Mediterranean restaurant, this is simply a kebab shop that ushers you inside to sit down for over priced tae away food in cramped surroundings....after order i immediately regretted my decision. We ordered the large bottle of still water (£4), expecting a glass bottle of still water....oh silly mean supermarket own brand in its lovely plastic 1.5litre goodness was plonked on our table..classy. Minced chicken kebabs quickly arrived in front of me, rather than spend an evening in the toilet i simply left my plate untouched and paid the bill, making a swift exit out of the door. What a wasted evening, it was simply too late to indulge in one of the other delicious restaurants along the road of Mumbles.
I came across this delightful Turkish restaurant in the petit Victorian town of Mumbles in Swansea’s Bay area in the county of west Glamorgan. It is apparently the only Turkish restaurant in South Wales. It was a freezing Winters night around 10.30pm, we had finished a round of the pubs in the Mumbles area and were walking up alongside the pier. We wondered if we’d get a complete meal at this late time in this small town of Mumbles (which has a vast array of fine restaurants that are often fully booked or close early especially in Winter). We then stumbled across this Turkish restaurant called Mediterranean, which looked warm and cosy with dim lit candles. I thought they maybe closed as there appeared to be cleaning up, but to our surprise they were open and gladly welcomed us!! We sat downstairs near the window which offered a view of the pier whilst soaking up the warmth of the ovens, the aroma of the charcoal cooked food and the endlessly flickering candle light on our table. There was seating upstairs that offered a wider view of Swansea bay seafront from a large bay window - which would have been more clear and magnificent in the daylight. The Mediterranean restaurant is a fairly new restaurant only 10 months old yet offers a good variety of Turkish dishes. The food is cooked freshly on charcoal and served hot. All the staff are helpful, friendly and make you feel welcome. There is fair selection of Starters (MEZES) many of which are vegetarian, such as DOLMAS ; which is vine leaf stuffed with rice and pine kernels, or PIYAS, a lovely white bean salad with tomatoes, onions, potatoes seasoned with garlic and a hint of parsley), MANTAR TARATOR; comprising of lightly fried mushroom with garlic and yoghurt and many more. All the Starters are very reasonably priced at £2. Ahh!! Now down to the MAIN courses!! There is a large selection of kebabs at this restaurant. We ordered the well known Shish Kebab, which is cu bes of marinated lamb skewered and cooked over charcoal, this was served with a small portion of rice, bread and red cabbage and came complete with a separate colourful dish of salad in dressing. The other dish was Iskender which was an oven baked all-in one dish made up of charcoal-grilled minced lamb with Turkish pide bread in a special tomato and yoghurt sauce. Both the main dishes were tasty, well presented and the quantity was just right, not too large and not too small, again very reasonably priced at approx. £6 each. (Most other restaurants in the areas charge well over £12 per head). And the Grande FINALE.. Dessert. There is a small selection of Turkish sweets, such as rice pudding, fruit cocktail or slightly richer Kadayif (shredded pastry with chopped nuts) and Baklava (a sweet flaky pastry with nuts). They are also fully licensed and offer Turkish wines and Turkish beers (Efes) but I did not sample any of these as we had already done a pub crawl!! Overall a small cosy, friendly place to enjoy Turkish food with onlooking views of the pier.
