      A very pleasant North Indian/Gurkha Restaurant

      A friend of ours who works in Chesterfield had been recommended this restaurant so we all went along to try it one evening. The four of us all enjoy a curry and the idea of a Nepalese and Indian restaurant appealed for a change.

      Monday - Saturday- 5.00pm - 11.00pm
      Sunday ( Buffet ) - 12 (Noon) - 11.00 pm
      Closed only on Christmas Day

      This restaurant is in an old pub on the main road and it is run by an Ex-British Army Gurkha Soldier, Mr. Prem Bahadur Malla, of the 2nd Royal Gurka Rifles.

      The food is created by the award winning chef Mr Bishnu and the décor inside is welcoming and looks like a traditional pub but with cream walls and some photos of the Himalayas and various other north Indian scenes.
      The bar is still there as in the original pub and from the outside it could be any town pub dating back to the 1900s with not really a lot to make you think it is a Nepalese Restaurant.


      Although this is a review about the restaurant the owner is justifiably proud of his Ghurka background and on their website he has written a bit of background history about this famous regiment whose motto is "Better to die young than live a coward...."

      "The name "Gurkha" comes from the hill town of Gorkha, a western part of Nepal from which the Nepalese Kingdom had expanded.

      Although the regiment still exists the numbers have been sharply reduced since WWII and from 112,000 the numbers are now closer to 3,500. During the two world wars 43,000 men lost their lives.

      The soldiers are still selected from young men living in the hills of Nepal - with more than 28,000 youths tackling the selection procedure for just over 200 places each year. The selection process has been described as one of the toughest in the world and is fiercely contested. Young hopefuls have to run uphill for 40 minutes carrying a wicker basket on their back filled with rocks weighing 70lbs."

      We were welcomed and shown to our table which was nicely laid with table cloth and linen napkins. We had a great view of a photo of Mount Everest and the mountains around it from where we sat. The waiter came very quickly with menus and took our drink order. When he returned we asked him to recommend dishes which were specialties of Nepal to us as we wanted to try what they were known for.

      He was very good and explained which dishes were Nepalese and what sort of flavor they were and how hot so that we could make knowledgeable choices. We decided that we would choose four dishes and then share them between us so we all go to try them all.

      He offered to do us a mixed platter of the starters for us to try which we thought was a great idea. And then we ordered our mains.

      We enjoyed a plate with enough of each of the dishes for four to try. We had;

      Gurkha Aloodum -spicy potatoes cooked in an authentic Gurkha Style.

      Lamb momo which are Nepalese sort of steamed dumplings filled with tender lamb mince, herbs & spices, served with traditional Achaar or chutney.

      Panir pakora which is a cheese pakora`

      Vegetable momo similar to the lamb only veggies inside instead of lamb

      Nepalese Chicken Chilli which was a marinated Chicken tikka, deep fried cooked with onion capsicum, garlic and chilli sauce

      They were all tasty but my favourites were the panir pakora and veggie momo they were especially tasty.


      We chose four different dishes and three pilau rice and two naans to share between us.

      Kathmandu Gurkha Special which you can choose to have Mild/ Medium/ Hot . It was a chicken dish cooked in an exotic tomato and coconut milk sauce with a special blend of Nepalese herbs.

      King Prawn Malai Curry which we could have Mild/ Medium/Hot once again. This one was grilled King Prawns served with a mild Malai sauce with fresh Nepalese herbs and spices.

      Sag Panir which was my choice which is spinach & Cottage cheese cooked in Nepalese spices.

      Lamb Shank which we could chose in Mild/ Medium/Hot . This was a Shank of Lamb cooked with fresh cherry tomatoes, brown onion sauce, potatoes and a delicate blend of Nepalese herbs.

      We all loved every dish and there was plenty for us all. I am a bit funny with lamb but the others like lamb so I went along and I did try some and it was beautifully tender and the herbs really tasty. The prawn Malai was yummy and of course my favourite saag panir was given that Nepalese flavor. The chicken was also tasty and the coconut sauce was very rich and creamy.

      The dishes were all presented beautifully as in a fine dining restaurant which made it feel that bit more special rather than just a curry on top of rice in a bowl.

      The dishes were brought to our table with rice in separate dishes and we were told what each dish was and how hot it was too.

      They returned after about ten minutes to ask if everything was okay and we asked for another round of drinks but told them we were more than happy with the meal.

      The bill was brought to our table when we asked and with it were mints for each of us. We paid by card at the till by the bar and left a tip in cash at the table.

      We were happy with the food and the service. The staff were helpful, knowledgeable and efficient and the food well cooked and nicely presented.

      The actual building didn't really look much like an Indian restaurant from outside, in fact it looked like an old pub which it was. The inside too was not really obviously Indian or Nepalese apart from a few pictures.
