      Restaurant in Sunderland

      Amore

I was recently at a leaving "do" in a group of 20 people and because the person involved was from Sunderland it was decided that we would eat in this restaurant.

It is known as Sunderland's "best kept secret" and even though we do know the area quite well, and I was getting a lift in, it was a bit of a nightmare to find. It is situated very close to the city centre on the main drag of the one way system and in amongst streets of terraced houses so even with a sat nav, when we first missed the turn off, we then had to go round the one way system again. Invariably I was late but so were several other people!

One good thing about the location is the fact that there is lots of free on street parking but the downside if going alone is that the street is very dark.

      FIRST IMPRESSIONS...

Once I was dropped off, I took myself into the restaurant via some quite steep concrete steps, and a small backyard area. Nothing too inspiring up to now, and definitely not suitable for wheel chair users. Once inside the restaurant, I was greeted by a member of staff who directed me in the direction of the table at the back of the second room. This was accessed via a double door sized opening so I happily meandered over, taking in the surroundings. The tables are all rustic and the floor boards wide, highly polished and I believe them to be the original floorboards as they are quite wide and uneven. It was these floorboards which could have been my down fall. As I got to the doorway I noticed that there was a rather steep ramp, which although there was a hand rail at each side, the hand rails didn't start until half way down the ramp. This meant that when I got to the ramp, and wearing high heels, I had to half run and half slide down the ramp. It wasn't just me who had this problem and this set the scene for the rest of the night as most of the people I was with were too afraid of falling or slipping down the ramp that nobody dared go to the toilet or the bar.

Saying that the whole place is warm, and inviting with a modern yet, rustic design. I like the fact that it doesn't seem to try too hard with the décor with the walls being painted or covered in different colours and the tables and chairs dotted randomly about, and all made of nice solid wood. On one wall is a large fireplace, and hanging on the walls are black and white prints of the Hollywood Mafia greats, Marylyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.

There is also a very comfortable seated area in the bar which is where we sat towards the end of the evening when we had finished our meal...here it was safe to walk to the bar and get a drink.

      THE MENU...

There are several available menus- the Christmas menu, A La carte, Happy Hour and Delivery. We chose from the A La Carte which is quite sizeable and available on the internet, www.amore11.com. There are pasta and pizza dishes, chicken meat and fish dishes and alsoseveral choices for vegetarians so whatever you are looking for, you are bound to find something you fancy.

I can't comment on the quality of everyone's meals as there were a lot of people. What I did notice was that those who ordered garlic bread as a starter were served with a huge pizza size piece of garlic bread which would have been nough for 2 or 3 people as a starter.

I chose Crostini alle Verdure Grigliate (V) Char grilled Aubergines and Courgettes served on Warm Toast with Roast Peppers and Melted GoatsCheese, costing £4.95 which was tasty followed by penne Amatriciana £7.95 which was served with plenty of bacon pieces although a tad too spicy for my liking.

      VERDICT...

We had a good night out at this restaurant. It is very tricky to find and the steps and ramp are quite treacherous- not advisable to wear heels.

The staff are friendly and pleasant and the service was good with there being just the right amount of time between courses. One thing which was good was the fact that they managed to get 20 main courses to the table at the same time.

The food is plentiful and whilst not the best I have ever tasted, it was helped by the fact that the whole place has quite a fun atmosphere.

Worth a visitif you are in the area, can find it and are in flat shoes, or want a drink after the meal

      Thanks for reading

      Daniela xx
