My husband and I and the kids have a dog so we often go out for walks in the forest/country and take a picnic with us. We carry our food and bits in a really comfortable backpack, the Osprey Talon 22. The backpack is not amazingly big so this would not be a good one for many days hiking/camping but for an afternoon out this is the perfect bag. It's lightweight but still roomy enough to fit everything in.
The bag features a big zipped pocket at the front which basically takes up most of the bag. Then, at the top there is another zipped pocket which is mesh lined so it doesn't take up too much space at the top of the bag but I find this the most handy part of the bag. As it's only smallish I put keys and little pocket packs of tissues in it, things like that that I know we will need on our walk and that I will need to get to quickly without having to hunt through the main portion of the bag.
At the back of the backpack there is a hydration slot. We don't have one of those water bags that then have a little plastic straw from them so you can sip whilst jogging but it's nice to know that this section is there should you need it. If I did jog or run this would probably be the perfect backpack for that so it's good to know you can attach a hydration unit to it. If you're more like me and like to carry a bottle of water around for hydration there are handy little fabric slot pockets on each side of the backpack that are deep enough to slot a water bottle in and it will stay there without falling out.
The overarm straps on the bag are really comfortable. In my opinion they have been designed really well as they lay flat against your chest in a really comfortable position and are slightly padded so even if the bag is quite heavy the straps do not feel really tight or cumbersome. The straps have a plastic buckle each side so you can attach it accross your chest by clipping each side together and also across your waist as well. This means you can either wear your bag the "cool" way, slung over one shoulder or you can wear it properly, over both shoulders and done up around middle and at waist too so the weight is distributed perfectly and you do not end up with an aching back after carrying this bag. The straps are adjustable which is nice so both my husband and I can wear it but to be honest if we're out together I usually make him carry it most of the time!!
To quote some specifications from the website, the bag also has ice axe loops and a tow loop. There are two different sizes, S/M: Volume: 20 litres/Weight: 790g. M/L: Volume: 22 litres/Weight: 810g. We have the small which is perfect for us. What I like about the bag is that it comes in various colours too. We have it in a really nice lightish blue colour but you can also get green, black, purple and red.
The bag costs in the £75 region and is a backpack I definitely recommend.
