My reason for visiting the National Stud was of course to see the horses however the most memorable part of the day was a walk around the Japanese garden. On entry I was given a guide which directs you to follow the 'Path of Life'. The garden has various landmarks for you to find taking you from birth to death. Along the way you enter the tunnel of ignorance - a dark cave (beware you could get your feet wetif it has ben raining) further along the way you are given a choice of choosing an easy life or the rockier path of a successful career. You can also choose a single life or marriage. Until finally you reach the end of life on a small hill under some interestingly shaped trees and pass through the gateway of eternity. Along the way you encounter bridges and stepping stones across a small stream that runs through the garden. You also come across dead ends and loops in the path which represent disappointment and frustration that your goal is in sight but cannot be reached. The walk takes about an hour to complete is very enjoyable. You need to take your time to enjoy not only the story but also the splendor of this beautiful garden Facts The garden was created between 1906-1910 on the site of a drained bog. The garden was the idea of Lord Wavertree who called upon the assistance of Japanese gardeners to help establish the garden. Situated a few miles out of Kildare and near to the Curragh racecourse. The guide book I read said it was a 10 minute walk from Kildare but I would suggest more like 20 to 30 minutes or a car drive! Open Easter until October 10.30 to 17.00 Ticket includes entrance to Japanese Garden, National Stud, Racehorse Museum and Millenium Garden
