123A Clarendon Road Kensington & Notting Hill London W11 4JG Tel: +44 (0)20 7229 1500 Fax: +44 (0)20 7229 8889 I visit London often on business and have had my share of overpriced and mediocre restaurants. It was nice therefore to find one that, while not cheap, serves high quality food in extremely pleasant surroundings where those of us who wouldn't consider ourselves as trendsetters would feel comfortable and at home. Anthony Worral Thompson who some of us may know as the chef from Food and Drink on TV has created in Notting Grill a steak house extraordinaire. There are a variety of dishes on the menu from hamburger to veal but I chose the rump steak to see if the meat lived up to the hype. It did in every way and more. Who needs a steak knife when the meat cuts like butter and the accompanying chips, which come as standard along with a bearnaise sauce, were the best I have ever eaten. My companion had a burger which she said would change a vegetarian's mind. Starter breads served with delicious olives and excellent olive oil added that extra special touch especially the crackers with fennel seeds which were both unusual and delicious. A well chilled bottle of chablis, too many Irish coffees and the meal for 2 came to just over £70. While the service was excellent the 12.5% service charge hurt a bit. I know it's not cheap but at least the food was of exceptional quality. I recently visited the Grill once again and if anything I think it might have got better! The service if anything has improved and the chips are still better than my mothers (sorry Mum). Having been to Langan's at Green Park recently and being slightly disappointed after all the hype, it's good to find a restaurant like the Grill which maintains quality standards time and time again.
