      R.I.P. Dell Streak

As a concept, this phone was a really good idea...a lovely large 5" screen for optimised web browsing and app useage...but there was something fundamentally wrong about the Dell Streak...and this has now been discontinued by Dell. I had this phone as my work phone for a little while...and we saw ALOT of these come in for touch screen and LCD issues...mine befell the same fate and stopped responding to the unlock panel when someone was calling me!

So first the plusses....as I said, the large display is a really good idea for web browsing...and the Android platform means that there are a host of apps available which integrate nicely with the Dell Stage, Dell's own widgets/interface that they have put over the standard Android OS. It comes with 16Gb storage which is adequate really and has a memory card slot for scope to expand to 32Gb. It has a nice finish, a nice camera and okay battery life.

But now for the bad things. The UI can be slow. This phone got updated to Android 2.2 and that's it. Android 4.0 is on the horizon so anyone phone shopping would be better off looking for an Android phone that is going to have more future lastability (like the Samsung Galaxy Note). It can be slightly absurd to use as an actual phone (anyone familiar with the Nokia N-Gage will already have had a similar experience!) One downside is that you need big pockets or a rucksack to carry it in!

Overall, this phone is better on paper that it is in real life. If you want an Android experience with a large display, there are definitely better options...there are some nice small 3G tablets coming out and a few mobile phones that will have larger displays....the Dell has unfortunately died a death for very good reason.

A good all-rounder, which could be the missing link in the phone to tablet evolution!!!

I remember when everyone was queuing up for the I-Phone 4 18months ago and I thought - No, I want to be different. So, I perused through the local phone store near work and found they had an exculsive - the Dell Streak. 16 Gb, great for storage; nice big screen, loads of great games on the Android market and they are a lot easier with the big Dell Screen - but that was one of the things I had to weigh up.....the SIZE.
If you want a nice petite phone, that will fit in your back/front pocket - this is not for you. However, if you are looking for that thing that is in between a phone and a tablet....Ladies and Gentlemen - we have a winner!! I LOVED MY DELL STREAK, I do a long commute into work and literally have enough time to watch a film. I love playing some of the touch based android free games such as gems and web browsing is a treat. Having such a large screen is a massive benefit and the resolution is crisp and clear. I will profess that that the weight and size can be a bit frustrating at times and it will need a daily charge if you are constantly using it, but worth it in my point of view. With regards to the size problem, that's what bags were designed for, to put stuff you want with you in!!!
Overall, if you are looking for a device for online browsing with the same experience as if you were using your laptop (just a bit more compact), looking at pictures of your treasured memories without squinting and a well fast processing speed, let alone the rest of the funky little things it can do too - plus when you start downloading android apps free/paid you will be impressed!!

In my humble opinion, you should go down to your nearest stockist and have a little play with it and if after the first 5min you are still thinking about the size and not how much it can do for you - then go start looking for anything on the market that can compete with this device on quality of screen size v. resolution, good storage and versatility of use with all standard expectations and available on a reasonable tariff free or to buy.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A good phone/tablet not without it's flaws but great for anyone with big hands or poor eyesight

      + is for my edits
      ============

The Dell Streak, a 5inch screened behemoth that feels too large to be a phone and too small to be a tablet (although on the packaging it is stated as a "tablet") Ahhhh schizophrenic gadgets!

Quickly I will add: If you buy this or have this update it straight away to Android 2.2

With phones getting larger and many running Android OS the distinction between phone & tablet is difficult to figure out. I would say, if you're holding it up to your ear and it's the main way to speak to people then it's a phone, if not it's a tablet.

The Dell Streak is big but not too big for your pocket and not too big to hold up to your ear so it's my primary phone. The 1Ghz processor inside feels zippy for most tasks but compared to a LG Optimus 2x or Samsung Galaxy 2 it feels sluggish.

+First things first, the speaker on the phone is far from brilliant, it's often difficult to make out what people are saying at the best of times. I'm fairly sure that it is the speaker that is at fault here and not the connection or the other persons microphone but this is difficult one to figure out nowadays.

The battery life isn't brilliant, until I figured out how to turn off background data updating the battery life was quite short to the point that it would go from 70% to 20% overnight when I wasn't even using it!

The camera is average I would say. 5 mega pixels is all most really need but the quality of the images lack due to the lens/ccd.

At first I was feeling a little bit cold towards the Android OS compared to IOS (as found on Apple devices) as it felt a little undeveloped and rough around the edges. After much use though I would say with a bit of patience, Android is a a great OS for mobile devices and will only get better.

The Dell comes pre-installed with Dell Stage which is basically the home screen and app drawer; how it looks and functions. I have no problem with using Dell Stage but it's easy to install something more customisable like "go launcher".

I love the 5 inch screen. It will be difficult to go back to using a smaller screened phone now. I find the screen to be sharp and vibrant.

To my surprise my Streak came with a 16gb sd memory card which I find to be more than adequate for my every day needs (thanks Dell for shipping a large capacity card and not a 512mb one like some companies do!)

I really love my Dell Streak, it might have flaws but the size of the screen alone makes it fun to use and a conversation point with strangers who are always stunned by this huge shiny black device you'll be wielding!

+ As a tablet the Dell Streak works really well, it's above average in terms of speed, the controls are well placed and the screen is very responsive. As a phone however, the call quality lacks and the reception sometimes drops (although again that might be a problem with my network) but texting works fine. I use the swype keyboard that it comes installed with and sometimes switch to T9 like the good old days, I'm undecided which keyboard I find works best.

+For me the less than average use as a phone isn't really a problem. I would say I use it for daily tasks, browsing and doing work on more than I use them to call or text people.

+A quick tip: When in your pocket, place the phone with the screen facing away from your leg. Either the static or the heat makes the screen less responsive. I believe this is a problem with other smartphones too but the problem appears to be worse with the Dell Streak.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

very well priced phone that is loded with features and a massive 5 inch screen

As I was browsing through new phones o the internet and in shops, I was looking for something unique and something that is not as common as an iPhone. I came a across a phone with a large screen that put the iPhone and other top phones to shame. It was called the Dell Streak.

        Packaging

I read about it and heard great reviews so I went out and purchased it from my local mobile retailer. When I took it home and opened the box I was amazed by the beautiful black finish and size of the device. In the packaging you get a standard usb charger which also is used to send data to your phone, a pouch which is also used from cleaning the screen. You get a hands free kit that is excellent in sound quality when making calls and listening to music. The clarity and loudness of the music is excellent and is up there with high end mp3 players.

        Contours and design

The design is something unique. It is also called a tablet/phone. The phone is like a tablet computer but it will fit in your hand nicely to be used as a phone. The phone has a rubber feel to the sides which prevents it from slipping away from your hand and the strong glass will prevent you from scratching it easily. It fits nicely in your pocket but does weigh a little bit, it's about 200 grams. You get some buttons on the side for photo taking and volume controls.

        Technical hardware specs

The phone has a powerful processor is 1GHZ which is greats for multitasking and performing daily functions with ease. It has such a high resolution of 800x400 which is so easy to read and looks so vibrant in colour. You will se the difference when watching full screen videos, pictures and webpages. The massive 5 inch screen is one of the main reasons for me purchasing the device. Best of all the entire camera is crystal clear in picture quality and it has led lights for a flash.

        Battery life

The battery lasts a long time. I used it for 3 days of heavy use with messaging, game playing and music. For a device this big, you would think it will be power hungry, but performs very well! The GPS feature is most probably the factor that will drain the battery life but by not that much.

        Android platform

It's a shame that it came with the android 1.1 software but never fear there is an Android 2.2 coming out which will give out greater flexibility in what the device does and will performs better which results in improved battery life.

        Overall

I am very happy with the device, it's a great price and it is loaded with features that will keep you entertained for hours on end and improve productivity for business.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

A well thought out offering for those willing to think outside the box

Having for a number of years been into my technology but having gone for a mobile phone based on looks over substance I decided that a change was in order and so after hearing of the new offering from Dell I decided to take out a contract with O2 meaning that the Dell Streak would come free as part of my package.
The Dell Streak is a new concept which Dell hope may create and then corner a new market with those who wish to have functionality of a tablet pc (eg an IPAD) but being slightly bigger than a mobile phone but does this really work as a concept?

Having had my Streak for a number of months now I have been impressed with the overall quality and feel of the item and even though the device is weighty, for some people this is a negativeI have found this to be something I got used to quickly and actually found to be good as it means that you have less chance of losing it (you can't walk away and not notice a difference in the weight in your pockets).
The 5" screen on the phone is excellent in terms of picture quality, colours and brightness and thanks to being made of toughened gorilla glass the screen is not like other touch screens which you worry about cracking or damaging as it has a feeling of strength and toughness to it aswell as quality. The screen being large does have a drawback in that it drains the battery very quickly (normally I will charge my phone every day) but as it can be used for so much it becomes something which is less of a drawback than it at first seems.

So what does the phone give you?

The Streak gives you a mobile phone with text, picture, media messaging, e-mails, fully internet, book reader, 5mp camera, video capabilities, you tube, social networking capabilities, chat through messenger, calender, alarm clock, calculator, games, GPS, navigation, goodle maps and much more.
The phone uses the google android operating system and using the google marketplace you can purchase and download many applications for your mobile including games, lie detectors, heart rate monitors, photo editing software, book readers, news feeds, etc.

So with all of this available what of the quality?

The phone is well designed and easy to use with an easy to use touch screen that enables quick and simple navigation. The quality of the speaker and microphone are good which shoes Dell has not negleted to remember its roots as a mobile phone device as the main usage.
An easy to read and strongly put together screen make the device simple to use as a book reader, use the internet on or view the photos you have just taken with the good quality 5mp camera.

I have had this for a number of months and use it all of the time for a variety of things and simply can't recommend the phone enough to people. Drawbacks for some would be its weight and size but see past this just being a mobile phone and all you are getting in one portable device and you will understand why I disregard these drawbacks and say that given a small amount of time it will become something you love and use all the time too.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

5 star performer and attention bringer

I would like to start this review with a remark that I`m not an Apple fanboy and I`ve waited for a looong time for this gadget to hit the market. For the month of ownership, the Streak never ceased to amaze me and I believe that the following review will be of a great use to you all.
          So let's get started...

          What's in the box?

The artwork on the box suggests that you'll have an edge to edge display, unfortunately it's not. Inside you will find all standard stuff like a USB charger (both with EU and UK plugs), USB cable and a microfiber pouch that can be used as a cleaning cloth. The one piece I`d like to emphasize on is the 3.5mm handsfree kit with an impressive sound quality and above average bass, plus you get three sets of rubber buds to fit right for your ears.

          Design

The main idea behind the Streak`s design is for you to have a device that is big enough to be used as a tablet and small enough to be used as a phone. It ended up to be a good looking gadget, which is quite an attention seeker while using it as a phone without a handsfree. Actually its size is just right, but it's not possible for one to surf single handedly. It weights 220g, but the thing you`ll notice is its "thickness" of 9.9mm that was the first wow effect for me. The built quality seconds to none (even to my precious PSP). The rounded edges and the matt finish allows you hold it comfortably without that slippery feeling. The Gorilla Glass really proved to be idiot-proof for me and still not a scratch on it.

          Hardware

The 1GHz Snapdragon CPU is just fine and I find no lag or delays whatsoever. The 5"capcitive display looks sharp, with no light leakage or over saturation. The resolution of 800x480 is optimal for viewing web pages in landscape mode. I also have the largest supported 32BG MicroSD card to store movies and MP3z though I use it as a PMP. The front-facing VGA camera is ok if you want to have a look at yourself on the 5"screen, but I never got it to work for Fring or Skype video chat. I hope that with future updates it will get in use. The five megapixel autofocus camera with its dual LED flash performs well during daytime, but don't expect to use it as something else than a torch at night.

          Battery

For the capacity of 1530mAh and having in mind the screen size, it is an absolutely brilliant performer. At heavily usage of 2-3 hours a day of all around device usage (mainly surfing the web, some video and audio playback and at least an hour of telephony) it lasts for a whole 3 days. I`m impressed. Hope it will keep up that good for the time being.

          Software

Since Streak ships with Dell customized but outdated Android 1.6, I can't wait for the final Froyo update that is supposed to be available soon. Sure there are lots of custom roms by various developers, but in my experience nothing is that stable as the official updates are. I`m not into reviewing the appstore, but I have no problems with compatibility so far and all my needs are satisfied. GPS navigation looks great on the hi-res 5" and the satellite hook-up is really fast. I use Gmaps and if you are not limited in data I recommend it.

          Conclusion

It's not perfect, but it's close. It is a stylish, hi-tech performer that will never mislead you to the wrong direction. If you are an attention seeker and want something that will turn peoples head, than you've got to have it. With the 2.2 update coming, it will get that perfect as it should be. And yes - you can fit it in your back pocket. Streak is a true bargain, don't miss it.

Edit: Android 2.2 available in UK now!!!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Overall a great smartphone

I purchased the Dell Streak as a upgrade thru O2. I did have a few problems with it in the beginning ie: the battery cover was not connecting correctly and was causing the phone to reboot every time i put it down. I do like the phone or should i say computer, becauase it really can do what a computer can do. Email, internet, games, music. It has the lot. Making calls are easy just touch the screen and you are away. The loudspeaker is fantastic and you are able to hear the other person very clearly. Texting is easy with the on screen keyboard large enough for you to hit the right keys. The music player is great, you can create a playlist or just choose an album. the sound quality is superb. Using it as a phone may look like going back to the 90's and the famous Dom Joly sketch but it usefullness far outways its bulkyness.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Even though it only supports android 1.6 it is still he ebst thing out on the market today

I have been waiting to be able to revew the Dell Streak for a while now since it has been released in the UK. I purchased this directly from O2 as I just had to purchase it as I think it is a next step up from your usual smartphone.

            Price

The price of the Dell Streak varies from retailer I got it from O2 for £399 but I have this phone for £429. I think the price really does reflect good value for money for what it actually includes compared to a lot of other phones.

            Features

I think that the main feature you will notice about this phone is the fact that it has a colossal 5" which is fantastic to watch video or view photos on. Other features include Android 1.6 which is expected to be upgraded to version 2.0 by September time which is a must.

            Usability

I have heard people say this is very difficult to use with it being that big and you can not use it as a phone. Don't get me wrong im not going to say it is the easiest phone in the world but you should know that before you buy it. I find it easy to use as a phone even though you may look like a numpty holding it to your ear. Apart from that I find texting very simple on the tablet also.

            Battery Life

The battery life on the Streak was not as bad as I actually thought it would be. I expected it to last literally a few hours with it being so high in technology. I find that I can easily get a day or more out of it if I am careful.

            Overall

Overall I would rather this as the best smartphone/tablet on the market today. I think it offers everything that you would need and MORE. Even though £399 might seem like a big commitment for something which is not tried and tested but i really do recommend trying it out becuase once you do you will be happy you did.
