AXE AND COMPASS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Dear Customers, I am writing to inform you of the changes which have happened to the Axe and Compass in recent weeks. The Axe and Compass has been taken over by new management bringing in, a brand new menu with fresh and exciting new dishes all from fresh local produce. The dishes are all cooked to order with new specials being added weekly. All dishes can be modified to your liking just by asking a member of staff when ordering. Food is served all day 12-9pm with Sundays finishing at 8pm. The menu on Sunday changes depending on what type of meat we have available from the butcher for that weekend. A fresh, new style of service and comfort with table service and large open fires has been added. Spacious areas for large groups or small cosy outlets for that romantic evening out. We have a wide variety of Real Ales, including local guest Ales, a brand new wine list and a choice of some great Lagers and Ciders. Free Wi-Fi is also available for all, with a great incentive of free refills on your coffee when ordered. Please feel free to contact myself on the number provided to book a table with us or just to pop down for a drink... Regards Richard Granger General Manager Axe And Compass 01455220240

in conclusion my visit was not at all what i would expect and i would strongly advise not to go ther

i rectally went for a meal at the axe and compass, i knew it had not long been re opened but that was no excuse for the standard of food and service they had given me. i went with my husband and my 2 year old daughter. On first arrival the place looked very dull and i noticed that the place was not as clean as it could be. the floor had dirt over it through out the pub and under some tables was food that looked like it had been there for some days. we found a table to sit at and looked at the menu, we could not find a child's menu around us so we asked one of the waitress and they said they would bring one over one. we waited for around 10 minutes and they brought over a piece of paper with scribbled writing on for what we could chose for my child. my opinion is that is very poor we could hardly read what was written and didn't know if it came with anything so we was left asking questions to the waitress who didn't know her self but we was not to bothered about that cause we knew she was new. when we picked our food we went up to order our food to find out that what we wanted they was not serving and the menu said on the top 'new temporarily menu' so we tough the food on there they would be serving? so that meant going back to my husband and picking what we wanted again hoping they were serving it! when we went up AGAIN to order they asked us what table we was sitting at, well we had no idea they had no numbers on how should we know? in my opinion is find a cheap shop get some wooden spoons and write tables numbers on and sticking them in a pot so your customers know what table there sitting at and nt having to count round from table one that they told you was! once we had ordered the food was quick to come out and while my daughter eat all of her food, me and my husband found that it tasted like it had just been reheated the veg tasted like it had been cooked in the morning and was a bit stale. the staff was quick to clean up and make sure that we had everything that we needed i was very pleased with that. when it came to paying for the food we had no idea that they didn't have a card machine! they should f let us know before we ordered our food or done a better attempt of putting up a notification instead of one in a place you would not see it. so my husband had to go down to the a5 to get some cash out! we had noticed as well that the owner of the pub was sitting on the bar stool drinking away very drunk and falling asleep not really keeping check of his staff and his customers he was also chatting very loudly to other men at the bar about his money problems he had with the pub and the cuts hes had to make with getting cheeper food not what a customer wants to hear after just eating? as we was leaving we had noticed a old man in the corner smoking, i know it is not allowed any more and i was more disgusted in the fact that the owner was letting him smoke while chatting away to him!

Not an experience to be repeated

22 years ago we visited the restaurant to break up a long journey. The restaurant was Egon Ronay awarded and the meal was excellent. We were in the same area and I have never forgotten the quality of the meal all those years ago. My husband reserved a table (there was no need as it transpired!). The pub had not changed decor wise in those years it was like being in a time warp. The awards had long gone. I sat at the first table at which the upholstered seating was very wet. It smelled of beer on my hand and I quickly moved. Another customer had the same experience. The waitress a good time later felt the seat and smelled her hand looked at me and said it was vinegar. The area was not sealed off, it was just left. The proprietor was sitting in the pub with friends and as he was drinking his conversation about the finances and staffing of the pub was clearly to be heardand very unprofessional. There was no credit card facility. The meal of mixed grill was truely horrible, and fat, gristle was left on my husband's plate. No member of staff asked if meal was ok, and left us with uneaten food at the table for rest of evening. We decided not to complain as the young staff were inexperienced and stressed, but to write our comments on this site as a warning. It is sad that this once excellent pub/restaurant has so badly declined but I am not surprised that it is facing financial difficulties, that the manager was expressing very loudly all evening. Very disappointing.

Need to improve quality of food and customer service

I went to the Axe & Compass today for lunch with a friend. I must say that I had some doubts about ordering food as I was walking through and noticed the amount of food that people had left on their plates that didn't look very appetising at all. I spent 20 minutes ordering food and drinks, time I would rather have spent catching up with my friend who was sitting outside wondering where I had got to! My doubts about the food were confirmed, the ham on one of my sandwiches was green and the chips looked absolutely disgusting! They looked like they had been re-cooked a number of times and were a very strange colour! When I complained the chap just said 'sorry about that, I like my chips like that'! Not quite the response I wanted! Needless to say I will never go back or recommend it to anyone!

Not sure if I would go again by choice, but of I did I would have the same meal as it was very nice

I visited The Axe and Compass Inn in Wolvey last Sunday for a meal with some family friends. There were six adults and one infant. We arrived at around 1pm and met with our friends in the garden. The garden here is very large, with picnic style benches dotted around, not too close to one another. This was ideal for me as I really do not like going for something to eat and hearing the conversation on the next table, I tend to not talk about anything personal in those situations because I know other people will be able to hear me too. There was no danger of that here. Plus the weather was lovely so we didn't want to be cooped up inside while the weather was so warm outside. That said, there was a private party booked inside so we would have not been able to sit indoors even if we had wanted to. We sent the guys in to get menus and drinks and to find a highchair. They were gone for 16 minutes, while we were dying of thirst outside! They returned with drinks, menus but no highchair. Dad said that the bar staff although not unfriendly were not particularly helpful and when he had asked for a highchair he was told 'they are about somewhere, you'll have to look for them mate'. Judge for yourself whether you think that is acceptable, good service or not, but for me it was far off the mark. I don't even get that attitude in fast food eateries. I would have expected someone to bring one to us, or at the very least tell us exactly where to find one. As it happened one appeared out of nowhere and was propped against a wall. Dad went to fetch it and brought it over the table with a somewhat disgusted look on his face, and rightly so. I have never seen such a revolting state. A child is expected to sit in a highchair and eat. It was so dirty. I always carry antibacterial wipes or Milton wipes for eventualities such as this but generally a quick wipe over with a baby wipes is sufficient. I set about cleaning it as best I could which took about 10 minutes. It was much better but really still quite gross. I set about feeding my son (who tends to eat about 5 courses, he is never satisfied) and then put him out on the grass to have a crawl about. There were a few cigarette butts about, but that was to be expected and I quickly removed them from his reach so he could play safely. FOOD I really fancied a roast dinner, being a Sunday and all. However, when the waitress came over to take our orders we were told that roasts would not be served outside, she didn't know why. So, I glanced over the menu again and opted for the homemade cottage pie, sticking to a traditional meal still! Other orders on our table were 8oz sirloin, omelette, gammon x 2 and some sort of warm salmon salad. The food arrived fairly quickly, was about 20 minutes. The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed their own meals and did swaps with everyone else to try (apart from the salmon salad which was, apparently, too good to share) I only tried the gammon myself. It was very tender and succulent and of a nice size. It was served with egg, pineapple, chips and peas. My meal, the cottage pie was very impressive; served with chunky chips and peas. The beef in the dish was clearly of good quality, the gravy was tasty and of a good consistency, not to watery, not to gloopy! On the whole my meal was delicious and I would definitely order it again. We didn't have puddings at all as we were all quite full but some of the puddings on the menu were chocolate lumpy bumpy cake, strawberry meringue, cheesecake, ice cream, the usual suspects really. TOILETS I used the ladies once. They were fairly well decorated and fairly clean, but looked like they were waiting for another; they wouldn't have won an award for the cleanest loos, but I have certainly seen an awful lot worse. They weren't so bad that I felt the need to report them to a member of staff. They were a bit smelly though. COST I didn't put my hand in my pocket personally so it was no issue to me, but I remember that the cottage pie was £8.95, the steak £13.75, the gammon was around £8.95 also. A fairly decent price I think. I don't know the cost of the drinks but I think they were fairly decent, the regular sort of price. OVERALL The food was very enjoyable, the service time great, the helpfulness of the staff questionable and cleanliness of the place, going by the highchair, appalling!
