When my son was starting his second year at pre-school nursery, we went on the hunt for a suitable bag for him to take with him. His Thomas the Tank bag from the previous nursery year was starting to look a bit battered so a new one was required. Unable to decide on a suitable bag from the local shops, we had a browse of Amazon and Boo fell in love with a Postman Pat backpack. His Daddy is a Postman so you can understand the connection there!
~Postman Pat Backpack==
There are a few different designs of Postman Pat backpack available but I will be discussing the 'Postman Pat Come On Jess Arch Backpack' which is offered by Trade Mark collections.
This backpack is made from a wipe clean surface. It is suitable for children over the age of 36months and 100% official Postman Pat merchandise. The dimensions of the bag are 12 x 9.5 x 5 inches. This particular backpack has two compartments which are accessed via zips. There are two adjustable shoulder straps for comfort. This backpack is mainly navy and features different scenes from the show. It is also printed with 'Come on Jess! We've got a Special Delivery'.
~Price and Availability~
This backpack is currently available on Amazon priced at £7.75. This includes free super saver delivery. www.thingimijigs.co.uk also has it in stock priced at £7.99.
My son was immediately taken by this bag as soon as he spotted it on Amazon. I ordered it right away and I'm sure I paid about £4.00 for it as it was reduced. It arrived in a simple plastic packaging and smelled very fresh and new. My son was keen to test it out and it has been used for nursery and various outings several times a week for the past 6 months.
This backpack is marketed as being suitable for school and I think it is just a nice size for Primary one where children don't have a massive amount of jotters or books to carry around. Boo uses it mainly for transporting his trainers and a spare change of clothing for nursery. When he isn't at nursery, the backpack is used for transporting an array of character toys, cars and trains to his grandparents home to play with.
Design wise this backpack is very attractive and eyecatching. Fans of Postman Pat will appreciate how good it looks. The back of the backpack is navy with red trim. The front is a light blue with lots of printed images including Pats van, his helicopter and PC Selbys police car. There are a few pictures at the top of the backpack illustrating Pat and Jess out in the van, on their motorbike and flying in the helicopter. The largest design is on the front compartment and is a smily Pat and Jess. The design is good and not too cluttered. It is easy to spot this backpack in a sea of jackets and bags in the nursery.
This backpack is incredibly spacious. The main compartment zip allows the backpack to be opened half way up. The interior of the backpack is a mix of PVC and fabric. The front compartment is also accessed by a zip. Both compartments are perfectly sized to fit various things. My son can easily fit some books, little toys and a drink/snack in it whilst the front compartment is perfect for little characters, some coins or some sweets if we are out an about. The bag is also the perfect size for fitting some trousers, shoes and a small sandwich container in with room to spare. On a few occasions we have had the need to put my sons wellington boots in the bag and find that they fit neatly in without bulging.
The backpack is made from a good quality fabric and well manufactured in my opinion. There is no stitching flaws and the backpack doesn't seem to strain or have the potential to burst open when my son fills it up with things to take out with him. There is a little U shaped fabric handle at the back of the backpack which is perfectly sized for a young child to hold and carry comfortably. My son prefers to carry this backpack on his back though and this is very easy to do.
Whilst not the thickest of shoulder straps, they straps are nicely padded and my son finds it easy to put the backpack on himself. He has never complained of any discomfort from wearing the backpack. There is quite a lot of room for adjustment with the shoulder straps and I have adjusted the length of the straps over the past few months as my son has grown so much in 6 months. There is still a lot of room for adjustment and I would imagine this backpack would be suitable for an older child to wear up until age 7 but this depends on their height and build. At the moment the backpack sits comfortably on my sons back and doesn't droop or look like it is going to fall off.
This backpack is very easy to wipe down should it get a little dirty. On the occasions where we have taken it to the park and it has been in contact with the grass or dirt, I just give it a wipe down with a damp cloth. The backpack doesn't show dirt easily and is simple to maintain. We have been out in the rain with this backpack and have never experienced any dampness inside. It seems to be made to withstand the elements which is always a positive. There has been no fading or scratches to the illustrations.
Despite having had a lot of use this backpack still looks very new. It is of a high quality and very well made. My son isn't exactly gentle when it comes to opening and closing the zips but they have remained strong and well attatched to the material. My son really likes his Postman Pat backpack as it is the perfect size for all the things he insists on taking out with him and is great for nursery. For the price we paid we are very pleased with how good it is and can highly recommend this backpack to all Postman Pat fans.
