      A nice dining setting for people who like eating steak meals.

      Miller and Carter Steakhouse, Ruislip, London Introduction There are 28 Miller and Carter steakhouses around the U.K. I happened to recently visit one of their restaurants in North Ruislip. From my experience of going there, this was an enjoyable meal, high quality food and good service. The Miller and Carter chain are owned by the Mitchell and Butler group, who also run the Harvester and the Crown Carvery. The Mitchell and Butler also have other restaurants and brands under their name. Location. The restaurant is located in North Ruislip near the Ruislip Lido. There is easy access from Bury Street, with fairly good parking facilities. It is set back slightly off the main road, in a relatively leafy area, so it's general location is very positive. Décor/Ambience The main entrance was a glass door, leading into an outer lobby area which was well lit and appeared quite contemporary and welcoming. There was also an inner door led to the main restaurant area and bar. We could see an open plan kitchen preparation area in full view of customers. The first impression of the restaurant was one of warmth, contemporary clean and modern design. The various forms of lighting were well used to provide a well lit and relaxed ambience. The central lights in the ceiling were large square diffused lights, which also acted as a feature. There was also a selection of spotlights on rails, and wall lights as well as recessed spotlights. In addition the tables also had tea lights in red glass holders, and tables that surrounded the low wall dividing the preparation area and the restaurant area had decorative light fitments situated on the wall. The flooring was red and dark blue contemporary design carpet, which blended in well with some of the upholstery which had been used on the benching, and on the fabric seats of some of the chairs. There was a selection of booths and free standing tables, which not only provided an interesting and eye catching room setting. Some of the benching was upholstered to compliment the carpet; some of the benching was clad in dark brown leather, as was some of the chairs. All of this lent to a warm and relaxing feel to the place. The tables themselves, were dark wood with a high gloss finish. The cutlery used was contemporary in design as were the wine glasses. Good quality paper serviettes were used. There were no vases of flowers on the table, but candles provided a centre piece. The windows were dressed with modern wooden blinds, and various ledges provided good platforms for large decorative artefacts. The numerous wall art items were interesting and contemporary in design. In addition to the modern contemporary art work and pictures there were also sum large gilt coloured mirrors, which added to the overall design feature. The general relaxed feel of the restaurant was further enhanced by some background music, which could be heard but was not intrusive of conversation. Food Selection The menu had options such as Sea bass, Risotto, and steaks. There probably would be limited choices for vegetarians. Our Order I ordered from the festive lunch menu, which was 3 courses for £19.95p, and I ordered 2 chicken and chorizo skewers served with a salsa dip. My main order was a 28 day aged 8oz rump steak with fries and onion loaf. I could have upgraded to a sir loin steak for an additional £3. My dessert was a Crème brulee. My brothers order was from the main menu which was a barbeque chicken breast topped with streaky bacon and cheese, barbeque sauce, onion loaf and jacket potatoe, this cost £11.50p.Drinks such as orange juice and coffee were priced at approximately £2.50 each drink. My bill came to a total of £37.55p, but I did leave a total of £40 as I felt that the service and the food was above average, and definitely worth the money spent. A similar meal for myself without the festive lunchtime menu would have been more expensive. My opinion of the food My overall impression is that the food is prepared freshly, and cooked to order. The standard is definitely high judging by my experience. My starter that consisted of Chicken and Chorizo pieces were tasty, tender, and well presented. The dish had a nice and tasty salsa dip which was garnished with a large piece of red pepper and some rocket salad. This for me was well presented and a satisfying starter. Regarding the portion size for this starter I felt it was adequate, substantial and interesting to start my 3 course lunch meal at this restaurant. The skewer meat was perhaps slightly more meat than you would receive in a kebab at most takeaway shops. The steak meal was well presented on a large round plate, with the chips in a paper cone sat in a round bowl on the plate. There was a small pat of herbed butter, placed on top of the steak, which I personally would have preferred if the butter had been served separately as I do not like greasy food. The plate was garnished with half a tomato, a little piece of lettuce, and a piece of onion loaf, which I found a little bit too greasy. The chips were however, well cooked, crunchy and tasted delicious. The steak in my opinion, which I asked to be well cooked, was succulent, juicy, tender and very tasty. It had not been overcooked, and to my delight the steak was lean with no visible fat. It was obviously of good quality. The Crème Brulee dessert arrived a gratin dish which was decorated with strawberry half pieces and tasted absolutely divine. Having expected to be served a small ramekin sized dessert, I was pleased to receive a reasonable sized dessert which amounted to more than just 2 mouthfuls. My companion had coffee, and asked for hot milk to be served on the side, which was met with no hesitation. The coffee was freshly brewed and tasted fairly strong. The aroma was good, but in no way is the best coffee available. The chicken was good portion sized, covered with a thin layer of cheese and 2 or 3 thin rashers of bacon. Despite the cheese and bacon, it was not too greasy, as was the case when my companion ordered the same dish on a previous occasion. The jacket potato was well cooked, and of a reasonable size. Although, I would not have minded if the jacket potato had been a little bit bigger. The onion loaf was far too greasy and my companion personally question this is on the menu. There was a token salad garnish on my companions plate, however my companion did enjoy her meal, and felt that it was good value for money. Service The service was very efficient, customer focused and professional. On arrival, we were welcomed by a member of staff who showed us to a table that had already been prepared, but when we requested to move to another table, there was no hesitation in dealing with our request, and a member of staff had to explain that our chosen table needed to be prepared before we were shown to it. Soon after we had sat down, another waitress introduced herself by name and even recognised my companion from a previous visit. This showed keen interest in customers. We were shortly presented with the various menus to make our selection, and we were asked if we would like a drink in the meantime. There was no sales pressure to order straightaway, and everything seemed relaxed. Our orders were taken efficiently, were read back to us to ensure that they were correct. The time taken to receive my first course was approximately 15 minutes, which was followed by the clearance of the empty dishes, the main course arrived approximately 10 minutes later. However my companions food looked well presented, but the waitress decided to return my companions food as the jacket potato appeared to be slightly overcooked. This was without my companion making a complaint or observation. Obviously, this member of staff was aware and showed great attention to detail. Extra Information The toilets were clean and smelled fresh, and were well maintained and well lit. The toilets were fully stocked with paper towels, tissues, and a hand dryer From my visit, and my companion's visits, families are well catered for, and children of all ages are welcomed. From what I have seen there is no wheelchair access for disabled clients. Conclusion I would definitely recommend this steak house which would meet most people's expectations for different occasions, such as lunch time dinners, evening meals and birthday celebrations. As this was the first time I had visited Miller and Carter, I would definitely return in the near future. This restaurant ticks all the right boxes from start to finish what with the service and the quality of the steak.
