“ Brand: Iceland / Type: Snacks „
It was my 21st birthday last week and my family threw a barbeque for me, there was a vast variety of food on offer and these skewers were one of the items.
There are 12 skewers per pack and these cost £2.00 each from Iceland stores, although you can buy 3 packets for £5.00.
The skewers were placed on a baking tray and put in the oven for around 20 minutes before being finished off on the barbeque (mainly to make sure that they were cooked thoroughly). The skewers have about 6 small pieces of chicken on each one and it does look like one giant piece of giant when you first see it but the bite size pieces were perfect for adults and small children alike. The sauce was indeed very sticky and had a lovely oriental flavour to it, it complemented the chicken very well & I had a good 3 or 4 of these (birthday rights after all!).
The chicken was not the highest quality but it was perfectly ample, I don't think that this was breast meat as it was not really white enough but it was fine for a barbeque which contained many other items that were chicken breast.
I was really pleased with these skewers and the 3 packets that had been brought got eaten in record fast time. I was very pleased with the taste of them and that the chicken didn't just break off the skewer as soon as I picked it up. I would highly recommend them and at 45 calories and 4g of fat per skewer they are not that bad at all (yes, the fat content is a little on the high side but it was a barbeque after all!). I am rating these 5/5 as I can't really find anything bad about them at all and I think they would compliment any barbeque or party food night very well.
I don't often shop at Iceland as I find them generally overpriced for the quality of their own brand food, I particularly dislike much of their 'party' food but my daughter recommended these Sticky Chicken Skewers when I mentioned the awfulness that was Sainsbury's Yakitori Skewers to her. I know she has good taste when it comes to party and buffet foods so decided to buy a couple of boxes for the small buffet I was putting on for my granddaughters' on New Years Eve.
The twelve skewers need a little longer than the 22 minutes as instructed on the box, but after around 27 minutes they were browned beautifully and were obviously thoroughly cooked. The wooden skewers themselves hadn't burned which was a definite bonus as I hate it when they go black because it makes the whole plate look disgusting!
I think the chicken used is thigh meat as it's a little darker than I would expect, it's also incredibly moist inside and has soaked up the flavours of the oriental marinade. The chicken is threaded onto the skewer in bite sized chunks, with each skewer holding six or seven small pieces which are closely packed together so that at first glance it looks like one thick piece of chicken. It tastes like proper chicken should and has a good rounded flavour to it.
The oriental sauce is delicious and really does make these Sticky Chicken Skewers sticky. It's a soy sauce base and this is the overriding flavour covering the chicken, I can also detect honey and a subtle nutty flavour which makes these chicken skewers both savoury and slightly sweet at the same time. They are extremely moreish and my granddaughters' and I devoured all twelve very quickly! They just have a lovely unusual taste which makes you lick your fingers afterwards, it's hard to put into words but they are almost addictive and definitely rank high in the long list of chicken skewers I've tried from shops over the years.
Each skewer contains 45 calories and 4g of fat, I'm surprised at how low calorie they are but I wasn't expecting such a high fat content really as these are not greasy in the slightest. My granddaughter dipped hers in a garlic mayonnaise and said they were lovely like this, although I enjoyed the coating of these skewers so much that I didn't want to spoil it with another flavour.
I would thoroughly recommend these even to people who don't rate Iceland very highly, I think these cost only £1.79 too which is a bargain for such a tasty and substantial addition to my buffet table.
