“ Brand: Asda / Type: Cereal Bar „
I often work on the RNLI stall on Llandudno seafront on Sunday selling lifeboat souvenirs and as the stall is open from 8am until 6pm I need some food and drink to take with me that would keep my blood sugar steady without ruining the diet which is still going well if a little slowly now.
When I was in Asda the other week I was looking at the cereal bars and noticed that they do their own version of Kellogg's Nutrigrain and they call it Asda Fruit & Grain. The flavours currently available are strawberry, blueberry, mixed fruit and apple and cinnamon. I decided to try the strawberry one as it sounded the most appealing to me.
A pack containing eight individually wrapped bars cost me £1.52 so that works out at just 19p per bar. So far so good then! LOL!
The cardboard box is nice and bright with a picture of strawberries across the top and a fruit and grain bar broken in two across the middle. As the box is cardboard it can and should be recycled.
The information on the front tells us that the bars inside are a 'source of fibre' and 'healthier for your digestion' and that they contain 'vitamins and calcium'. They are suitable for vegetarians and are advertised as 'cereal goodness on the go!'
There is further information on the back of the box showing ingredients (and there's a lot of them!), allergy advice and detailed nutritional information. The writing on the back of the box tells us that these are 'Soft baked multigrain cereals bars with a sweet strawberry filling, fortified with vitamins and calcium. The moist fruit and grain bar is the no mess, no fuss way for busy people to eat breakfast on the go.'
The bars are all individually wrapped in bright red foil with the simple words Asda Fruit and Grain Strawberry on the front.
I tore open the foil and cereal coating to the bar looked nice enough. In fact it looked exactly like the Kellogg's version except for the fact that it was very soft to the point of being floppy. (No mucky comments please! LOL!)
Well the taste was smashing! The outside was soft and chewy with a nice flavour of the grains and the strawberry mixture inside was sweet, but not sickly, making for a lovely mixture of flavours in my mouth. I would only eat these as a snack - I wouldn't want to replace my healthy breakfast with a cereal bar except in an emergency!
Nutritional Information per 37g bar
Of which sugars 12.3g
Of which saturates 0.7g
So the calorie value and amount of sugar per bar are both quite high.
Although these bars taste really nice they are quite high on calories and the amount of sugar per bar is higher than I would like too. They did help to keep me going during my long day on the lifeboat stall but the calorie count and sugar content are a bit too high for my diet and my diabetes so I think these will have to be an occasional treat rather than one of my first choices!
The other thing that is worthy of note is the fact that, as with ALL Asda products, they offer a refund and replace policy which states that they will refund your money AND replace the product if you are not 100% happy! Now you can't say fairer than that can you?
