      Nando's posh crispy offering!

      Just recently I have been decorating my flats bedroom with my Step Dad. I make us lunch most days which is usually a sarnie and a bag of crisps. A bit fed up though with usual bags of crisps like Walkers when I was in my local B & M store and spotted big bags of Nando's crisps for just 39p I was unable to resist grabbing a few bags of them as I knew from the brand that they come from that they were going to be of excellent quality!

      I bought these in 'Medium' spice and I bought some in 'Hot' as well. I like medium spiced things and nothing to hot however my Step Dad loves things as hot as possible so I wasn't sure what he'd make of these!

      The Packaging:

      You'd expect nice high quality packaging from the Nando's brand and with this bag you get just that. The bag on the outside is light beige and then on the front of it there is a small picture of a cockerel and we are told that they are 'Nando's proudly presents a truly magnificent potato chip, generously seasoned with Peri-Peri Chicken' and that they are of course medium in flavour and that the entire bag weighs 150g and then on the back of the bag other information given includes being told a bit about the product, the ingredients and nutritional content is given and contact details for the manufacturer are given.

      Inside of the bag is silver foil to keep the chips/crisps fresh however I am a little disappointed that for such a big bag of crisps there is no reseal option!

      The Chips/Crisps:

      For the rest of this review I hope you don't mind but I will refer to them as crisps as to me that's what they are! What you get is potato crisps that through flavouring are bright orange and evenly coated in powder and rather thickly so. They have a chicken aroma to them (however they are suitable for Vegetarians!) along with a nice spicy sort of peppery smell.

      These are very crunchy and although highly flavoured you can still taste the potato they are made of. The overall flavour of them really does taste like chicken and the peri-peri is actually African birds eye chilli which sounds strong but actually not too much so! These have a spicy flavour, a hint of garlic I think and a nice, natural sweetness with a slight tang and hotness that doesn't make them too hot. My step father and I both equally loved these and agreed that they are really great quality, filling and quite posh crisps!

      Well done to Nando's for these classy and tasty crisps but with 514kcal and 2.7g of saturated fat these are relegated to being an occasional treat!

      Google for stockists but as I mentioned earlier mine came from B & M!

        Disadvantages

        Smell strong, but nice bit of heat

        Nandos are a chain of chicken restaurants (although they serve a few other dishes as well). And although i have never eaten in one before i have it on good authority that the food is both delicious and fairly hot.

        Now Nandos have turned their hand to the manufacture of peri peri crisps. The packet is brown and looks a bit like a brown paper bag youd get at your local grocers, no doubt done for an 'authentic' effect. With the words HOT PERI PERI emblazened on the front in red (dont say you werent warned). On the back of the pack there is a scale of heat in the shape of a chilli pepper, ranging from mild to 'x hot'. The scale puts these crisps one behind 'v hot' and two above mild. Now, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to presume that these crisps come in 3 other heat levels.

        The bag is pretty large at 150g and should survive at least a few maulings before succumbing to emptiness.

        The actual crisps are an impossibly bright orangey red colour and there are a few 'e' numbers in there as well (not indicative of your friendly local grocer at all). Im not too bothered about that kind of stuff but i know there are a lot of people who are and its important to know what your eating.

        As soon as you open the bag your nostrils are assaulted by an overpowering garlicky based smell which is actually not that pleasant. The taste however is passable with these crisps being relatively hot, for a widely available commercial product.

        Nandos use the bird eye chilli which is native to Africa (Kenya i think but im not positive) ground into a powder to give their crisp that little kick.
        Based on the crisp alone i wont be running to nandos restaurant just yet but i must admit i am eager to try the next heat level up.

        All in all not a bad snack, give them a try and see what you think!

          The taste of Nando's captured in a bag ... happy days !!!

          ~~~ INTRODUCTION ~~~
          Nando's is my favourite place to go out for something to eat ... and having read many dooyoo reviews about Nando's it seems like many other dooyoo members agree. Having recently reviewed Nando's very own range of Peri-Peri Marinades I thought I would I would share another great Nando's product with everyone that I have only just discovered today whilst out shopping ... Peri-Peri Chips. However, for those who are new to the Nando's taste (who didn't read my previous review) I will also include my "Rough Guide" to the Peri-Peri taste (please see below).
          ~~~ THE PERI-PERI TASTE: A ROUGH GUIDE ~~~

          Many centuries ago Europeans were at the heart of the Age Of Discovery and it was Portuguese Explorers who first discovered the famous Spice Route to the East. Whilst visiting the Southern African Regions they discovered a magical ingredient the Birds-Eye Chilli (a chilli which the local tribesmen called the Pili-Pili). The new settlers called the chilli Peri-Peri and mixed it with their own blend of herbs and spices to create a number of fiery dishes. These recipes were passed down from generation to generation and when the Nando's chain launched several years ago these traditional recipes were shared with the entire world. Peri-Peri Sauces and Marinades are an exciting mix of African and European spices with a unique taste that has become exremely popular.

          ~~~ NANDO'S PERI-PERI CHICKEN CHIPS ~~~
          Nando's have done it again and recreated the unique Peri-Peri taste in a product you can buy from your local supermarkets. This time, however, it doesn't even involve any preparation or cooking as the Peri-Peri seasoning has been added to a packet of chips. Enjoying the Nando's taste at home has never been easier !!!
          QUESTION: Are Peri-Peri Chips a genuinely great product though or are they just another product pushed onto the market to make more money ???
          >>> OPENS PACKET, REMOVES CHIP, ADMIRES CHIP, TAKES A BITE, CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH ... SWALLOW .... PAUSE FOR A MOMENT TO REFLECT, TRY ANOTHER, CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH ...
          ***********************************************************
          ANSWER: Having just dived into my very first 150g pack I can honestly tell you that they are gorgeous !!!
          So it seems that, yet again, Nando's have produced a quality product. These "chips" have been lovingly "hand-cooked" and are similar in texture to Kettle Chips but the taste itself is far superior. This is because they have used the very same magical mix of herbs and spices that go into the famous Peri-Peri Sauces. The Peri-Peri Chicken flavour is actually quite medium in heat. It has the distinctive Nando's flavour but not the heat so would be the kind of chip that most people would enjoy. Impressively, they have a really great freshly baked aroma (which you can smell the minute you open the packet) and the chips themselves have a wonderful golden appearance. They are exremely tasty too. Think I may have to try another while I think what to write next ...
          Personally, I have to admit that I am addicted to many different brands of spicy snacks. Give me a huge bag of any chilli based crisps, chips or tortillas any day and I would be a happy man. Where some poeple have a weakness for chocolate I have a weakness for spicy snacks and like all products there are some that are great, some that are average and some that tasted once will never be tasted again ... Peri-Peri Chips have just entered my own personal "Spicy Snacks Chart" at Number 1 and unless a serious contender comes along in the next couple of months they could end up being my Christmas Number 1 too !!!
          ~~~ OTHER NANDO'S PERI-PERI CHIPS ~~~

          Now, whilst out shopping this morning I did buy three different 150g packets of Nando's Peri-Peri Chips ... only for research purposes of course ;) It would, therefore, be a waste of a review if I didn't try the other two flavours also !!!

          ***********************************************************
          SORRY FOLKS, MORE CRUNCHING ...
          ***********************************************************

          In addition to the Peri-Peri Chicken Chips, Nando's have also produced two other great flavours ... Smokey BBQ Peri-Peri and Hot Peri-Peri. I have just "sampled" both of these flavours and am happy to report that just like Peri-Peri Chicken Chips they are both extremely delicious ...

          * The Smokey BBQ Peri-Peri flavour Chips are very tasty and are medium in heat like the Peri-Peri Chicken flavour.

          * The Hot Peri-Peri is the flavour I would recommend for heat lovers and thrill seekers as they really do have quite a fiery kick to them !!!

          Nando's Peri-Peri Chips are currently only available in 150g bags and I paid £1.56 per bag at Tesco. Nando's will also be releasing their Peri-Peri Chips in smaller 40g bags ... although I have not seen any today.

          So, that's another dooyoo review under my belt (which i may have to loosen if researching new and exciting products means having to eat this many Peri-Peri Chips). However, I'm sure my sacrifice will be worth it if just one reader goes out, buys some and enjoys them just as much as I have !!!
