Tried these a while back, nothing about them was appealing, texture, taste , all horrible and they weren't cheap. lesson learned.
This afternoon, I found these in the freezer, from which I assume was a shopping trip my great aunt went on. I'm no vegetarian but do eat veggie foods from time to time so I was curious and wanted to see what these were like, despite Linda McCartney products being generally hit and miss with me. The packaging is attractive, catches your eyes and portrays the burgers as looking succulent and juicy. You get 4 burgers per pack for an average price of £1.30 upwards and can be bought in most major supermarket chains which is a good deal in comparison to many vegetarian products on the market. You can either cook these in the oven or grill them. I chose to grill them which took around 10-15 minutes including being turned halfway through. No mess was left on the grill afterwards so I thought "Okay. These might be good." Sadly, I couldn't have been more wrong. The burgers were extremely thin, felt synthetic and had little to no flavour. I wasn't impressed by this at all. The burgers are relatively healthy only having 62 calories and 1.5g of fat with 0.5 of that saturated but sadly, this is the only redeeming part of the burgers as quite frankly, they taste horrible and are nowhere near as nice as the quorn burgers. I don't recommend these at all and will certainly be sticking with the quorn burgers in the future.
These veggie burgers were on special offer in my local Asda last week and as such I chucked a packet into the weekly shop. These were the frozen variety and were £1 for a pack of 4 (I believe they are usually around £1.30). We do like and regularly buy the Quorn burgers but I decided we should give these a try. The photo on the box makes them look very succulent and tasty, well done to whoever actually photographs them because I could not get them to look quite so impressive! They seemed smaller to me than the quorn burgers do, but they weigh in quite similar in terms of what's in them, a combination of soya protein, herbs and seasoning. Each burger contains 62 calories and 0.5g of saturated fat which equates to 1 weight watchers point per burger and keeps them pretty healthy. You can cook these either in the oven or on the grill. I chose to stick them on a baking tray for 10-15 minutes and checked them halfway through to turn as recommended. This was the first time I thought they looked a bit odd, there was like a brown puddle on the top of each burger which looked like it had seeped out of the surface of it. It looked like worcester sauce or something. Anyway, so I went to turn them over and they were well and truly stuck to the pan, which is something quorn burgers never do. I had to battle with them to get them off the pan and turned over and bits of burger were left stuck to the metal which was annoying. Once cooked I served the burgers on split burger buns with ketchup and some grated cheese. I have to say I thought they tasted very similar to the quorn version when eaten like this but my other half said they did not taste as nice and said he thought they tasted 'too synthetic'. They did seem juicier and less dry that the quorn ones to me but they do not taste any meatier. To be honest I think we will stick with the quorn ones in the future because these made a mess when cooking and were not as tasty overall. Also they are smaller and you end up eating a lot of bread with no burger in when you put these in a bun.
When it comes to Vegetarian food at the moment it's all I tend to eat. No I'm not Vegetarian but my mate who I am sort of living with at the moment is and as we go on holiday loads and at the moment I'm staying in her house so it's easier for me to assume a Veggie diet instead of messing about preparing two different meals (Particularly in a caravan lol!). So I have been eating loads of Quorn and things like that and for the most part I enjoy it. Healthy options, versatile foods... I'm quite happy and to be honest I even feel a bit healthier and not so bunged up as I once did! However I got fed up fast of vegetables in everything and so when I went shopping in Asda and spotted these at a pound a box I couldn't wait to try them out. Although I don't miss the taste of meat at all I do miss the appearance of it. I mean I used to love burgers in buns with some salad and mustard and all that lot on it and so when I saw these I thought it would be a great compromise and even my Vegetarian mate was up for giving them a go with me! The Packaging: Oblong box with a picture of the burgers on the front. I'm told that they are Linda mcCartney 4 Vegetarian Burgers and that they are free from artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and that they are Vegetarian Society approved and 200g in weight and there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there. Other information given on the box includes ingredients and allergy advice, a full nutritional rundown chart, cooking instructions and contact details for Linda McCartney are given. Nice enough and informative box this is! To Cook Them: You can BBQ these, or grill or oven cook them in around 10-15 minutes. The Burgers: Small and round they appear like meaty burgers really. Dark brown and rather smooth they are rather thin though. They cook with ease and as we have these rather often we now prefer to fry them in a little oil although instructions for this are not given on the box! However we find oil gives them a little moistness that they otherwise lack and they do tend to shrivel up under the grill or in the oven. Taste wise they are of course made from soya but in the main with these they taste well seasoned, meaty and have a nice light flavour of onion to them. They hold well when cooked and don't fall apart when handling them and out of these and Quorn burgers me and my friend are in total agreement as I type this review that we prefer these on taste and in quality! Sure they could do with being a wee bit thicker if you want to nit pick but they are easy to cook and great stuffed in a bun! Love them and in fact they are on the top of our shopping list to get next time we go shopping!
