After a hard training session I usually like to tuck into something meaty to give me a good source of protein, however if I'm at a race or don't fancy cooking a big meal then I usually eat one of these along with a small meal. This protein bar is made by High 5 and is Banana & Vanilla flavoured. It cost me £1.60 from my local cycling shop. --- The Wrapper --- The bar comes wrapped in a plastic wrapped that is mainly green and yellow in colour. The wrapper and bar is 15cm x 4cm x 1cm in size. The front of the bar has "Protein Bar" in large yellow letters that draws you to it and the rear contains a lot of small print that outlines the product information in many languages. --- The Bar --- When you open the wrapper, the bar looks more like a chocolate bar than a protein bar as it is coated in a thin layer of chocolate all over. The inside of the bar is beige in colour and has a thick texture that looks a bit like a biscuit(however it is totally different to a biscuit when you bite it). After a hard exertion, this bar is designed to give your body a source of protein to help repair and build the muscles that you have used so that when you use them again they will be repaired and stronger for the next exertion. Per 50g bar, it contains 13g of protein, 190 calories, 19g of sugars and 5g of fat. --- The Taste --- The bar is meant to be a mix of banana and vanilla flavours and this is definitely noticeable in the flavour of the bar. The inside of the bar has a nice scent of bananas which is really nice. When you bite into it there is initially the chocolate taste and then the lovely banana and vanilla tastes are noticeable. The banana flavour is a lot more noticeable than the vanilla, but it is still really nice. The bar has a nice soft text that I find requires quite a bit of chewing before you can swallow it. I find that this isn't a problem but eating it all in one go makes me feel a little sick and bloated as I find that is quite heavy on my stomach. I therefore eat it slowly over a period of 30mins to 1 hour with a drink to help it go down a lot better. --- Any Effect? --- With protein bars I find that it is hard to notice any effect that it has as it happens over a longer period of time compared to energy bars and gels. I expect that it does have a good effect on helping my muscles repair and strengthen quicker, but how much of an effect I am not sure. I would like to hope that they have a good effect as for the price paid I hope they do something! --- Where to Buy? --- The High5 range of energy bars, gels, drinks and protein bars is starting to become a lot more widely available as it gets more popular. Generally you should be able to find it in any good cycling /sports shop or from any good online retailer. For a single protein bar it will cost you about £1.60 depending on where you buy it from, but if you by them in bulk then you can get them for a lot cheaper per bar. --- Other Flavours --- Alongside the Banana & Vanilla flavour, you can also get them in a double chocolate flavour which to me sounds like it could be quite sickly! --- Further Information --- If you want to find further information on this product then you can have a look on http://www.high5-online.com/acatalog/info_48.html --- Overall Opinion --- I think this bar is really nice for a protein bar and I expect that I shall be buying them again soon. The price is quite steep but as I don't have them too often then I'm not too worried. I don't think I will try the other flavour on offer as it sounds a bit sickly for my liking. I believe that these do have an effect on how quickly my muscles recover and strengthen, but how much of that is just psychological and how much is actual physical action I am unsure. I am going to give this bar 4/5 as it is a very good protein bar but the high price of it is a little off putting for me and I expect others. Thanks for reading.
