Hands up if this has ever happened to you as I bet it has. You know the scene, you have just prepared a lovely cake mixture, preheated the oven, lined your tins, poured out the cake ready to be baked and then added it to the oven. You note the time on the clock/oven and count forward to remind yourself what time you need to take the cake out, its a memorable time so you know you will remember. Meanwhile you walk out of the kitchen and the television/magazine/kids grab your attention and you forget about your cake in the oven. You walk back aimlessly into the kitchen sometime later to get a glass of water and wonder what that awful smelling coming from the oven is accompanied by plumes of smoke and its then you remember your cake or what was a cake and is now just a big lump of charcoal. Ok so its a bit extreme but after forgetting about one too many cakes and having them burn just a little bit I decided to invest in a proper kitchen timer. I have long coveted the Alessi range of kitchen ware. When I got married a few years ago now I had quite a few items on my gift list from John Lewis including a very fetching cat bowl that looks like a cat but I always go and have a browse at their items when I'm in John Lewis nowadays. I think its something to do with the quirky unique styling and Italian design (although I probably should not be promoting Italian products in a review that I am posting for the England v Italian football quarter final competition) that is a bit different from regular kitchen ware and its here that I spotted this cool Alessi kitchen timer. I needed to replace my old timer that had stopped working and this was the perfect one for my needs. I have quite a black designed kitchen, I have black granite style worktops and a black range master and so I wanted to get a timer that would blend in with the surroundings but also stand out as something of a conversation piece as well which is definitely what this timer does. I have also see this timer on sale in an off white/cream colour as well with red accents which I think is also very stylish looking but I knew I wanted the black although I was quite tempted by this white one!The timer is cone shaped but also made to look like an angel with its wings spread open. The wings are at the top of the timer obviously and there is also a little stopper at the top too. Like I've said the timer is black but it also has a chrome ring around it with the marker on it telling you what amount of time you have added to the timer. The timer operates with a mechanical movement and I have found it to be very accurate so far, it doesn't lose time and has been spot on and so far so good, no burnt cakes. The marking goes around the base in 5 minute intervals, so starting with a 0 and going all the way round to 55 minutes and back to 0 with a full rotation being one hour. The timer cost me £19.50 from John Lewis. Its a bit expensive yes but I really like the style and look of this kitchen appliance and definitely recommend it if you are a fan of these products.
