The Wellington is a fish and chip restaurant and take away just 250 yards from the sea front in Ayr. (t has been open since 1968 and is a family run establishment. 100-102 Sandgate Ayr KA7 1BX The eat in area allows seating for up to 50 people in the form of booth tables. There is a table service and you are given a fairly extensive menu of meals and snacks to choose from. The dining area is very compact and there isn't enough room to manouver a pram or wheelchair let alone have space for a high chair. The restaurant is clean and tidy and the waitress was friendly each time we have dined here. The take away area is seperated from the main dining area and is simply a glossy black counter and tiled waiting area. Food is dished up, wrapped in paper and bagged for convenience. The food choice and prices are displayed on a lit up area above the counter. The food choice is pretty much the same for take away and dining it though I would say there is a small extra charge added on when you are sitting in. Children are catered for with smaller sized portions for around £3.00. The main focus is on fried foods. There is a whole host of suppers to choose from including battered fish, sausages, fish cakes, individual steak pies, scampi and pizza served with fresh made chips. Other meal options include lasagne and curry. Suppers are reasonably priced from £3.50 ish up to £6.50 ish. There are various canned and bottled drinks available and hot drinks (takeaway and sit in). *~*Dining At The Wellington*~* We try to visit Ayr twice a year and always fancy fish and chips when we do. The Wellington was recommended to me by my parents who always dine here when they visit Ayr. Earlier in the year we experience the Wellington for the first time. During the Summer, we returned again and it was nice enough to eat outside so we used the take away this time. The restaurant itself is nice to look at from the outside. When we were dining in, we had a pram with us and they kindly allowed us to go around the side of the restaurant and leave the pram in the kitchen which was nice of them. The service was quick and it was quite quiet when we arrived at midday. We dined as a group of 4 adults and 4 children so did take up a lot of space! The menu is what you would expect from a chip shop and very easy to read. I had already decided to have a fish and chips and as my Mum wanted this too, we went for the larger meal. I believe this was around £7.95 and you got 2 big bits of fish, lots of chips, bread and butter, peas and a hot drink. This is a good price and the portion was huge! The fish had a delicious light batter which had a nice texture inside and the fish itself was flaky and very fresh. The chips were delicious. Fresh made and light and fluffy. The meal wasn't too greasy and there was enough for both me and my Mum. I ordered a tub of curry sauce which was full of flavour and perfect for dipping my chips into. My fiance and sister both opted for a sausage supper each. The portions were substantial for an adult with 2 large sausages. The sausages were of a high quality, thick and nicely battered and plenty of those delicious chips. The 2 older kids decided on sausage and chips as well and the kids portions were still a good size and would be far too big for a younger child. My nephew decided he wanted a bit of everything so a spare plate was brought for him. My son is fussy and wanted a roll with chips which he enjoyed. For 3 adults meals, 2 childrens meals, a roll and chips and several drinks, our bill came to around £38 which I find reasonable for 8 of us. The food was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was prompty and friendly so top marks all round. I did get to have a peek at the kitchen when collecting our pram and it appeared clean. *~*Take Away*~* Our last visit coincided with a sunny day and the thought of eating in didn't enter our minds. The takeaway area wasn't very busy and there were perhaps only 2 or 3 people in front of us. Service was quick as there were 2 servers to speed it up. The takeaway food looked fresh and was replenished whilst we waited. We ordered a few things to share between us including 2 sausage suppers, a fish supper, an extra portion of chips, 4 buttered rolls and some juice (though I would recommend bringing your own juice if eating out). The food was wrapped up safe to keep it warm and the takeaway portions were decently sized. The food wasn't drowned in salt or vinegar and tasted fresh. We sat in the Wellington Square nearby and the food remained warm until the last chip was consumed. Definently one of the better takeaways near the sea front. *~*Conclusion*~* We will continue to dine at the Wellington Fish Restaurant as it offers excellent value for money and freshly cooked, tasty grub. Combined that with service with a smile and you are onto a winner! I did notice some ice cream on the menu but with the best ice cream parlour and sweet shop next door, no dessert would tempt me in the Wellington! Overall recommended!
