“ Brand: Morrisons / Type: Cake „
I rarely visit Morrison's supermarket myself so most of my experience with their own brand products comes from trying them at my daughters house and that is exactly the case with this Morrison's Fresh Cream Strawberry Gateau. I never saw the gateau in its packaging as it was brought through on a plate and placed on the table after our evening meal. The gateau was large and made up from layers of sponge covered in cream and strawberry sauce. There is also a thick layer of cream round the sides of the cake which is covered in tiny pieces of hazelnut, the sponge is very light and the sauce has a very nice consistency to it and it is sweet but not overly so. The cream in the gateau was very thick and delicious and not at all what I would have expected from a stores own brand product, this could easily have passed as an expensive gateau which at £1.99 it certainly was not. The addition of the small strawberry pieces on top and the hazelnut pieces round the side really made this gateau for me and it was certainly a very enjoyable sweet treat that I would recommend to others and I have got my daughter picking me up one of my own today!
I bought my Strawberry Gateau from the frozen food section in my local Morrisons store. I suggested this product to Dooyoo, and they replied by telling me, that this product was already there. This is where they have told me to write my review. The Strawberry Gateau that I am reviewing looks nothing like the one in the above picture. The gateau that I bought comes in a red cardboard box, and has a picture of the strawberry gateau, shown on the front. When I removed the gateau from the box it was sitting on a round paper plate, and the entire gateau, except for the base, was covered by a poylstyrene 'lid'. The 'lid' was attached to the base by a few pieces of sticky tape. The sticky tape came off easily and this allowed me to lift off the polystyrene lid. I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the gateau as it was almost seven inches in diameter. I had expected something a bit smaller. The actual gateau is made up of layers of sponge, filled with cream and strawberry sauce. The top is decorated around the outside with cream which has been piped out into the shape of rossettes. The centre is covered with strawberries in a rich strawberry sauce. There is also a thick layer of cream round the sides of the sponge and this is decorated with tiny hazelnut pieces. I cut myself a slice of the gateau to have a taste. The sponge is very light and springy, and it is very melt in the mouth. The strawberry sauce tastes sweet and is quite thick in consistancy. The cream tastes light and fluffy and goes very well with the rest of the gateau. I found that there were lots of smallish strawberries on top of the sponge and they tasted very soft and sweet. The hazelnuts pieces were chopped very small, and I only got a slight nutty taste through the cream. To defrost this gateau the instructions told me to, remove the packaging and defrost at room temperature for three to three and a half hours. I found that after three hours the gateau was completely defrosted and this included the strawberries. The gateau is not suitable for microwave defrosting. All the ingredients, storage instructions and nutritional values are printed on the back of the box. The allergy advice on the box told me that, the gateau contains eggs, gluten, milk and nuts. This strawberry gateau cost me £1.99 from Morrisons and in my opinion it would serve six people. This is giving generous portions. I will definitely buy this strawberry gateau again, as it tasted delicious, and it was also great value for money.
Morrisons Fresh Cream Strawberry Gateau. (The gateau is not the one in the picture however I will explain both) The one in the picture is a sponge cake base which is then covered in strawberries and then freshly whipped cream, the sponge cake lid is then placed back on , on a slight angle and then more cream is placed on top. The top of the gateux is then covered in cream and topped with strawberries and icing sugar. Really nice and summery dessert. If you love strawberries and cream you will love this. This cake retails at around 2 pounds and should serve 4 people with large portions. The Gateau I was meaning to talk about was the strawberry and custard gateau. The cake has a sponge cake base and then is covered in thick creamy custard and rasberry jam it is then topped with a little cream and then the a spong piece is added to the top. The whole thing is then covered in fresh cream and the sides are coated with chocolate flakes. On the top, there are swirls of fresh cream with scrumptious strawberries added with sprinkles of chocolate. What a fab dessert! This cake costs around 2.50 and will serve 4 people large portions. It is make in the morrisons store and if you ask them they will make you one in store whilst you are there. This cake also comes in a larger size but you need to request this to have it made.
