Anyone who has read my reviews will know why I need to exercise and in think my avatar says it all. I have been a gym member at my local council run leisure centre for abut 8 years and have tried most things, spinning, aerobics, boxercise, pilates, yoga.... I have being doing Zumba classes for abut 3 years, I do at least 1 session a week but can do up to 3 depending on my shifts.
Zumba was created by colombian Alberto Perez in the 1990's and is a mixture of dance and exercise. It uses none traditional dance tracks, such as salsa and merenge. The choregraphy also includes bollywood, belly dancing, martial arts, mambo, samba, hip hop.... It seems to have really taken off in the last 2 years and the advertising on television has heightened its popularity. Its fan base includes Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham and Halle Berry.
Why I love it
Everytime I go to Zumba, I come out "dripping" not attractive I appreciate, but I know Ive had a really good calorie burning session. Its also really good fun as I find it completely random, going from bollywood to merenge to belly dancing. Everyone is too busy watching their own feet to care about yours and I have yet to find a class where my fellow class mates are taking it seriously, so I find I laugh a lot every session.
I try and exercise in some form between 3 to 5 times a week. If I don't enjoy a class, it gets one more chance and then I move on, as I have to enjoy in order to keep myself motivated. I feel almost like a guru on local classes and instructors. Clearly like anything, there are brilliant instructors and terrible ones (my membership covers 4 sites), I have found classes and instructors who I enjoy and so every class for me is fun. Therefore its easy to see the quality of zumba instruction is very variable.
My membership covers all my classes, but I think the price for a class ranges from £3-£5.
I do have a Zumba wii video but much prefer my Zumba class. Although the moves are there, for me the fun of it wasn't.
There is a wide range of little Zumba outfits out there and although I think the instructors look good in their Zumba items, I personally go in my old tracky bottoms and its unusual to see others in the Zumba logo gear.
Zumba gold is a slower version and aimed at those older or new to exercise. Although I have accidentally done this class and there was still a wide range of ages and I didnt feel out of place, however I did "drip" as much!
Im given this a 4. Purely because you do need to find a good instructor and I have had my share of not so good ones.
