A lovely place to go for a family meal.

You truly need to be a hungry horse to stomach these big meals at such low prices! There are numberous pubs around the country , your nearest can be found at hungryhorse.co.uk and with all the details of the menus and prices. My local one is the Greengage in Ipswich or Bury St Edmunds Our favourite is The Thrasher in Ipswich.

      Our meals:
Myself and my husband had a all day breakfast and a 5oz rump steak cooked to order. We also ordered two large drinks, this came to a total of £14.75! What a bargain and we have been many many times since this!

      Service:
The meals arrived very quickly and the person who served us couldn't do enough for us!

      Quality of the meals:
The meals are delicious and even better so are the desserts. My fave of all time is the Chocolate Fudge Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream.

We go to a hungry horse now for birthday's and special meals with the family. Such a lovely place to go. With friendly and welcome staff.

      Disadvantages

      Avoid unless you're desperate

Hungry Horse pubs seem to be everywhere and everyone seems to think they are cheap, good value and good quality food.

I have a Hungry Horse a few minutes drive from me and have been there a handful of times. I like their promotions that children eat for £1 (with an adult paying for their main meal) during school holidays and also on 2 regular days a week. I also like the fact that they have plenty of booths for kids.

What I don't like is that they show cBeebies in the booths, ON MUTE. Whilst I understand that they obviously don't want to hear Mr Tumble full blast, it seems ridiculous as kids can't hear the show and get bored (which defeats the object given that the tv is there to entertain them whilst they wait for food). I also don't like the lack of baby changing facilities - nowhere you can change a baby and tiny cubicles which make it hard to go in with your toddler.

What I also hate is that EVERY time I have been to one, if you ask for a large diet coke with no ice, they leave literally 3 inches of the glass at the top empty. If you have ice, they fill to the top. Basically to save coke/money. It is ludicrous. I thought it was a one off but noooo, every time I go that happens.

I've been to a few Hungry Horses and cokegate is common. However the food is good value, they offer "big plate specials" (not that big but bigger than normal). Steaks are cheap, they have a good selection of burgers and desserts as well as normal pub food. The kids' menu is not very varied but there are healthy choices on there, although the only drinks are fruit shoots or ribena! There are lighter options if you're not very hungry and a selection of sandwiches, an all day breakfast and a few curries. There isn't LOADS on the menu but definitely enough to choose from.

What I do like is the kids' play area - unsupervised of course but plenty for the little kids to do. There's a park in the garden for the bigger kids but I have never used it as I just don't fancy my 4 year old being knocked around by the many kids that frequent it.

The food is not good quality. The mash is often hard with a peculiar taste. The peas are rock hard. Things are often missing (lamb shank with no mint sauce as promised for example). The chips are ok, the steaks are bearable and the kids meals are generally ok if you don't have mash. The desserts are nice but average. The all day breakfast is revolting - overdone cheap sausages, 2 stringy fatty rashers of bacon, 2 slices of almost stale bread, a hash brown soaking into the beans and becoming disgustingly soggy and the rest is just cheap.

Would I go there again? Er, no.

        not there best reaustrant

went to local hungry horse for lunch, having used the pub restaurants before, we thought we could not go wrong.
on entering the establishment it was quite empty! it was 1.20pm ish, should have taken that as a sighn, well we had a fine seat much to our joy.
firstly we ordered at the bar, our drinks 2 of them, we whent to take our seats' my husband orderd our chicken sizzlers!!! woooo they were deliverd to us within 5min!.
sadly the chips were a reheat job, peppers raw chicken cold!!!! and there was no sizzle to the plates or my appitite.
we did complaine...... how bad was that! fortunately we had a great waitress, who with her own eyes could see why we were unhappy, bless her, well she organised a full refund, as we could not face food after that display of rubbish on a plate, 10min later she came back to us with a complamentry meal for 2 offer for us.
great appoligie. but dare we try again? the reasturant was witney, the rowing machine!

Last week I ate at Harlow's Hungry Horse at the Moorhen. We have had fish and Chips up and down the country including dead fresh at Hunstanton and award winning at Aberdovey but the meal I had last week was superb. Well presented, crispy tasty batter, huge portions, chips crisp not sloppy, fish very white and flakey.Top marks for food there and prices rival the chippy takeaway..only thing I will say is the restaurant is concealed and badly signposted so you could be a very 'Hungry Horse' by the time you find it! Behind Harlow station.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        It's worth a visit.

When I lived back in Cheshire with my parents, we would go to the local Hungry Horse pub quite frequently. The local pub is called The White Barn, and it's been there for years, so I've been going since I was fairly young.
The interior is getting a little old now, but because of the low-lighting it's hard to tell anyway! There is a lot of exposed brickwork inside the pub which is painted red, and I think that the pub might actually be a listed building, although I'm not sure. Anyway, this particular pub is fairly pleasant, and I don't have any real complaints.

        The menu...

Hungry Horse is of course home to the big plate specials. I'll warn you now that if you order one of the big plates, you might have a hard time finishing it! I've always been really impressed with the meals on offer, as there is quite a lot of diversity for a chain pub, and the prices are very reasonable too. There is a lot of choice ranging from British favourites, such as the All Day Breakfast and the Jumbo Fish and Chip Supper, to dished such as the Grande Mexican Burrito or Chicken Skewers. I have had the Chicken Skewers in the past, and the dish was huge! I could only manage to eat one of the kebabs, so I think I would opt for something a little smaller next time. Prices of the 'Big Plates' range from as low as £5.99 for a gammon dinner, up to £13.99 for the Ultimate Sizzler. I doubt you would need to order any sides with these mammoth portions, but there is a good selection of side dishes available, such as coleslaw and corn on the cob - these are all very reasonably priced too.

If you don't fancy such a huge meal, there are a lot of lighter options available too, with a good selection of curries and burgers - so I would say that they is something for everyone. One thing that I would like to point out now, is that the vegetarian options do seem a little limited, so that might be something to consider before you dine there. There is a menu available to peruse on the Hungry Horse website, so it would definitely be worth having a look through that.

The pub has a variety of offers on throughout the week. The offers include:

        - 2 meals for £8.49 Monday to Friday
        - Kid's eat for £1.00 on Tuesday
        - Curry and a pint £4.99 on Wednesday
        - 2 roast's for £10.00 on Sunday

So there really are some fantastic deals on offer at Hungry Horse!

The quality of the food at Hungry Horse probably isn't the best in the world to be honest. It's pretty basic, so if you are looking for 'gastro pub' meals, then you won't find them here. I think the meals are pretty tasty though, and they fill you up with no problems. I've never had any problems with my orders here - I've never had to send a meal back due to it being cold etc, so I think the Chef's seem to be fairly diligent.
For the price you pay, I think the quality is generally very decent - so I would recommend visiting one of these pubs if you can.

I'd just briefly like to mention the dessert's, which are amazing! I have had the Millionaire's Big Candymania on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed. It's basically a massive ice cream sundae, which includes short bread, plenty of scoops of ice cream, toffee sauce, Twix bars, and cream. I would recommend sharing it though! For £4.99, it's a real bargain.

The White Barn also has a nice little beer garden out the back, which is great for the Summer months. In addition to the dining area, they also have a separate bar area, with big screen TV's for watching sport etc. I think you might be able to get snacks in this area, rather than full meals, but I haven't really spent much time in there.

If you would like to pay The White Barn a visit, then it is situated on Forest Road, just across from Cuddington station in Cheshire.
        The opening hours are 9am - 10pm Monday to Friday. 9am - 10.30pm Saturday. 10am - 10pm Sunday.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Avoid at all costs, eat at home if you to live without food poisoning!

I have never before written a review online, but after the abysmal service my partner and I were subject to, I feel compelled to warn others of this restaurant.
After moving house we decided to check out the new 'local' in Peterborough (the Halcyon). Big Mistake.
We ordered the Mexican Burrito, Big H burger with bacon and cheese, onion bhaji's, and corn on the cob. The plates were cold resulting in cold food, we found an unidentifiable insect in the side salad, various parts of the meal were missing, what was left was inedible due to either being undercooked, cold, or obviously microwaved multiple times. Some items of food that were served were not as shown in the menu pictues, namely the corn on the cob, at 79p a throw should have been atleast a half length, not 7 kernels wide! In the pictures, of which there were three, the corn is atleast double, if not treble this size. We were told 'that is a portion', they did not care they were falsely advertising it. Drinks that had been ordered, even though from draught were rather warm and served in glasses with soap residue in them! This rendered them undrinkable also - no replacements were offered.
We had also ordered dessert at the same time as the main, but wished we hadn't bothered. The chocolate fudge cake was not heated properly, neither was the custard. Working in a restaurant myself I know that all food must be heated to 75C to be safe. Tepid custard is not acceptable.
£20.01 was an extortionate price to pay for 3 onion bhaji's and half a burger - as that was all that was safe to eat or drink! When we asked to speak to the manager, the food was swiftly disposed of and we were ignored. We were then forcibly removed frothe restaurant after being accused of smoking at the table, regardless to the fact that I suffer from COPD and have enough trouble breathing let alone smoking!
I have ever been so insulted in all my life! Do not bother complaining to managers as they obviously do not listen looking at other reviews here, sorry this is long winded but I would rather give people the full picture for them to make up their own minds about whether to dine here or not. Xx

NOT THE BEST OF MEALS OUT, STRONGLY SUGGEST THEY SORT THE PARKING ISSUE OUT!!!

My local Fernhurst Farm has just had what i would say a lot of money spent on it, and is now a Hungry Horse, Hungry well that's what i was when i left....
I ordered the Fish chips & mushy peas, well the fish was full of bones ( yes i know to expect a few ) not only did i find bones, but a long back hair, as for the mushy peas well they were just a dried up hard pile of mush.
Complained but just got offered a sweet for my daughter no apologies and the food quickly taken away.
Next issue, trying to leave the car park, vehicle's parks everywhere even in no assigned parking slots, had my car scratch, by this time i was furious not only had i had a terrible meal now couldn't get off the car park and slight scratch to my car.
Not a very good experience, manageress called me to apologies wks later still waiting for my money back!!!

needs a good manager or chef to not run out of basic neccessities ie rolls and fresh salad

this is a new, refurbed hungry horse, recently opened, so we thought we'd try it out.we visited on tuesday 24th april 2012. my husband chose the black and blue burger, while i opted for the vegetable lasagne my daughter had a kids mash and nuggets. we were advised they had no burger rolls, and offered bread or pitta in place. the first thing that struck me was that when we used to visit another hungry horse after 3 options being "not available" we lerf, never to return. but this time we decided to order and eat. when the food arrived my husband big plate had about 6 chips, that looked only as what i can decribe as discoloured. irecieved my lasagne also on a big plate, wih a tiny piece of dried up garlic bread and a sprig of lettuce that had seen better days. i had ordered a side of chips, that were also strange coloured, like gone off potatos. the side of chips cost £2 and there were about 10 chips in the dish. why would a newly opened restaurant be so bad. not to have fresh produced delivered daily. im not over fussy, but won't be returning. very dissapointed.

I do like to eat in the hungry horse with my partners children but the only complain is I love my veg as I like to eat my 5 a day ..lol.. but do struggle with your menu as the only veg you have is peas and corn on the cob!! Otherwise it's salads which is not too good in the winter..lol!!A lot of places are the same but it dose not encourage people to eat healthly though which is Shame really as obesity is on the rise there should be more encouragement from eating places!!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Overall very good. we'll certainly be returning.

We are regular visitors to the Hungry Horse in Yeovil, Somerset.

Their menu offers something of a bargain meal out with friends, while maintaining fairly good food quality.

The menu consists of a bit of everything really, steak, chicken, roasts on a Sunday, curry, surf and turf, salads, wraps, garlic bread, pasta.

I usually opt for the surf and turf, which comprises of steak, a chicken breast, peas, chips, several pieces of scampi and some tartar sauce.

This comes in at around £8 and the last 4 times i've had it, the steak has been perfect, the chicken tender, the chips warm and most importantly fresh, and the overall experience very good.

Sometimes we have had to complain, missing items, steak over/underdone etc, but on the whole it is very busy, and they do generally get it right.

The food ordering system is a little flawed because it takes place at the side of the bar. unlike Wetherspoons where you can order food with drinks from any cashier.

It used to be that you couldn't order drinks with food, so ended up queuing twice. this is no longer the case. you now order both at the food line.

Overall they are good at what they do. They often offer 2 meals for £8 and other chain style deals. which are affordable, and worth the money.

Staff are generally very friendly, helpful and pleasant, and they have free WiFi on site. so you can hook up while you wait for your food should you want to.

I imagine during the day when quiet it might be nice to sit in there with a coffee and write on a laptop, or perhaps browse the internet. I don't think i would, it isn't Costa or Starbucks, but some people might enjoy that aspect of it.

My boyfriend and I went to our local hungry horse (the running horse) in Bracknell. He ordered a mixed grill which didn't come in cheap at £10. Not only had they left off some of the meat, but the rump steak was totally raw inside (which unlike other steaks, must be cooked properly otherwise it's too tough to eat). We told the waitress who simply shrugged, 'well what am I supposed to do about it?' I wrote and complained to them, but they ignored me. But they must've got my email as now I'm getting bombarded with spam emails from them with father's day meal offers and such like!

It was my birthday yesterday and we decided to go out for lunch to The Wheatsheaf Pub in Whitstable which is part of the Hungry Horse chain.

I was really looking forward to my lunch out as these days any lunch out is a treat but as it was my birthday I was hoping it would be something special and memorable. Well, I wasn't wrong about the memorable but special? No way, it was one disaster after another.

We arrived at the pub just after 1pm, there were three of us, myself, my other half and my 87 year old Dad. We found a nice seat by the window over looking the garden and thought this is going to be nice. The pub wasn't very busy and there were quite a few empty tables so we thought we would get a good service. My other half went to the bar to order drinks, I wanted a hot chocolate. When he came back with the drinks he said he thought he could smell coffee, I sniffed the cup and it was definitely not hot chocolate, it was the more orangey colour of coffee too instead of the more pinkier colour I was expecting. He took it back to the counter and asked them to do a hot chocolate.

When he came back with it I took one sip and the hot chocolate wasn't hot, it wasn't even warm, so he took it back again and had a moan about it so they said they would bring me over another one.

In the mean time we chose our dinner, Dad wanted fish and chips, I wanted tuna steak with added corn on the cob, and other half wanted mixed grill, so he went back to the bar to order the food. He was up there what seemed like ages as there was no one behind the bar serving except for someone doing my hot chocolate which seemed to also be taking an age.

When the woman finally brought the hot chocolate over I tasted it again but it was still just about warm. I was so thirsty by then that I drank it down in a couple of mouthfuls but it tasted horrible being so cool instead of nice and hot.

My other half came back from the counter and someone brought over a bucket with the cutlery etc in and asked how the hot chocolate was, so I told them it still wasn't hot so they said they would do yet another one. She fiddled about with the machine for ages and then brought over my fourth attempt at getting a nice drink and said I can guarantee that this one will be boiling hot, and what do you reckon? It was cold again. I told my other half not to bother any more and could I have a tonic water instead as it was making me feel a bit sick keep drinking cold cups of chocolate.

So off he went to the bar again to get me a drink, once again, no one there serving, then someone brings out two meals, mine and my other half's. and says is that all you ordered, just the two meals? I told her we had ordered three meals, my Dad's fish and chips was missing, but she said they had only cooked two meals and she would have to go and check what had happened. She asked if the hot chocolate was better fourth time round and I said no it was still cold and she stood there arguing with me saying it couldn't possibly have been cold as she had felt it and it was hot. At least my dinner looked nice but I was missing my corn on the cob, they had put it on my other half's plate with his mixed grill and as I don't eat meat (only fish) I didn't want it with all the fat all over it.

Five minutes later a different woman came over and apologised, said she didn't know what had happened but they hadn't ordered my Dad's dinner and hadn't taken the money for it but would get it cooked as quickly as possible and would not charge for it. Dad said can she make sure he just has fish and chips and nothing with it, no peas or anything. I thanked her and asked if she could get someone to serve my other half at the bar as his dinner was getting cold so she went to do it her self.

When he came back he was getting right fed up with it all, but went to tuck into his lunch only to find the chips were cold and rubbery and the steak was as hard as old boots. We really felt like just walking out but my poor old Dad was hungry and needed to have something to eat so as they brought his dinner our my other half told them about his dinner being horrible so they took that away and did him another one. Dad's fish and chips had another corn on the cob on it, so much for just fish and chips, with nothing else, but he gave the cob to me seeing as it was me who wanted one in the first place and ended up the only one who didn't get one. Only trouble was the knives they gave us were so blunt I couldn't cut off any of the sweet corn from the cob so gave it up as a bad job.

Well I had finished my dinner, Dad was half way through his and other half was just starting on his. He said the steak was just as hard as the last one but the chips were hot this time and he just couldn't be bothered to moan again.

I tell you, we could not wait to get out of there after we had finished, and will definitely not be going back again. I will be emailing the Hungry Horse head office today to have a good moan about how they spoilt my birthday and will edit this review if I get a response, In the meantime, I would not recommend them to anyone.
