Slim Fast Chocolate Bars
The Box is a brick red shade of orange and the front of the box has the words "Slim-Fast" loudly pronounced in white text, next you have three little circles below that in the centre with "3-2-1" each number in a separate circle. The circles have a blue, green and yellow border respectively as you move from left to right. There is a big picture of the number "2" telling you this is the second part of the 3 part plan from "Slim Fast", I will mention what it is later although we won't dwell extensively on it as I will also explain latter. Finally at the bottom is a picture of the health bar which shows you that it appears to consist of Rice Krispies and chocolate pieces, and a glance round the back of the box confirms it to be so. The packaging is solid if unspectacular however it does a good job of identifying initiates to the Slim Fast plan that this product is a meal replacement product and that it contains chocolate and Rice Krispies.
~~~Why I bought the product~~~
Often I will not include this section in a review unless it has a material impact on how the review is assessed and can bring value to the reader, this is one such case. I bought it not because I wanted to go on a diet plan, I am not a big believer in that sort of stuff and feel exercise is the best way to see results, but actually because I wanted a way to develop my arms somewhat without the risk of putting on more weight (I am not fat but I don't need to gain any weight either) by using a whey or soy protein product which my activity levels simply do not require. I also hoped that it might be able to keep me from snacking on days I do exercise and it has, but I don't seem to have lost any weight yet!
~~~What is the 3-2-1 Plan? ~~~
As I mentioned at the start the box has a number 2 written on it which designates it is to be used as a meal replacement? How'd you know that? Well it goes like this Slim Fast have a philosophy to losing weight, well to you or I we will just call it what it is, a formulaic meal plan. Their meal plan is to have one main meal of approximately 600 calories (lets say a cooked lunch, continental style) which is point 1 of the plan, point 2 is to consume a meal bar or shake (I have no experience of the cost of the shake or a taste and efficacy as regards filling people up, however if its cheaper and works this may be a viable alternative depending on its nutritional profile), finally point 3 is to have 3 snacks a day which can be either 3 pieces of fruit, 3 servings of vegetables or a slim fast snack. So a hypothetical day may look like this:
Wake up, get dressed, meander down stairs, pick a cereal like normal, sprinkle one heaped table spoon of flaxseed on the cereal. Go to work or educational establishment, have a banana in between meals, if possible go out for a cooked meal such as salmon and potatoes, go back to work, go home, have Slim Fast snack. Get ready, go to gym, eat Slim Fast nutritional bar, or drink Slim Fast Shake at gym, come home have another banana, a can of soup or spaghetti and a slice of peanut butter toast as your dinner. You have thus had 3 of your 5 a day, a well-balanced meal, and a lower calorie day.
As you can see there is one major flaw in this plan: the assumption your work place will let you meander off for an hour at lunch time to a venue outside to eat, many places will only allow you to eat at their own places or bring a packed lunch, for higher educational establishments this is not often an issue but is for young people at senior school.
~~~Appearance, taste and texture~~~
The bars are 14 centimetre's or so long (measured them, this compares favourably to a lot of other health bars which are 8 or so cm's long). Taste wise the bars are quite sweet but not sickly and the chocolate tastes real and tasty, not artificial and bitter like I was expecting from a nutritional bar, indeed the chocolate is very milky and tastes just like you would expect a product intended as a treat to taste and not one which has so much protein and vitamins in it. The only slight downside on the taste front is that the texture is quite gloopy and chewy but not intolerably so, only to an extent that it detracts slightly from the product. Slim Fast have done well to get such a nice taste from the product and so much soya and vitamins into a bar without it tasting funny and without it being very hard or chewy to the point of not being able to enjoy the product.
I bought 8 bars for ten pounds or £5 for a 4 pack which means unless you get a special offer the slim-fast 3-2-1 plan would cost you £10 a week which would add up to £520 pounds a year on these alone, before other expenses and actual meals, which is a lot of money. I think it's a little dear personally and its double the cost of Rice Krispie squares ( It is £2.50 for 4 rice crispy squares in my local Tesco, which is around 60p per bar that said those products are only 28 g which means they work out around the same per gram)
~~~Ingredients and Nutrition~~~
Each bar weighs 60g's and is made up of Soya nuggets (23%, the main reason I was first drawn to the product), Rice Crispies (12%), milk chocolate chips (3%), reduced fat plain chocolate powder (1%), Milk Chocolate (10%) and various stabilisers, colourings and whey powder.
Per 60 g bar you get 14 g protein ( a very high amount), 31g carbs ( a low amount relative to total calorie count), 210 kcal (around a fifth of a typical persons dietary requirements), 7g of fibre and only 5g of fats of which only half are saturated. These are very healthy numbers as the protein to fat ratio is nearly 3 to 1 which is far excess of the conservative RDA figures which overestimate fat requirements in the diet (slightly) and underestimate protein requirements (slightly) which most diet sites will mention their own figures adjusting for this.
So far I have only used 3 bars of the eight I bought, I use them on days I have been to the gym and I have found that food wise after eating them I only needed a banana, and some soup and a yogurt to fill me up after doing weights and some light cardio. I did notice that on those days I took the bars my muscle pains where less after a few hours than I would expect however the effect wore off within a day of not taking the bars. I only eat the bars on days I do particularly a lot at the gym as they are quite dear thus I am still not in a complete position to assess them as regards weight loss but what I will say is that I have been on the bars for around 4 weeks now (3 uses) and I have not really lost any weight although I have already mentioned previously I am not following the 3-2-1 plan and can't really afford to use this as a meal replacement every day. I use them as a cheaper faster muscle restore bar due to the soy and whey protein in the bar. I have however noticed increases in the toning and size of my muscles on arms and legs faster than I have managed before in bouts of cyclical on-off periodic gym attending and I would attribute this improvement to the bars thus my desired goal is somewhat working. The best thing I can say about these bars are they taste great it's a shame they are so dear as if they were £3.00 for 4 I would buy many more and would eat one most days and have a smaller dinner instead like I do on some days I go the gym, because these bars are really filling and surprisingly tasty.
~~~Summary and recommendation ~~~
It does produce muscle gain if used as part of a moderate weight lifting routine and it does help somewhat with pain in muscles but for best results need to use every day unlike my regimen. Currently as I am using the product no loss of weights has occurred, I will update if after more usage I get some results. It is actually a pretty cheap product to use as an alternative for whey and soy body building proteins for those guys who want to be stronger, a little bigger, but not huge. However it is also expensive compared to even Rice Krispies squares which are £2.50 for 4 in my local Tesco's which are not that cheap a nutritional bar either compared to their competition. Overall, yes I recommend this product, and the star rating I give it is 3 out of 5.
I got one of these free with a magazine a while back. I like cereal bars and usually have one for breakfast most of the time as they are a great way to eat breakfast on the go and I am usually always busy and running out the door and don't have time for a proper breakfast so I was happy to receive one of these as a free trial. I was excited to try it as some of the cereal bars you can get are quite high in calories and do not keep you full for very long so if a diet bar was going to taste nice and have less calories I was perhaps about to try a bar that was good for me and healthier than my usual breakfast bars.
Slim.Fast believe that losing weight should be a pleasure and that you should enjoy a variety of foods that are delicious as well as nutritionally balanced. I had never tried any slim fast products before this. I am not on a diet per say and although I need to lose some of my baby weight I am doing it with good old fashioned exercise and eating less so I wasn't really trying this bar from the point of view of using it as a meal replacement. That ultimately is what these bars are intended to do. According to the packaging Slim·Fast® Meal Bars provide about 1/3 of your recommended intake of 22 essential vitamins and minerals, as well as protein, fibre, and essential fats. They are great meal replacement options in the Slim·Fast® 3·2·1 Plan, so you'll have plenty of chances to try them all!
This bar was the chocolate crunch. Anything with chocolate in it is perfect for me as I am a bit of a chocoholic so I was excited to ry it. THe bar to me looked a bit like a rice crispie bar. It has a lovely layer of milk chocolate on the bottom of the bar. This layer is fairly thin, there is no thick layer or bit you can bite off but a think layer is better than no layer at all. The main part of the bar is made of rice crisps mixed together with chocolate and also interspersed with milk chocolate chip pieces too. I was quite pleased and surprised to see that there were quite a lot of chocolate chip pieces so you definitely get that nice sweet taste from the chocolate that will satisfy you if you have a chocolate craving whilst on a diet. To me this did not taste like a diet bar. Sometimes with diet bars I think you can really taste that there is less sugar or flavour but this bar was quite flavourful and tasty and large enough to make you feel like you have had a decent snack.
That is my issue with it though. I see this bar as only a snack. I don't think I could have one as a meal replacement, I can have one for breakfast but in conjunction with a banana or another piece of fruit. I don't think there is anyway I could have one of these as a full meal but then I am not following a strict weight los plan. The bar contains only 210 calories so its fairly healthy and for a nice snack great.
These meal bars are part of the Slim Fast 3 2 1 plan, in which you can have 3 snacks (slim fast snack or fruit/veg), 2 Slim Fast meals and 1 balanced 600 calorie meal. The bar is made of muesli and is half dipped in chocolate. It also contains sugar and sweeteners.
I wouldn't say that the taste of these bars are awful, how could they be when their half dipped in chocolate?! But, i did find that, after i'd got about half - way through the bar, the flavour got very boring. Now, i know that diet foods aren't exactly known for their amazing taste, but Slim Fast like to market their products as being 'delicious', which this bar certainly is not.
On the plus side, if you stick to the Slim Fast plan strictly, and include quite a bit of exercise, the weight does start to fall off. But, i only managed to stick to it for a few weeks, as my favourite, but very fatty foods, were too hard to resist after living on meal replacement bars for weeks!
I do plan on trying Slim Fast again, hopefully with some more willpower this time. But if you're looking to lose some weight, and you have more willpower than i do (which most people probably do!) then Slim Fast could really work wonders for you.
*I COPIED THIS REVIEW FROM MY CIAO ACCOUNT WHICH IS UNDER THE SAME NAME*
When I went shopping with my friends yesterday it suddenly occured to me that I couldnt have a Maccys or a KFC while I was out - which is usually what I do so I had to rush to Superdrug to get myself a ready made milkshake to keep me going - me and my friends do shop for a very long time and sustinance is definately needed. But to my horror Superdrug didnt have any of the ready made drinks there so I grabbed the first thing I was with the Slimfast brand name on it and that was this bar. I didnt realise until I read the packaging properly that this isnt just a snack bar but a meal replacement but in that situation it suited me just fine - Id just bought my whole lunch for under a quid!
Stockists: Superdrug, Boots, Supermarkets ETC
Nutritional Information: (Per 60g Bar)
Basically this bar is supposed to contain "safe" values of everything you need in a meal. So your diet is still poretty balanced. This bar also provides a third of your recommended intake of essential vitamins and minerals.
For a full ingredient list check out the Slimfast website.
As this is a meal bar it is quite a lot bigger than the ordinary chocolate bars from this range. Only about 5 bites in the whole bar but if thats all it takes to fill you up then Im fine. This is basically a rice crispie bar dipped in chocolate - that to me is like the dieters dream. This does taste really sweet which I was not expecting and the chocolate tastes like real milk chocolate none of that really artificial stuff you get on most diet bars. Its really sticky and crunchy which makes you feel like your eating a treat and not making a huge sacrifice just because your dieting. This makes for a lovely sweet treat for lunch especially if your on the go because surprisingly this DOES fill you up.
I reckon this bar filled me up for about twice as long as the milkshake usually does and if I could afford them Id be eating them for loads of meals - everyday. I will defiantely be having a look for these in multipacks though and I highly recommend them for anyone whos dieting or on the Slimfast plan. A great, yummy meal that fills you up!
