A few years ago I was looking for some cous cous in the shops and as I'd never bought it before I wasn't sure in what format you could buy it in. I then spotted these Ainsley Harriot packs on the shelf and was immediately drawn to them just because they had a well known name on the front. I figured it must be at least ok if his name's on it! Well, I was right! As I was a complete novice at making cous cous I had to follow the step by step instructions on the back of the packet in order to know how to make it. The instructions were very clear to understand and simple to interpret. I followed them to a tee and at the end I had some lovely tasting cous cous to serve with some salmon I had. It really is as simple as emptying the packet into a bowl and pouring on a certain amount of boiling water and then it's ready 5 minutes later! It is so easy and straight forward to make, even for me! This version is the Moroccan Medley cous cous and I would thoroughly recommend it. When I emptied the packet into a bowl I could smell the herbs and spices straight away and they smelt lovely. It was even nicer when I had the water on it and it was all fluffed up. There is meant to be apple, tomato, sunflower seeds and cumin in this cous cous. I could certainly see the sunflower seeds and make out little flecks of the spices but I couldn't necessarily make out bits of apple. The smell of cumin was very strong though. It took the exact amount of time that the packet said it would and looked really good once I was ready to serve it. It also tasted delicious and I was really impressed with it, as was my partner. It wasn't soggy at all and wasn't too crunchy either, it was just right. I have since tried the Roasted Vegetable version and that was lovely too. They're now a regular feature on my shopping list. There are 100g in this packet and it sells for 75p in Tescos which I think is a great price. They're also available in other supermarkets too at a similar price. A well recommended product.
This little packet is a godsend! It is so easy for a quick lunch that I have it almost every day. It's very reasonably priced, around 50p in supermarkets, and is low in fat and calories. I'm quite happy to have it on it's own for lunch, but you could quite easily make it part of a main meal too. The flavour is lovely - very Moroccan and the pieces of apple and sunflower seeds add a different texture and little sparks of extra flavour. It's quite spicy but not hot. It is really easy to make, just pour 160ml of boiling water on it, stir, cover and leave for five minutes. I often make it the night before and have it cold the next day, it's just as tasty. This is my favourite of the Ainsley Harriet range, I have tried them all. It's good, healthy, filling food. I often buy plain cous cous and add my own spices for flavour but these sachets by Ainsley Harriot are surprisingly tasty and well worth having for when you are in a hurry. My favourite flavour is the lemon one but this one comes a close second. The cous cous comes in metal sachets which contain 100gs of the product (2 servings). It can be found in most supermarkets and is easy to spot as it has a black and blue pack with a picture of Ainsley Harriot on the front along with a picture of the cous cous. It costs around £0.80 for a pack but can often be found on special offers. To prepare, simply add 160ml of boiling water and leave for a few minutes, before fluffing it with a fork. The cous cous (made from semolina - coarsely ground durum wheat) absorbs the water and when you run the fork through it, the grains will be light and fluffy looking. The Moroccan Medley flavour is a tomato based base which is a little bit spicy and fruity tasting. It is a little bit sweet and really tasty, I was skeptical as to how good a dried flavouring could be but these sachets of cous cous are really very good. Cous cous is low in fat and a fantastic snack whether eaten on its own or as part of a main meal. It is extremely versatile and can be prepared anywhere you have boiling water and eaten hot or cold. It is also delicious and this flavour goes well with most dishes (I like to chop tomatoes and cucumber and add it to the cous cous then eat it cold for lunch) If you haven't tried this cous cous yet then you definitely should, it is tangy and tasty and so simple to prepare, 5 dooyoo stars! Cous Cous is such a versatile food to use, it is equally as good hot with a hot stew especially as a side with Morocan lamb or cold as part of a salad. I have used the plain Cous Cous from Ainsley Harriet but I much prefer this Moroccan Medley Cous Cous that he does. They are a good price at the moment as you can get them for two for a pound in Tesco which is a good offer. The cous cous is easy to make, just add boiling water to the contents of the packet and stir it allowing the water to soak into the grains for a few minutes, I do give it a stir every so often with a fork to keep the particles from going lumpy and it keeps the cous cous light and fluffy. This is a spicey cous cous and it contains sunflower seeds and apple pieces to give it a nice fruity flavour, when I make Moroccan lamb I always add apricotsto the lamb so the apple in this adds to the overall fruity flavours and it also has a tomato base to it as well which again works well with the Moroccan lamb. There is a bit of heat in the flavouring but nothing that is over powering to the taste buds. This is a nice easy to prepare cous cous which is very convenient and easier than preparing it from the start however when it is not on secial offer it would probably be cheaper to do your own even if you have to experiment a bit to get the spice mix just right. The only downside to this product is that you have to see insley big gurning grin on the front of the packaging.
As I have mentioned in some previous reviews, I work in an office where we are not allowed to have a microwave to discourage cooking smells from disturbing other workers. But it's also very cold where we live and I do have to work outside some days. On these occasions I often want a hot lunch and am constantly looking for lunch foods I can prepare using hot water, which we do have a good supply of. Ainsley Harriot Cous Cous packets are one of my lunches of choice. I think I have tried all of the flavours so far and really like them all. This review focuses on the Moroccan Medley variety. Moroccan Medley Cous Cous comes in a blue and black paper sachet with Ainsley Harriot's smiling face peeking out of it. I like the way this looks and I do somehow feel that with his warm smile to promote this product, the food will taste good and fill me up well. Perhaps that's silly but his sponsorship did go a long way towards getting me to try this product. To prepare this cous cous you simple add boiling water. I believe you are supposed to add 160 ml but I simply do this by eye and add enough hot water so the cous cous are completely submerged with about 1/4 inch of water sitting on top of them. I do this in a plastic container and then let it sit for 5 minutes so the grains can soak up the water. The resulting cous cous tastes very good indeed. It has a strong flavour almost like a curry but I believe the spices are quite different - I think it is called ras el hanout spices in Morrocco. What is different about this flavour of cous cous is that it contains sunflower seeds which add a crunch to this, along with appes that have been rehydrated to add a tiny hint of sweetness. There is a also a good tomato flavour in this. I really like Ainsley Harriot's food because he doesn't skimp on the spices and everything he makes comes out tasting strong and bright. These packets are currently on sale at Tesco's for 2 for £1 which is an excellent deal for lunch. Each packet supposedly contains two servings of 178 calories each, but I always scoff the whole packet myself.
This evening my daughter requested Cheesy crispy pancakes for tea. Really not one of my favourites but on a Friday I do like to let her pick what she'd like to eat. As I dont like them I rooted about my cupboard for something quick and easy to prepare for myself. Id forgotten that Id bought this Ainsley Harriott Moroccan Medley Cous Cous in a 2 for £1 offer recently in Tesco so thought Id give it a go. For those unfamiliar to it, couscous is a savoury food made of semolina. It resembles tiny grains, and is usually cooked by steaming or soaking in boiling water. The 100g foil pack states that it serves two but Im assuming that it means as an accompliment. THe preparation instructions are very easy to follow. Simply empty contents of pack into a bowl and add 160ml of boiling water. Stir and then leave for 5 minutes to absorb. After 5 minutes fluff up the cous cous with a fork and if desired add a knob of butter. I must admit that I didnt as Im currently on a bit of a diet (due to the fact that now my daughter has started school I can no longer blame the fat on having a baby lol). As I said its all very easy and I was able to leave it to one side and ensure my daughters crispy pancakes were accompanied by one of her 5 a day! After the five minutes I fluffed it up as suggested and plated up. There was no way it was going to stretch to serve two but it was OK portion wise for me. For such an easy to prepare and healthy low calorie meal, I was pleasantly suprised by the taste. I cant actually say wether its a true morrocan flavour having never tried it but this cous cous was slightly spicy with a tomato flavour and plenty of sunflower seeds. The ingredients actually state that it contains amongst lots of other things, dried apple (which I didnt taste), dried tomato(quite a strong flavour), Sunflower seeds (plentiful), onion powder (not overbearing), ground cumin (which at a guess is the spicy taste) and garlic powder (couldnt taste). Although its an Ainsley Harriott product its actually produced by Symingtons of Leeds. For those with allergies and intolerances this product does state that it contains cows milk and wheat gluten. THe product is suitable for vegetarians.It has no artificial colours, preservatives or flavours. In my quest to lose weight, I've been trying to do some more exercise recently. This has mainly involved going to the gym, but has also meant that I've tried to walk around as much as possible, as well as generally being on my feet. This meant that yesterday I decided to go shopping for a while in Edinburgh (partly because I wanted to shop, and also because it burns more than twice as many calories as sitting), and then walked from there to Asda. I don't know exactly how far it is from Princes Street to the Asda in Chesser, as I suppose most of you won't, but the journey took me roughly an hour, and I wasn't walking particularly slowly. Suffice to say, when I arrived there I was tired and hungry, which isn't the best state to be in for food shopping. Still, though, I was determined to find some low calorie and healthy yet tasty and cheap foods for me to eat this week, and I must admit that I did pretty well. One of the finds which I am most proud of is this Ainsley Harriott's Moroccan Medley Cous Cous, as not only was it cheap and low fat, it actually tastes really good too. The great thing about this Cous Cous is that it's insanely easy to prepare. All you do is open the sachet, pour the contents into a bowl, add 160ml of boiling water and leave it for five minutes or until all the water has soaked in. Then you eat it. Easy to prepare meals like this are great in so many ways, as although there are some people who can spend a long time preparing good meals from scratch, most people need food that's quick to make and eat every now and again. I'm not a terrible cook, but I'm not good enough to be able to make tasty couscous with Moroccan vegetables and spices from scratch, so it's great that I can just go out and buy this. In terms of calories, this meal isn't bad at all. I must admit that I was a bit disappointed when I got this home, as although the packet states that there are 176 calories per serving, it turns out that each pack is meant to contain two servings. I do like to eat a lot, I'll admit, but when you see a whole packet's worth prepared, you'll realise that only someone with a small appetite or who is sticking insanely strictly to their diet will only want to eat half of the packet, unless it's only as a snack. I happily ate the whole packet, and found that it was definitely enough for a lunch, and would probably be enough for tea, too, though I'd probably need a snack later in the evening if this was my tea. In total, I had 352 calories worth of couscous in this meal, which is great for me, as I'm trying to stick to between 1200 and 1400 calories daily. So, enough of all that, you must be wondering what it tastes like. Well, I'm happy to say that it tastes nice. The couscous isn't too hard or too soft, and the Moroccan spices and bits of fruit taste amazing, and there's a light spice to the whole dish, though it's not very strong so don't avoid this if you're not a fan of spicy food. The meal tasted fairly healthy and wasn't stodgy or over-filling, and definitely made me want to eat it again. So, in conclusion, this couscous meal was amazing. I am delighted to have found something tasty and diet-friendly that is easy to make, as well as being phenomenally cheap. This packet cost me 64p from Asda, though there is currently an offer where you can get two packets for £1, saving you 28p. There are several other varieties of couscous in this range by Ainsley Harriott, and after loving this one, I'm sure I'll give all the other ones a go, assuming that they're all low calorie too, that is.
