For many years, when Capt Springtide ran out of shaving gel I would buy whatever was the most cheap and cheerful. Mostly this would be a supermarkets own brand until one day by chance I picked up a can of Gillette Series Shave Gel for Sensitive Skin and from that day on it has been the only one that he will use. Once he has got something he likes, that's it.I too, have been known to steal his precious can when the legs emerge from the winter so this review is from a joint perspective, a sort of 2 for 1 special offer.
With "Gillette" written in large letters on the blue and silver aerosol can it is easy to spot on the shelf. My can may be a little different as it was bought somewhere in Spain but I can see that it has a comfort glide formula and that it's aloe vera content provides a smooth shaving experience. On the reverse of the can in five languages, none of which are English, it tells us that it has a light fragrance and reminds us to that it is under pressure and must be kept out of direct sunlight and the reach of children and that it is inflammable.
That out of the way, on to the shaving experience. My husband does not very sensitive skin but he does say that this helps the razor to slide over the skin and so help to cut his very strong beard. Think Spanish Desperado and you have an idea. Give the can a quick shake and then take off the transparent top. This top might as well go in the bin now as it is never replaced. The bluey coloured gel is thick and translucent and comes out easily when the top is depressed. A little goes a long way and I always tend to be over enthusiastic and squirt too much..Next rub your hand together and as if by magic it turns into a nice thick mousse with a lovely fresh and slightly spicy fragrance.
Once applies to wet skin and smoothed around you can start to shave. The razor really does glide well and does not block up and makes shaving very easy. Once the job is done the remainder washes away easily and you are left with nice smooth skin without any nicks or rough bits.
It is worth the extra money to have a happy shaving experience with such a nice fragrance thrown in as well. I now never buy a shaving gel aimed at women because this does the job so well and leaves my legs smooth and soft, which is what after all, I am aiming for. It is more expensive than others prices seem to vary between 2.00 pounds and 3.00 pounds for 200ml but I think it is worth it especially on special offers.
5 out of 5 stars from us.
Readily available in supermarkets the can is recyclable.
Thanks for reading my review, I also post on Ciao under splishsplash
I usually buy shaving foam, rather than gel - habit more than anything - but I got this because it was on special offer, approximately half price at about £1.50 for a standard sized 200ml can.
As is normal with these things, you press a button at the top and out squirts your shaving material. This gel turns out to be bright blue and somewhat slimy. Smearing it over my face is easy enough, it spreads fairly well. If anything, I tend to get a bit more than is really necessary, so the layer is thicker than needed. This makes it a bit more difficult to scrape it off, though it doesn't make a huge difference, but is obviously a bit of a waste. It feels quite cold against my skin, which I don't particularly like; the feel of my usual foam is much warmer, perhaps because it is less substantial. Rubbing it in doesn't really seem to make much difference compared with simply leaving it there - potentially a time saver, though I always try and leave it on for a few minutes anyway unless I'm in a tearing hurry.
The gel does the job of softening my bristles adequately, and shaving takes about the same length as normal. Any remaining bits stick to my skin a bit more thoroughly than the foam, so washing it off requires a bit more attention. Having said that, it doesn't spread itself around quite so much, so wings and roundabouts on that aspect.
I usually avoid shaving products with associated smells because in my experience they all pong horribly and having to sniff them all day from my upper lip probably contravenes the Human Rights Act. Thus I generally go for the plainest variety I can. I didn't notice when I bought it that this gel contains aloe vera and although the scent isn't strong, I do find it quite noticeable, and not all that pleasant after a while.
The specific can I got was for sensitive skin (the only aspect of me which is sensitive). It succeeded quite well in that respect, in that it didn't irritate me, or produce any unpleasant sensations on my face.
Not a complete disaster, but by no means my best buying choice. I'll finish this can, but will be returning to my normal unscented foam once it runs out, even if it means paying full price.
My other half received this Gillette Series sensitive skin shave gel in a gift set and he recently offered it to me as he uses an electric razor so doesn't use a shaving foam or gel.
~ Packaging ~
The can he gave me is a 75ml can. It is silver and dark blue with, 'Gilette Series sensitive skin' across the front. It also says, '3x triple protection' and states that this is a gel and there is a little picture of a swirl of shaving gel.
The can has a translucent plastic lid.
The product is quite obviously aimed towards men.
~ Price and availability ~
This shaving gel is usually available in a 200ml can for £3.19 from Boots, but it is currently reduced to £1.59, which I think is great value.
It is also available from Wilkinsons and Superdrug.

The shaving gel is dispensed easily by holding down the button on top of the can. The gel is blue in colour and it has a lovely aquatic masculine scent to it.
I have found that quite a lot comes out of the can at once and I have ended up wasting quite a bit of it from accidentally applying too much.
I use the gel when I am shaving my legs. It feels really thick and a little goes a long way with this gel. You would need to use even less on your face.
The gel claims to be an improved anti-friction gel for unsurpassed razor glide and a closer, smoother, more comfortable shave.
The razor glides with ease over my legs and the gel is moisturising so my skin doesn't look or feel dried out after use. My skin is left feeling soft and smooth after using this gel.
The shave gel also claims to be formulated with Aloe Vera to gently soothe and deliver the protection and comfort needed for healthy looking skin.
I have found the gel gentle on my skin and I have never suffered any irritation from the product itself or from shaving using the product.
I have enjoyed using this shaving gel. Being aimed towards men, I don't think I would buy it again, but I did like the feel and the scent of it and would consider the women's equivalent shaving gel from Gillette.
I managed to get some of the gel on my clothes and I found that it washed out without a trace, which I was also pleased about.
I've got quite sensitive skin, when shaving it can sometimes cause a rash-like appearance which is very sore so I am always careful about which products I use. Some make it worse, others make it less extreme, finding out which ones do which is sometimes interesting! This particular product is one which makes it less extreme as it is more gentle than others that I have tried.
When I bought this last it cost £2. I think that is a reasonable price to pay for a brand like this.
The packaging is easy to spot as it's got the big Gillette logo on the front. It's a dark bluey-green coloured can which is tall and has a silver top to it and a see-through lid. To use it you give it a bit of a shake and then press the top down which then dispenses the gel. This comes out slowly and you have control over it depending upon how hard you push it down. It's good that it comes out slowly, if it was fast and you got too much you couldn't put it back as it is airtight.
When I apply this I make sure I have washed my face first so it's slightly wet and then I rub it onto my face quite gently and this turns it from a gel into a foam, it expands a lot so always remember less is more! It has quite a 'manly' smell, of spices and warm flavours. Mrs B says it's quite strong and can smell it on me for a while afterwards, she says she doesn't mind the smell but that it's not the most beautiful!
It is easy to shave when using this, the razor cuts through it easily and gives quite a close shave resulting in as smooth an area as possible. Once I have shaved I wash my face and it feels quite fresh. Although I still get a slight shaving rash the gel hasn't caused any more irritation than normal.
I think it is a good shaving gel to use. I prefer it to foam as I think it lasts longer and it seems to be easier to apply in my opinion. This is good against sensitive skin and for £2 I think it's worth it.
At the time of buying this, I had just started shaving. This, along with some cheap store-brand razors was my equipment for my first time shaving.
Upon applying the gel, I noticed immediately that it foamed up extremely quickly and required little effort. I was very impressed. The gel proved a very smooth shave which made the experience a breeze. The razor, despite being cheap glided across my skin thanks to the gel and produced a nice clean shave.
The gel was extremely easy to wash off too.
I have used a variety of gels and foams since this and none have been as good at foaming up or washing off as quickly. The gel also does not irritate my skin as others do and prevented any burning which accompanies some other brands I have tried.
If left for a while, I have noticed that the gell liked to crawl up the spot a little which then needs to be wiped off. However the small amount which comes out does not have much of an impact on the lifetime of the can.
My friends and family all think I'm nuts, but I completely swear by shaving products aimed at men for the closest, smoothest shave. I tend to find that the shaving products aimed at women are all filled with silly, unnecessary scents and lotions that end up doing more harm than good. I really don't want anything too chemically or scented for when I'm taking a blade to my legs so after a good few years of searching for the perfect thing, I stumbled across Gillette Series Shave Gel for Sensitive Skin. Well, I say stumbled across it, I actually just had to steal it from my dad because I'd run out of my own products and didn't have time to run to Boots for more! It's been true love ever since...
The shave gel comes in a fairly big, pressurised metal can with a pump top cap. There is a small plastic lid to cover the pump so that there aren't any leaks or anything if you need to travel with it. It's not the kind of pump that you'd find on liquid soap, but the skooshy kind of pump that you'd find on deodorant - how do you like that for wording?
The front of the can explains that the gel contains aloe vera and offers triple protection for the skin whilst the back of the can goes into more detail and tells me that the triple protection is to avoid nicks, redness and tightness. The way I see it is if something is good enough to get a smooth shave on the rough, thick skin of a man then it should have no problem in aiding a smooth shave for my smooth skin.
Releasing the product couldn't be easier, just press down on the large grey pump area - perfect for slippy wet hands - and the clear blue gel will squirt out with ease. The scent instantly started filling my bathroom and I was actually very impressed with how it smelled. Again, something my friends think is really weird is that I love the smell of products aimed at men too. This is a very manly scent, but quite refreshing and light at the same time. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what it smells like, but I feel that anyone would recognise it.
You then simply rub the gel between yours hands and watch it transform into oodles and oodles of pale blue mousse. I didn't expect this the first time so I skooshed out loads of gel and ended up with enough mousse to coat my whole body! It takes a bit of practise to get the right amount, but you can always add more if need be - you don't want to waste any product.
Applying the mousse to my wet legs just proved how good quality it was as the bubbles didn't start disappearing as soon as it came into contact with water. Obviously it'd wash off under the stream of the shower, but popping my leg outside of the water stream was enough for the mousse to stay firmly in place. I carried on with my shaving routine and before I knew it, it was time to go dry my self off and lotion up!
I noticed that shaving was much easier with this gel as it has added lubrication to help the blade glide over your skin. I didn't have to go over certain areas two or three times like normal and I didn't nick the skin at all either (those pesky ankles!). I usually do suffer from a little bit of razor burn in certain areas, but I was left smooth and bump free after using this so the added aloe vera really worked with my skin type. I found that the scent subtly lingered on my skin but after moisturising it was completely gone. Although I do like the scent, I'm glad it was easily masked by my lotion as I'm not sure my boyfriend would be too thrilled at the idea of me smelling like a man.
I use this product everywhere that I shave and haven't had a problem with any sensitive areas or irritation, so that's always a bonus! I do find that I run out of this quite quickly though. It seems that the can goes from full to empty straight away, it's never just sitting in my bathroom half full. This is probably due to the light consistency of the gel, but it is kind of irritating when you think you have quite a bit left, go to use it and find out it's all gone. The can is slightly weighted too, so that doesn't help in guessing how much you have left.
I often find that after a week or two of using a new product my skin has some kind of reaction to it - especially on my shins. However this has had absolutely no ill effect and has left me with consistently smooth, fuzz free legs.
All in all I think it's a great little product and I'm glad I borrowed it from my dad when I did, it's made shaving take up much less time and left me with smoother skin and a closer shave than any other shaving gel or cream has every allowed me.
This shave gel is again, like most of my reviews, available from Boots. I bought it in a buy one get one free offer recently (April 2012) but I'm unsure if it's still going on in store. The 200ml can alone will cost £2.99 and is usually on some kind of offer - whether it's buy one get one free or 3 for 2.
The £2.99 price is great for such a high quality gel, even if it does feel like I'm always running out. I shave all over every 2-3 days (I have very fine, slow growing blonde hair so I don't need to do it any more often) and find that a can lasts me roughly 3 weeks.
I'm going to remove one star for how irritating it is to not know how much product is left, but it 100% deserves the four stars I'll be awarding it. I really recommend it to anyone with anything to shave!
Thanks for reading! All of my reads and rates are currently being saved for my trip to New York so I really appreciate it.
