      a great range of easy to cook curry sauces

      Ooh I love these . We had the Korma version for dinner over the weekend, and the best thing is, I thought they had disappeared: We managed to find some in Home Bargains at a reduced price (sorry I don't know how much because my other half picked up the bill!) I always used to get them from the supermarkets but they seem to have stopped having them in lately, I don't know why. This sauce comes in two parts, and the two jars are held together securely in a tightly wrapped plastic seal in order that you can get it home in one piece. If you have never used one of these before, I would recommend that you are very careful when you are removing this wrapper: I found out too late that it has the instructions printed on it, the first time I used this :) The first jar, the smaller one on the top, is the 'sizzle' part: It's actually a paste, darker brown and glossier in colour than the rest of the recipe, which you add in a wide pan to the meat you are using, and 'sizzle' it, i.e. brown it and seal all the edges. It is actually quite noisy, although not that bad! This paste is really fragranced too, taking a good deep sniff causes your nose to itch. You can detect loads of sweet and hot spices here. After a few minutes of this, you tip in the contents of the second, larger jar that was on the bottom. This is the 'stir' part. Basically, once this is added, give it a quick stir, then you can turn the heat down and go and watch telly for around ten minutes. The second sauce is much lighter, it's bright yellow and is quite radioactive looking, hehehe, it is also runnier and designed to be 'reduced down'. It splatters a lot too, even on a low heat, so I found that you need a pan with a lid to protect yourself - and so you don't end up having to clean the whole kitchen. It still smells very highly spiced, but this time it's lighter - you can also smell the gorgeous coconut milk in there that lightens it up and takes the edge off the spices. These are mainly designed for chicken but you can use any meat you like I suppose. We actually used Quorn pieces because I am vegetarian and it was easier for us all to share the same dish. (The carnivores in the family swear they can't tell, once the sauce is on it, lol) If you finish the cooking a little early, you leave yourself a bit of extra runniness which can be used for dipping a naan bread into, yum yum. We had this dish just served on plain boiled rice. Overall I would say that this is a great, convenient curry sauce mix, although I can tell that it contains quite a lot of oil. You certainly don't need to add extra cooking oil to the pan. Recommended to spice fans!

        i love the knorr korma sauce, i eat it all the time with some side lettuce and lemon added on top its most delightful, i think it is the best money can buy on the market today!!

        2 stage Balti sauce

        Having some chicken in the fridge that needed to be used up, I scoured my cupboards for something to go with it. I’m terrible for buying loads of these cook-in sauces that are around so much lately – I always have one half of the cupboard lined up with jars of Bolognese, Spanish chicken and curry sauces waiting to be used. I came across a jar of Knorr sizzle and stir Balti, which was bought a few months ago and forgotten about, and decided to use it up. ~About the product~ What makes this different from your regular jar of curry sauce, is that it comes in two separate jars. The first one is a paste which is heated up before adding the chicken, and the second jar contains the sauce mix. There are several different products in the sizzle and stir range, including Tikka Massala, Korma, and Bhuna. ~Packaging~ The two jars are packaged together, the smaller of the two on top of the larger one, with a shrink wrapping holding the together. There is a picture of the finished product on the front, but I have to say this looks nothing like the finished article – in fact the picture appears to have peas and what looks like a chunk of red pepper in it – neither of which ingredients are actually found in this! The jars are opened, by tearing a seal on the side of the shrink wrap, and this comes off easily, without tearing the wrapping to the point where you can’t read the instructions, as has happened to me with various other products in the past. On the subject of instructions, although using this is not rocket science, the instructions are laid out clearly and simply on the back of the jar. ~My Experience~ The first step in making this is to spoon the paste into a cold frying pan or non-stick wok- there is no need to use oil, as the paste is vegetable oil based. As soon as you open the smaller jar you are hit by a strong, spicy curry smell, which I have to say was very tempting. The instructions state to heat this over a high heat, which I did, and as the paste heats up, it reduces down into an oil. Once the oil begins to sizzle, simply add 3-4 sliced chicken breasts and stir-fry. Again I followed these instructions, but the oil (which was extremely hot) splashed onto my hand, and burnt it quite badly, so I ended up standing with one hand under the tap, while trying to reach over to the cooker with the other hand to stir the chicken! Once the chicken is cooked, the second step is to simply add the second jar, which is the sauce. Easy enough, but no matter how hard I tried, I could not get the lid off! Now, I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily strong, but I can usually manage to open a jar on my own – this thing however would not budge. I spent at least 10 minutes (yes, really) trying to open the thing – although as one hand was burnt and painful it was making it pretty difficult! I eventually ended up forcing it with a knife, which in hindsight was pretty dangerous, and I probably should have just left it and had a sandwich instead! Anyway, by the time I had managed to get the flaming lid off, despite having turned the heat down, the paste had started to burn onto the bottom of the pan. I added the sauce anyway, and as per the instructions heated it up for five minutes. The finished result looked quite good, although saying that, was much darker in colour than I would have expected – probably due to the extra length of time it was in the pan! ~Taste~ I have to say, despite all the pain and effort this was worth it! Balti is a tomato and onion based sauce, and the flavours came through without it being too heavy, as some of the creamier sauces can be. I don’t tend to like curry to be too hot, and I would say this was just about right for me, but for anyone who likes their dish to be very spicy I would say this is probably too mild. Also it may be worth pointing out, that although I can’t see anywhere on the packing to indicate how many people this serves once finished, I would say two adults is probably about right – although perhaps if you put it with rice or another accompaniment it might stretch further. ~Nutritional Info (per 100g)~ Calories: 118kcal Carbohydrate: 6.7g Protein: 1.0g Fat: 9.7g ~Other Info~ Once cooked, the product is suitable for home freezing. The sauce is suitable for vegetarians – but obviously you will have to find an alternative to chicken! I got mine from Somerfield for £1.89 on a buy one get one free offer, although Asda sells it for £1.58. I think that is slightly on the expensive side for one meal, but I will certainly look out for special offers. Saying that, it’s cheaper than a takeaway, just as good, and at least you know that it hasn’t come from a rat infested kitchen! ~Overall Verdict~ Despite the mishaps during cooking this, it hasn’t put me off – although next time I will make sure both jars are open before I start cooking! Also it is a very quick meal and simple to make – if you don’t waste ten minutes running the jar under a hot tap/bashing it off the kitchen counter etc trying to open than damned thing! Taste wise, I thought this was lovely, and I will buy it again. So far this is one of the best curry sauces I have bought, and I would definitely recommend it!

          More convenient than a takeaway.

          At least once a week my boyfriend starts to whine "let's have a curry...I want a curry...We haven't had OUR curry in ages.." Yes, a whole 6 days since we had a curry. Using the word 'our' will not give it the traditional sharing, caring, important aspect of Christmas or Easter - curry night is not a festival that requires me to observe it. I like curry, don't get me wrong, but just lately it seems a hassle. The boyfriend is particular about curry. It has to be from the curry house on the Henley Road because they use 'proper chicken'; we have to think about it carefully, discuss it, find a menu before ordering; it has to come with several side orders - 1 aloo saag, meat samosa; onion bhaji, naan bread; we must tip the delivery man, or he will hate us and spit in our next order. My issue with this is not my beloved boyfiend. It might seem this way, but I find his little habits endearing (and he damn well better feel the same way!!). I understand regarding the chicken, but I am vegetarian. I know what I fancy, be it biryani, jalfrezi or rogan josh within minutes. The side orders send the price sky high and it would surely be about £30 if we went and ate it at a restaurant, why am I paying that to eat from a tray? I don't like the delivery man. Asif, if you're reading this then I'm sorry, but if you turned your car stereo off and said hello - then I'd tip you. Tonight I sneakily fancied curry. Of the homemade variety. I wanted a curry that wouldn't be greasily swimming in orange oil, wouldn't be hit-and-miss oversalted, wouldn't necessitate a second mortgage. Lo and behold I found a jar of Sizzle 'n Stir Tikka Masala in the cupboard. Using Quorn chicken pieces and some bin-dodging veg, I sizzled 'n stirred my way to a really nice curry in under half an hour. Knorr have an impressive range going. The Knorr brand now includes Chicken Tonight, Beef Tonight, Ragu, Sizzle n Stir, Stir it Up and Touch of Taste products. They are owned by the larger Unilever company now, but have been going since 1873. I haven't really tried these products since my student days and I was surprised by the slightly synthestic taste of the Sizzle 'n Stir. It was a bit grainy. The Sizzle 'n Stir comes in two pots, joined together by a plastic wrapper. This is a little annoying as you tear through the two step instructions by removing the label. Luckily these aren't complicated! The small pot of paste (which you can excavate only with a teaspoon!) is heated until it sizzles, at which point you add the chicken - this turned the Quorn a lurid shade of red. Neon curry still looks appetising though. I part cooked the veg and then stuck it into the frying pan and added the second jar. Because quorn has a tendency to absorb a lot more liquid than meat, the sauce probably wasn't as runny as it should be. However, the overall effect was very nice. I am keen not to give my Dad salty or fatty food. The Sizzle 'n Stir turns out to contain 16.6g fat and 0.68 sodium. I'm not sure if these values are after cooking with chicken or just the sauce on its own, the packet doesn't offer much direction on this. There are people paid to satisfy your curiosity on a whole renge of ready made food products. I served this curry up with Uncle Ben's microwave Pilau Rice and some buttered bread. This was an indisputable hit and Dad and I thoroughly enjoyed it. That's two plates and a saucepan's worth of evidence to wash up before the boyfriend bounds through the door. I've even had time to write this review. It may not be 100% authentic, but it fully delivers on convenience. I got this on special offer, 2 for £1.50 a while back. Knorr seem to have struck a delicate balance. Compared to other curry sauces I've tried, Sizzle 'n Stir is not overloaded with mouth burning chili peppers, not sickly sweet. It's just hot enough to be curry and still retain its taste. Sharwoods are second best and then I kind of like the flavours best when mixed together. You can spot it in the supermarket by its pretty green and turquoise packaging, the glass jars have gone in the dishwasher for re-use. I'm going to use the small one for night lights to put on the patio in summer, the larger one for flowers. If anyone has any curry jokes that are not related to song titles, I'd love to hear them!

            Product: Knorr Sizzle n' Stir (Korma and Balti varieties) Price: Around £1.89 (although i got 2 for this price as they were on special offer) Serves: Two Intro: ------- I've tried many many curry-in-a-jar type efforts lately and have largely been disappointed. They are usually either too hot or too sweet, or too salty. I've never been able to capture that proper restaurant curry taste (although maybe it's more the alcohol-fuelled atmosphere that adds to going out for a curry than the food itself!). Packaging: ------------- The packaging is very different to normal products of this type, as it consists of two jars of sauce held together by a plastic wrapper. This is good because it avoids any problems of spillage (a la sachets) and it's secure so you're unlikely to find that they have separated in your shopping bag. It's also cool because the smaller jar is very cute (don't ask me why, i think I'm a bit strange) I have washed mine out and it is now awaiting a useful purpose. Product: ----------- The idea of the two jars is that you fry the meat (I used chicken breast fillets) in the richer sauce in the smaller jar, which contains special spices and oils, to give it flavour, then you cook it in the korma sauce in the big jar to give the curry sauce. Apparently this makes the curry "more authentic", since the meat willbe more infused with flavour than if you have simply cooked it in a sauce. So i opened the little jar, spooned it into the pan, and was rather surpised to find that it looked like what i can only describe as glitter glue. The oil was all shiny and it had all separated out, so i felt like decorating my christmas cards with it (the smell put me off!). however, it did smell tasty, and coated the chicken nicely. An advantage of this is that i didnt have to use any other oils, although i did suspect that there was more oil in there t han i would have used without, making it rather unhealthy. The same went for the balti version, which looked and smelt identical. I think that in fact the spices are probably the same for each variety, and they just change the sauce in the big jar (aha! Knorr have been rumbled with their money-saving schemes!) Once the chicken was cooked through, i then poured in the korma sauce. This also smelt lovely, although it did look a bit odd (a bright yellow colour). The same with the balti, although that did at least look like something edible. So, now for the taste test. Korma: This was nice at first, having an authentic korma taste, although i did find it a little sweet (not in a "Dude Where's My Car?" kind of way...) and sickly after a while. I think that's due to the fact that I'm not a great fan of Korma. I did find the taste a little artificial though, as if too much sugar had been put in deliberately to pacify those who don't really like curry that much. It was definitely edible though, and people who do like Korma a lot would probably really like it (my boyfriend did). So, 3/5 for the Korma. Balti: Now this is more like it - a curry which is actually tasty and hot. Hard as it is to believe, finding a curry which is edible and spicy is nigh on impossible in the supermarket. most of them are either so hot you can't taste anything, or it will taste like it was only allowed to look at the spices before being put into the jar. But no, this curry was tasty, and just the right "heat". The spiciness wasn't off-putting, but simply added to the taste. It still had that artificial aftertaste though, so 4/5 for the blati version. Conclusion: ------------- The novelty value of the tiny jar might wear off after a while, so how does the end result compare to other curries in jars? Well, for the extra 30p or so, it's not that much better than others that you can get (Sharwood's for example, are very good without all the messing about with separate jars) and the environmental issues of having separate jars make it a little dubious. however, the standard of curry was very good,a dn i did like the idea of frying the chicken is the "glitter glue" first as it made me forget that i was cooking convenience food. The taste was good, but again, not that much better than the others, even with all the hassle. So, if this is on special offer i would recommend grabbing a couple of jars, otherwise stick to the other kind. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all by the way! :o)
