If you want to go out for a meal, amongst the many factors that affect your choice, an important role is played by the quality of the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant. You can have the one without the other but certainly you cannot enjoy it:However Ma Hubbards offers good meals in good prices.I don't want to sound like a cheap advertiser but I think that it worths a try. Ok-it's a bit far away from the capital but if you ever visit Derbyshire, you can take a look...
Ma Hubbards is a small chain of restaurants owned by the Mansfield based Great English Pub Company. The restaurants have been developed in a number of converted pubs in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, the newest of which is in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. The policy of these restaurants is to serve large portions of good food at very reasonable prices. Each restaurant can seat about 200 people and has waitress service, there is also a licensed bar. The main attraction of these restaurants is the main courses. There is a selection of about 20 main courses, which include meals such as: Gammon and Double Egg. 4oz Rump Steak. Chicken Kiev. Scampi. Cheese and Onion Pie. Cumberland Sausage. Roast Pork. Californian Rib Chops. Each meal is served with French Fries or potatoes and peas or salad. When you see your meal you know that you are not going to go away hungry. The meals are served on large metal platters and the quantities are always large. The food is always hot and well cooked. We have never been disappointed with a meal here and I think between us we have tried every one of the main courses. Each day they also have a few “specials” and these are displayed on a chalk board as you go into the restaurant. But the fact that makes these meals so attractive is the price, they are only £2.99 each, and on the evenings of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday they are only £1.99 each! When we were first told of these restaurants I must admit that we were very sceptical about what sort of meal we were going to get for £1.99, but we were very pleasantly surprised and have returned on many, many occasions. For the four of us to all get meals for under £8 is a lot cheaper than somewhere like McDonalds and the meals are a lot larger, there is more choice and you get to sit down in comfortable surroundings and have waitress service. At these prices you can see how tempting it
is never to cook at home. At times the restaurants do get very busy, but in the evenings we have never had to wait more than 15 minutes, and this gives you time to go to the bar to buy a drink. (The bar prices are very reasonable as well). There are starters, desserts and specialist coffees, (average about £2 each) but I must admit that we have never had any of these. You must be extremely hungry to have a three course meal here (in fact I would like to meet anyone that can manage that!). There is also a choice of about another ten meals at dearer prices such as a mixed grill (£6.99) or The Beast (24oz Rump Steak - £9.99). The restaurants are open each day from noon to 3pm and 5pm to 9pm, including Sundays. (The Mansfield restaurant is open from noon to 9pm on Sundays). The Sunday lunches are excellent. As well as the normal full menu there is also the choice of a Roast Pork (£2.99) or Roast Beef (£3.99) Sunday lunch. The plates are hardly big enough to hold the meal. The meals normally have at least three vegetables as well as roast potatoes, Yorkshire Puddings, apple sauce (for pork) and individual gravy boats. These are very popular, as you can imagine for this price, and we have sometimes had to wait over half an hour to get a table at a Sunday lunch time. During December, in addition to the normal menu, there is also a Christmas meal available at both lunchtimes and evenings. This is a traditional Turkey roast meal for just £2.99. This meal is turkey breast, roast potatoes, a stuffing ball, chipolata sausages, brussels, carrots, peas, gravy and cranberry sauce, yes all for £2.99. Christmas pudding with brandy sauce is extra at £1.99. On Christmas day there is a four course Christmas Special at £21.95 (Children £12.95). The restaurants are always immaculately clean and the staff are always very polite and helpful. Obviously the prices are cheap because the restaurants have a very fast turnover of customers,
but you are never rushed during your meal, and standards have not been compromised for speed. You may have guessed that I am a bit of a Ma Hubbards fan. If you are in this area, then go there for a meal, you will not be disappointed, and it will not leave a big hole in you wallet, and I guarantee that you will not go away hungry. You can find these restaurants at: Glapwell, Mansfield, Underwood, Retford, Edwinstowe and Austerfield. The two we use on a regular basis are the restaurants at Mansfield and Glapwell and I can highly recommend them.
