      Look good, smell good but taste really bad

      Tesco cheese and tomato rolls are bite sized pastry rolls with a cheese and tomato filling. Te rolls are part of Tesco's frozen range of party foods and come in a 240g bag which contains 16 rolls and retails at £1 per bag. The rolls come uncooked, ready to bake at home

      Packaging

      The rolls come packaged in a plastic bag, the bag has a photograph of the cooked product on the front, the image is a quite realistic picture of what the cooked product looks like.

      Storage Guidelines

      The product should be kept frozen and keeps for the following time period.
      -Ice making compartment - 3 days
      1 star marked frozen compartment - 1 week
      2 star marked frozen compartment - 1 month
      3 & 4 star marked frozen compartment - until best before date (approx 1 year)

      Cooking Instructions

      The product should be cooked from frozen. To cook place the rolls on a lightly greased baking tray, seal side down and at least 2.5cm apart. Brush with beaten egg or milk and cook in centre of a pre-heated oven for 18 minutes at oven temperature 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Reduce the cooking time slightly if using a fan assisted oven.

      Allergy Advise

      The rolls contain milk, wheat and gluten free. The recipe for this product is nut free and is produced in a nut free factory but the packaging does state that they cannot guarantee that the ingredients are nut free.

      My Experience

      I cooked the product as advised, choosing to brush uncooked product with beaten egg rather than milk, I tend to think using egg gives better results than milk but that's just my personal preference. As our oven is fan assisted it was necessary to reduce the cooking time slightly and the rolls were ready in just 15 minutes.

      I used a metal spatula to remove the cooked rolls from the baking tray and found they came off without any difficulty. I had no problems with any of them sticking to the tray as can happen with this type of product. The cooked product looked really nice with the pastry a lovely golden colour. Not only did the rolls looked good they smelt good too, the smell of freshly cooked pasta with a slightly cheesy smell - absolutely divine.

      Then for the all important taste test. The pastry tasted really nice, quite light and flaky. The filling not so good, in fact I would go as far as saying it was absolutely awful. The texture was quite mushy and it is really hard to describe the taste I certainly have never tasted anything quite like it before. It was a really overpowering taste of artificial tomato and I couldn't taste the cheese at all. Really not nice.

      I have had similar products to this before and normally quite like them. (Tesco cheese rolls are particularly nice). But not these, although the pastry was very good it could in no way disguise the taste of the filling. I was not the only person not to like them, I had cooked 2 packs of these to serve as part of a buffet at a family party and of the 10 people to try them not one person liked them and more than half of the 32 rolls cooked ended up in the bin. The verdict was unanimous they really are not good, definitely one to avoid.
