“ Tel: 01637 850793 / Beach Cafe & Bar on Fistral beach in Newquay, Cornwall „
One of the most visited places in Newquay is Fistral Beach, world famous for it's fantastic surf. As you enter Fistral from the town end, you'll be greeted with a few shops and bars where many pause for a bite to eat and watch the waves, but have a little walk along a bit further and there's another little gem nestled in the cliffs. . .
I have been to Bodhis as it is now a few times, however it has only been going a year. There was another cafe in the same location before this however, so if you've been over a year ago this will have been different management.
Bodhi's is open for brunch 10am - 12pm, Lunch is served 12 - 3.30pm and during the summer they open for evening meals 6 - 9pm.
Bodhi's beach bar is in one of the most gorgeous locations for a café I've ever seen, literally sitting in a cliff, not just overlooking the beach but practically on it! A lovely walk along Fistral beach will get you there but equally if you don't want to get sand in your toes, you can get to it from the road via some fairly taxing cliff stairs!
They have seating both inside for those stormy days and outside on the balcony so you can overlook the Atlantic.
The outside looks very much in keeping with the beach look. It's all wooden, and weathered like a little beach hut. Though is stays on the right side of the 'distressed' look and is not scruffy. It looks cute.
Inside they've predictably gone for the laid back surfer style. It's light and airy, with huge windows so you can get a great view wherever you sit. Classy beach scenes on the walls and modern furniture give this place a simple trendy look which is very comfortable.
There are separate menus for brunch and main meals and bear in mind you will only be able to order from the brunch one before 12.
Brunch - The brunch menu isn't extensive and contains the usual suspects, full English breakfast, scrambled eggs on toast and bacon baps but there are a few more unusual things not served in most of the greasy spoons too. I recommend the Continental Breakfast, which is croissants, parma ham and fresh melon. Yum!
Main Meals - There's about 10 main meals to choose from on this menu as well as some more mains on the specials board. It's quite a varied selection and I think there is something everyone would like. Burgers, Fish and Chips and of course the Cornish Pasty are all here, but there's also Risotto, Pastas, Salad and seafood.
Snacks - Bodhi's encourage those who just want a snack of a coffee and cakes and there is a good selection of sandwiches, light bites such as nachos or soup and some gorgeous looking home made cakes as well as smoothies, milkshakes and hot drinks.
Quality of Food
I've never had bad grub from Bodhi's. As I mentioned it's worth the morning walk along Fistral for the yummy continental breakfast. The portions are of a good size and their ingredients are locally sourced so the seafood is a must try.
It won't surprise you to learn that you pay for the location and views. While you can get a full English for £3-4 in many of the cafés in the town, here it will set you back £7.75. Also cheap burgers are a plenty in town too, and prepare to part with £8.95 here. Sandwiches are £5.75 and most main meals will set you back best part of a tenner. So I guess, a little more pricey for snacks, but not too bad if you're coming here for a main meal, and for the quality of food and the view to soak up, I think the prices are worth it.
I've had mixed service at Bodhi's. The staff here are clearly all friends and get along well. Whilst there seems to be a good atmosphere at the counter, this doesn't always reach the customers. The first few times I went I can't really complain about the service, but the last time the woman serving us was extremely miserable and we didn't even get a hello or goodbye / thank you on coming in and going out -something simple but makes a real difference to me. This isn't a restaurant as such but more a café/ bistro so there is no service included in your bill, needless to say no tips were left that day.
Events / Functions
Bodhi's are putting on various events throughout the summer including live music in the evenings. You can also hire the place for functions such as wedding receptions and parties which I think is a great idea for such a good location!
A lovely little café to sit and enjoy the views after a beach walk. Good food, patchy service but I'd still go back.
