together they taste completely different, it's like a different cake!!!
The white chocolate icing is lovely and soft, like I said it's a lot thinner than it looks but that's a good thing because if it was thicker the cake would deffo be too sickly. If you've had Fabulous Baking Boys Cup Cakes before you'll know they're all quite sweet, these are deffo the sweetest variety I've tried but they're delish at the same time.
I think these will be around for a bit yet even though they're limited edition, sometimes the Baking Boys bring limited edition cakes out again and again anyway so you're bound to see them another time..... even if it's Xmas 2010!!!
I've been a fan of 'The Fabulous Bakin' Boys' since they started baking! I love their little sponges covered in milk chocolate plus their flajack fingers. So I was delighted when I found these in Sainsbury's today looking for something for my son to take to his school christmas party.
These are limited edition 'Winter White Cupcakes', there are 6 in a box and are described as 'A moist vanilla flavoured sponge with a white chocolate flavoured topping'
As these are a limited edition for christmas, the box is very christmassy. It is mainly a lovely deep red colour and covered in white snowflakes and holly berries. Each of the six cupcakes inside are individually wrapped in plastic film, making them very lunchbox friendly.
Price and Availibilty
I hadn't seen these before today, but I assume they are available in all supermarkets. They were £1.25 in Sainsbury's (price correct as of 15th Dec 09) but were on a Buy One Get One Free offer....so I took full advantage and bought 4 boxes! £2.50 seems a steal for 24 individual cupcakes.
Contains: Gluten, Milk products, Egg & Soya. Packed in Nut Free Zone.
No artificial colours or flavours.
Freshly baked in the heart of Oxfordshire ( I liked this)
146 Calories / 12.4g Sugar (14% daily amount!) / 7.5g Fat (11%)
Opening the box and taking out the cupcakes, first thing I noticed is that they are quite small. When I think of cupcake I think of a generously sized individual cake, these are like fairy cakes....maybe I'm just being greedy. They don't look too exciting either, it really is just a pale yellow sponge with a white topping, but as they say 'proof is in the eating'. They taste quite pleasant, a nice moist sponge with a thick white chocolate top (perhaps too thick for some people, I'd say the topping makes up 1/3 of the overall cake - I feel the cake to topping ratio is not quite right, there needs to be more cake really!)
They are quite sweet, and the topping might be a little sickly for some people (but I love white chocolate and it is often sweeter than milk chocolate anyway) so perhaps in hindsight, a small cake is just enough.
The jury's still out on this one, I liked the cake, but it was nothing special - I kind of expected more and was excited when I first spotted them as I love trying new things. I guess I feel slightly let down - the enticing christmassy box and the idea of 'Winter White Cupcakes' really drew me in and promised more than I believe I got.
All in all, worth trying if on they're on offer. But nothing special if they're not.
Happy eating! x
