“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Snacks „
Chocolate peanuts are something in life that just hit the spot, they are like the ultimate snack for me! They give you that sweet and savoury hit in one, but it seems I don't buy them that often (probably because I just eat the whole bag in one sitting!) so whilst I was in Tesco's trolling the confectionary isle I noticed my old time favourites calling my name and knew I had to pop them in my trolley for an evening snack in front of the telly! Bliss!
~ Product and availability ~
Tesco's milk choc American peanuts are only available from Tesco's however other stores do sell their own brands as well. They are only currently available to buy in one sized bag which is 200g. They cost 86p a bag which isn't too bad considering how much you pay for a bag of peanuts alone these days! Compared with other brands they are about the same with Asda's being 86p and Sainsbury's being 98p for a bag that is marginally larger.
~ Packaging ~
The packaging Dooyoo is showing is different from the bag I am holding at the moment, but I looked on Tesco's website and they too are showing the same one as Dooyoo so they must be in the process of updating their images so I will go from what I have in my hand. The bag I have is made from the usual plastic type wrapper which is coloured a bright blue. On the front of the bag is a huge chocolate peanut, bitten into with the peanut sticking out of the top, surrounding this are lots of little chocolate peanuts. Printed on the peanut are the words 'milk chocolate American peanuts' in blue writing and above this is the Tesco logo. In the corner of the bag you will find an easy-to-read at a glance nutritional chart. On the back of the packet you will find the product description; milk chocolate coated peanuts, allergy advice, full nutritional information, ingredients list and storage instructions. The top of the bag is serrated for easy opening.
~ Appearance, taste, texture and smell ~
Opening the bag of chocolate peanuts you are greeted with lots of little oval shaped brown, shiny balls. They smell slightly of cocoa. Biting into one you get the contrast of the two flavours, the thin layer of chocolate and the nice firm crunchy nut inside. The chocolate isn't the quality of cadbury's but it doesn't need to be because you have the flavours of the peanut also, I think if the chocolate was too rich it would be too much. The peanuts have a nice bite to them and together with the chocolate makes a nice sweet treat being broken into by a nice slight salty edge from the nuts.
~ Other information ~
25g of Tesco's chocolate peanuts contain 145 calories, 9g of sugar, 9.3g of fat, 3.5g of saturates and only a trace of salt. So, really they are only to be enjoyed in moderation as I weighed out 25g and that's not really many at all and I'd imagine most people could finish of the bag easily which would amount up to a scary amount of calories and fat! But not all the fats are bad because peanuts contain heart healthy fats. The sugar content is also high for just a handful.
Tesco's chocolate peanuts contain soya and milk and obviously contain traces of nuts.
They are not suitable for children in case they choke on the small nuts (unless supervised).
They are suitable for vegetarians!
Tesco's chocolate peanuts contain no artificial colours or flavours.
~ Overall opinion ~
I really do enjoy these as a treat in front of the telly in the evenings but the calories, fat and sugar put me off from buying them as regularly as I'd like too. They are extremely moreish and I find that the bag is empty before you know it! I think they are perfect for a party snack to just put in a little bowl for people to dig in, as a cinema alternative to popcorn or just as a quick snack when you need a pick me up! They also go fantastically well with Tesco's chocolate raisins (which I am going to review shortly). I would recommend Tesco's chocolate peanuts for sure, but they are not particularly diabetic friendly or ideal for someone on a diet. I wish I could buy these more often but I think if I did I would be buying new jeans very soon!
I'm giving Tesco's chocolate peanuts 4/5 stars, for me its the nutritional content that stops this product from getting 5 stars.
---Why I Buy These---
I spend quite a bit of time laid up in bed and a while ago I put together a snack cupboard for the bedroom for emergencies - so that I could get a snack without having to walk to the kitchen.
One item I have found to include was these peanuts.
The bag currently being sold is not the same as in the image above - but the one on the Tesco website is also the same as the above picture.
The bag I have contains 200g and is a bright blue bag.
The front has an image of a gigantic peanut three-quarters coated in chocolate. The blue background has a scattering of small chocolate peanuts all over it with random ones shown only half covered in chocolate.
Shown as being a 'New Improved Recipe'.

86p for 200g on Tesco website.
(Compared with Cadbury Chocolate Coated Peanuts 200g for £1.99.)
I find these chocolate peanuts a very useful and enjoyable snack.
They are good to have a handful with a cup of tea so you get something sweet but it is not as bad for you as eating a pile of biscuits.
I usually only have a few at a time so I can often make a bag last almost a week.
The peanuts are of a good quality and have a nice flavour and the chocolate is very morish and is covered with a glaze so you do not get messy fingers.
I find both the quality of the chocolate and the peanuts very high and would not find a need to upgrade to a better quality product.
I also buy Tesco's chocolate raisins which are equally as good.
For the price the bag lasts a long time so is a cheap treat and one I consider to be not too unhealthy.
* Long lasting
* Good quality
* Not messy
* A great snack.
