“ Brand: Sainsbury's / Type: Rice „
I openly admit that I'm one hell of a lazy cook. I don't do it as a rule! I'm queen on the ready meal and the other night I really fancied a curry! So I nipped down to my local Sainsbury's and picked this up for a pound! I was so impressed with the price of it! The Packaging: Purple coloured box and the front and the back of the box are the same visually. A picture of the curry is shown and I'm told it is Sainsburys Prawn Curry With Rice 'Prawns in a medium curry sauce with white rice'. There is a nutritional at a glance chart shown, I'm told that it contains no hydrogenated fats, artificial colours or flavours, that it is medium in the spice stakes and to keep the meal frozen until ready to cook it. Other information on the box includes advice on how to cook it, ingredients and allergy advice is listed, size of the meal is stated (serves one and is 400g in weight), and contact details for Sainsbury's are given. Nice enough box and open it up you are met with a large black plastic tray in there covered by a clear plastic film with the meal under. To Cook It: Well you can cook it in the oven for about 45 minutes or in the microwave for 8 1/2- 10 1/2 minutes and from frozen for the best results possible. Me And The Curry: Well I popped mine in the microwave from frozen and that was really simple to do. I only had to pierce the film lid and stir in once halfway through cooking and it cooked in about 9 minutes and as it did so I got a lovely curry aroma from it. When I fetched it out of the microwave there was my meal, piping hot. What you get is the curry and rice all in the same tray and not separated. So to get it looking nice and appetising is a bit dodgy because some of it mingles! However the rice is brilliant white, decent size, well seasoned and I found that with even cooking it in the microwave it didn't go at all gloopy on me and it was grainy and al dente just the way I like it. Not alot of it though, a bit less than half the size of the tray so you do get a bit more curry. The curry itself is a rich orange colour. I had about 9 small prawns in it which were well cooked and I could see some small lumps of red pepper scattered about in it and some shards of of onion and that was about it. It was a rich, well seasoned sauce with a hint of garlic and coconut flavouring to it, and I liked the rather thick consistency it had to it. Flavour-wise it had plenty going on in it too. Quite mild to my palette and on the box I'm told this contains a few ingredients including mango chutney but I couldn't detect any of that. To me it was a mild sauce with prawns really. Verdict: Like many ready meal offerings this wasn't anything in comparison to home made or a take away of course but I did feel it was made with quality ingredients and was a decent enough portion size wise. With a lot of dishes that have prawns in them I did find that these had some flavour and hadn't dried up or gone for leather. Not too shabby for a ready meal from Sainsbury's overall this one!
