When it comes to my Christmas dinner its actually my favourite meal of the year! I have always loved it, only ever eaten my Mums offering and although in my opinion she is a horrific cook she always manages to make it amazing thank goodness!
For me a traditional Christmas dinner is one of turkey and all the trimmings covered in bread sauce and I wouldn't touch my turkey unless it had cranberry sauce to go with it! To me its an essential condiment and one my mum always makes sure she has out on the table for me or I wouldn't be a happy bunny!
Well this year we had the 'Wholefruit' variety of cranberry sauce however it does actually come available to buy in different varieties such as smooth. The jar ours came in holds 250g of the sauce and the jar is roundish in shape and glass with a dark red twist on/off lid to the top of it. Around the main of the jar there is a label and on that we are told that it is Ocean Spray Cranberry Wholeberry Sauce 'The Uk's original cranberry sauce' and there is a picture shown of some cranberries too. On the back of the jar other information listed includes ingredients (this is suitable for Vegetarians and people with Gluten intolerances by the way), the size is stated, there is a nutritional chart listed and contact details for the manufacturer are given. Nice, racy to open and informative enough jar this is.
The Sauce Itself:
Well this is referred to as a sauce which in my opinion if someone has never had it is rather misleading! This is more of a dark red, thick and set jam more than a sauce with visible (and lots of it) thick chunks of mashed up cranberries within it. It doesn't have much of a fragrance to it at all and although 'set' it is easy to get out of the jar.
In appearance it looks a nice rich colour, it doesn't melt too badly on warm/hot food and taste wise is sweet, nicely sharp and fruity. This only contains sugar, cranberries and water so is a rather natural 'sauce' and I do like that theres plenty of fruit within it which compliments white meat beautifully however I do find that has rather alot of cranberry skins in it which I'm not so keen on as they are rather chewy.
However the flavours of this natural tasting sauce is nice and you can't fault its quality and for me its a brand I trust!
Nutritional Information Per 100g:
of which sugars: 32.8g
of which saturates: 0.10g
Available in all good supermarkets etc priced at about £1.00 a jar.
I just love Cranberry sauce, it is a food you either love or loathe and mine is love it. It is a sauce that I usually only eat at Christmas time because not that many of my family members like it as much as I do and so I don't stock this one in my cupboards very often.
It comes in a transparent glass jar with a screw of lid. It has just the label on the front with a picture of Cranberries. The jar is a nice chunky one and one that is easy to grab hold of and not drop it. It is a nice jar to serve the sauce and it does look fine on the table. I usually just spoon some into a serving dish so that it looks much nicer on the table for my guests.
The sauce is a nice red colour and it is not a runny consistency. It is quite soft and smooth but it does not drip from the spoon when spooning it out of the jar etc. the texture is soft eaten with the food on the plate. It is a sauce that is eaten with turkey. It gives for a nice taste eaten with the turkey in my opinion. It does look nice on the plate too.
It does have a kind of sweet taste to it but it is not bland or too sweet or sickly. It is just a nice tasting sauce. I find it is not at all bitter. It does smell of cranberries and is quite a strong smell. It is very apparent immediately the jar is opened. It is not an unpleasant smell if you are not keen on cranberries. If you do not like the sauce very much and just prefer a small amount on the plate I do not think it is an unpleasant taste.
I bought it on offer recently for only a £1 from Tesco's. I bought it for Christmas but I couldn't resist opening the jar and I started to use it immediately lol. The jar will probably last until Christmas but I will buy another jar so that it is fresh for my guest for their Christmas dinner. Once opened the sauce must be eaten within 28 days but placed in the fridge to keep it nice and fresh. If unopened it can be kept in a cupboard for a couple of years as it has a very good use by date of which it tells the date on the top of the lid.
It is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It also free from gluten, artificial sweeteners, colours and flavours.
The one I have is the wholeberry sauce, it is also available in cranberry smooth or cranberry and redcurrant. The wholeberry does have a few tiny pips but not as many as a jar would contain. They are very few in the jar. I really love the taste of this one, I have eaten it with chicken a few times recently because I have not cooked any turkey recently but I have found it taste just as nice with the chicken as it does the turkey in my opinion. I think it is a nice poultry sauce and one that I love. It helps give the dish an extra kick. I actually like the taste of savoury food and sweet eaten together and this sauce does give for a nice combination of the foods eaten together.
It is kind of like a relish but just a little thicker in my opinion but it is not like a jelly etc, it is just a nice smooth sauce with an excellent taste. I think even if you do not like the taste of cranberries this one is worth a try because eaten with meat it makes for a nice addition on the plate.
It does contain per 100g 152 calories, 0.3g of fat of which 0.3g of saturates.
The jar can also be recycled after use. The bottle size is 250g and so quite a large jar in my opinion and one that will last for the length of time opened and left in the fridge.
I would most definitely recommend this sauce for your Christmas dinner this year. I think it is a nice tasting sauce and one that tastes very nice with chicken too. Ocean Spray is a nice brand and also the sauce is a good quality and excellent value for the money in my opinion. It gives me all the taste that I expect from this brand.
I give it 5 stars.
Also on Ciao under my username Pinky50.
Thank you for reading my review and I hope it has been of some help.
It's SO cold today here in Cheshire & I've been keeping warm doing loads of sorting/tidying/cleaning in the house & then cooling off by sorting out the fridge! I was really pleased to find a jar of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce in there & thought it would be nice to pop it in a sandwich with some cold chicken - I miss my Christmas food.
The sauce looks exactly as shown in the Dooyoo picture & the glass jar is of a good quality so I'll be re-using it no doubt to store some herbs in when finished.
The top was a little difficult to undo & I was surprised not to be able to smell any cranberries but it's a lovely deep red colour & initially the texture looked good. I say initially because once I'd taken a spoonful off the top I was disappointed to find that it was rather watery & a bit syrupy - in fact I ended up emptying the lot into a bowl, stirring well & then re-filling the jar.
Saying that though I was pleased with the taste which was a little sweet but the overall flavour was that of the (30%) North American cranberries. The (final) texture was also good - easy to spread & seemingly full of fruit.
Although it states on the jar that there are no added flavourings or preservatives there is glucose, fructose syrup, water & sugar so it's not 100% natural & I actually do prefer my home-made cranberry sauce.
I only needed a tablespoon to transform my (otherwise totally boring) chicken sandwich into something a little more special & because I didn't put butter on the bread I felt this was a healthier way of eating my lunchtime snack.
I'd recommend trying Ocean Spray if you like c/sauce as I've tried a lot worse & in my book 59p for 100g is pretty good value - just be prepared to give it a good mix before eating otherwise you may end up with a very dry mouth (all cranberry) or a very sweet one (from the syrup).
So with the big day being only a week away now this weekend will no doubt be hell on earth in town centres and supermarkets with shoppers buying presents and starting their huge food shop for the festive season. Being reasonably organised in the Rooster household we have been buying various bits and bobs in ready for Christmas including all our pickles and sauces. Cranberry sauce is a must have item for Christmas dinner and although there are cheaper alternatives available we always buy the Ocean Spray variety.
Contained in a glass jar designed similarly to the picture above you can see the deep red sauce through the clear glass. I am informed that my jar contains no artificial flavourings, colours or preservatives and that is confirmed in the list of ingredients that advise that the contents are 30% North American Cranberries, Glucose-fructose syrup, water and sugar.
Opening the screw top greets the eye with a deep red jelly like sauce, there is no smell evident and putting your knife into the jar to scoop the contents out you notice that the consistency is thick and not at all runny, my Cranberry sauce is the 'smooth' variety so the colour and texture is flat just like jelly.
Traditionally served with Turkey I tend to add Cranberry sauce with all cold meats at this time of the year even if I'm having a ham sandwich. The taste is fruity and sweet and adds a different taste to the normally savoury meat, Turkey for me is quite a bland and dry meat so I always make sure I add plenty of Cranberry sauce with it just to give it extra flavour and it's a must have for the boxing day turkey sandwiches that always seem to be made with the leftovers.
I have tried the cheaper alternatives in the past but have always been left disappointed, the depth of flavour isn't the same as Ocean Sprays' and other sauces tend to have hard bits left it presumably pieces of stalk or pips. At only 97p though for a 100 gram jar from Tesco this is hardly likely to break the bank and is a Christmas time must have sauce for me.
I do rate this very highly and would certainly recommend it to anyone who finds turkey to be a bit of a bland meat, it does add sweetness and lifts the flavour and is perfect for the leftovers. For me, Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce rates a perfect 5/5 Dooyoo star rating. Good luck to those doing their food shopping this weekend and next week, don't forget your sauces!
We all love cranberry sauce in our house and don't just eat it at Xmas because it's wicked on so many different foods, including brie and bacon sandwiches so this is a sauce you should deffo experiment with.
Today I'm reviewing the SMOOTH version of Ocean Spray's cranberry sauce because this is the one we've got in the fridge at the minute. I'll say now though, it's identical to the one that has got the whole cranberries in it but just smooth with a bit of a jam consistency.
I love Ocean Spray sauce because it's so fresh tasting, it's lovely and sweet with a wicked natural cranberry flavour. Because this one is smooth you can either dollop it on the side of your plate or just spread it across the top of the meat. I love having this with turkey or chicken and stuffing in a baguette because I think it brings out the poultry flavour wicked.
I reckon it's simply cranberry jam being as it's so smooth. It looks like jam, feels like jam and has the same sort of sweet taste as jam! lol It's a con!! They're selling jam as cranberry sauce! lol This spreads really easy using a knife and that makes it dead good for adding to gravy as well because it's so smooth it will mix in easy with the hot gravy.
It gives the gravy a lovely sweet and fruity flavour and I reckon everyone cooking a Xmas dinner should use some of this to liven their gravy up because it will go proper nice with the turkey.
The only thing with Ocean Spray is that I think all their cranberry sauce is a bit too sweet. Some of the other brands are a bit tangy and they should be because cranberries have got quite a sour flavour and they shouldn't be madly sweet like this sauce.
I reckon if you're looking for a cranberry sauce that hasn't got big pieces of cranberry in then this should be the one you go for. The smooth texture of it is perfect for most occasions and I reckon this sauce will make a perfefct addition to the Xmas dinner table.
With Christmas approaching fast, I thought I would get one of my cupboards cleared out so it could become the XMAS cupboard. I usually start about this time of year so that each week I can start to collect the traditional goodies that we all seem to think we need at this time of year!
Every year after Xmas I say" I'm not buying all this next year ", as tins of biscuits, tubs of different crisps and nuts, jars and bottles all stand untouched seeing us through until the spring ( If the dates long enough that is).
Now one thing that always goes fast is the Cranberry Sauce, as turkey isn't turkey without a large dollop on your plate staining the lovely white turkey a hint of pink!!!
Now our favourite one is the Mulled Wine version that Ocean Spray do. As well as tasting really lovely it contains a lot of antioxidants which is good for you as well. This one comes in a small chunky glass jar that you could hold in the palm of your hand quite easily. This has a gold meal screw on lid with a gold label that goes all the way round the jar with a picture of cranberries on the front.
This sauce is a very deep red colour and is of a jelly constistency. I think what makes this taste different from the other sauces is probably the spices that are in this which are Ginger, Cassia and Nutmeg. When you taste this with your turkey you can really taste these spices which gives it a bit of a punch!
The ingredients in this are;
~~~North American Cranberries (43%)~~~
~~~Red Wine (3%)~~~
with the nutrition info for 100g;
~~~of which are sugars 55.0g~~~
Antidoxidants (Total Phenolics) 150mg
You can also buy this in 4 other flavours which are Smooth, Extra Fruit, Wholeberry and Organic.This comes in a 190g jar.
Most people think that cranberry sauce is something that is just used at the dinner table, but it can be put into different recipes to give you wow factor!!
For example add some of this to a cheese toasted sandwich or pop some into a chicken wrap. This can also be added to a Summer pudding and tastes great in a Quiche. I have tried all these recipes in the past and it really makes a lovely difference to the dish. There are some good ideas on their webpage and I still have more to try.
I'm not to sure how much this costs as this particular one seems to be one that you can only buy at Xmas, so it should be in the shops anytime now!
Usually they seem to be on one sort of offer or another, this is the one item that I won't cut back on as it a very good quality sauce and you do get what you pay for when it comes to these sort of things I believe!!
So back to sorting out the Xmas cupboard and no doubt again next year I will still be saying "I'm not buying that next year!!!"
A big fat 5 stars for this!!!!
When I ran the London Marathon, we were given two goody bags - one when we registered and collected our running number, and one when we staggered over the finishing line. Those bags contained various things, from energy bars, through to a can of beer (not sure where that fits in the fit and healthy image of the Marathon - it must be something to do with the social side of the event and all the spectators out on the street!)....but one of the things that was in my goody bag was a jar of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce.
Ocean Spray is a brand that is synonymous with cranberries - cranberry juice, dried cranberries and cranberry sauce are all popular Ocean Spray products. This sauce is actually manufactured by F Duerr & Son Ltd, the excellent jam-makers, so it has a bit of a pedigree behind it!
This cranberry sauce contains just cranberries, sugar, and water.....simple, and just like making homemade but without the effort! It is gluten free and suitable for both vegetarians and vegans, so it ticks plenty of boxes. Cranberries are also a bit of a superfood, packed with anti-oxidants, so a very healthy little berry there.
The sauce is not so much a sauce, more a sloppy jam. The cranberries are generally whole berries, so you get a lot of substance in each spoonful. The colour is a wonderful, urm, well, cranberry-colour.....deep red and it looks genuine, if you know what I mean ie it doesn't look to be artificially enhanced in any way (which the ingredients confirm, which is good!).
The sauce itself is deliciously fruity and sweet, but not over-sweet. It works really well on the side of the plate for turkey and chicken, and if you have lamb but no redcurrant sauce, you can sneakily substitute this sauce in a label-less jar, or pot, and no one will bat an eyelid!
My favourite way of using this sauce, however, is in sandwiches with brie. Or even better, with brie and bits of almost-but-not-quite-crispy bacon. Ooh my mouth is starting to water just at the thought of one of these beauties....especially on malted bread.....yum!!!
There is little point in worrying about calories etc when you are only looking at a dollop or so of sauce, but if you really really want to know, then half a jar (which would be a whopper of a dollop) gives 156 calories and absolutely no saturated fat, so a spoonful with your roast dinner is hardly going to have an impact, calorie wise, on your day!
Keep this in the fridge once open, but use it fairly quickly if you can. Although it has a long "use by" date, in my experience, it will develop a fur coat if you don't use it once it has been opened for a few weeks.....and it would be a shame to waste it.
All in all, a great little pot of juiciness to add a bit of sweetness and yumminess to your food.
