      Very helpful

      Excellent for just £1

My dad recently bought home a couple of Lyons cakes recently, one of them being the Lyons Country Fruit Cake. I really like cake and will eat most varieties but do quite like ones with fruit in. However, I am very put off by really heavy fruit cakes such as the ones eaten at Christmas so it's a fine balancing act for me.

This one can be found at Budgens and at Sainsburys for £1 and comes in other varieties too. I really like the Lyons Battenburg cake so thought this would be good too though the low price did make me question it a bit.

This comes in a dark blue box with the Lyons logo on it and a window through which you can see what you're buying. It's clearly aimed at those who like a nice afternoon snack as there are pictures of cups of tea all over the box.

Inside the cake is wrapped in a plastic wrapper to keep it fresh. The cakes says that it is designed to feed six but I always cut it into quarters which makes it roughly 300 calories a go.

I was quite impressed with this cake. The sponge was not moist, dry sponge is a pet hate of mine and often seen in cheap cakes and there was a generous helping of sultanas and cherries and to top it off, they had put a layer of sugar on the top. It wasn't too heavy but by putting fruit in there, it made the cake avoid the issue of blandness. I could easily eat this solo but it would go well with tea or with milk.

      Surprisingly good for just £1.
