A very popular bar opposite the pier

Whisky A Go Go is located directly opposite the pier on the North Parade in Skegness. During the daytime it is the sort of quiet place that one might wander into for a coffee or a quick alcoholic drink but be warned at night time this place takes on a whole new persona and it is not a place for the faint-hearted.

I first discovered Whisky A Go Go late one Sunday afternoon when the black storm clouds that had been threatening a downpour all day finally burst. It was a rainstorm of enormous proportions and dressed only in Jeans and a T-Shirt I dashed for the nearest bit of cover, which just happened to a pub!

My first impression related to the size of the place. The tiny entrance squashed at the end of a run of amusement arcades and other bars did not suggest that the interior of this place is actually quite huge.

The bar is set out all on just one level with the toilets located downstairs but there are also steps down to the dancefloor, which is sunk below the level of the rest of the floor. The width of the venue extends over the adjacent building but it is the depth of the place that gives it its real size.

It was just my luck that Sunday afternoon along with all other afternoons during the week is happy hour time where selected drinks are on a buy one get one free offer. The name Happy Hour is actually a bit of a misnomer since Happy Hour at Whisky A Go Go doesn't last 60 minutes at all but on a Sunday it runs from 5pm until 7pm. On other nights it runs from 3pm until 7pm which is basically four consecutive happy Hours back to back. Initially I was going to opt for a soft drink but tempted by two pints of Carling for just £2.70 I quickly changed my mind. One of the problems with such promotions as buy one get one free offers is that one gets lumbered with two pints that quickly go flat. Fortunately there were four of us in our group, all drinking Carling so we just ordered two pints each, received four and split the cost.

Whisky A Go Go has a musical theme throughout. Signs on the wall promote "Award winning DJ's every night" and every wall is adorned with music posters and other promotional material. Each of the posters are very eye-catching and serve their purpose in keeping you amused and entertained whilst you enjoy your drink. Some of the posters are signed and they range from very new to quite old. I remember seeing an Elvis Presley tour poster alongside a poster for Take That's 2007 comeback album "Beautiful World".

The general layout of the pub is modern and quite open plan. The floor is laminated wood that is bleached almost to a pale yellow colour and this contrasts with the simple, yet modern tables and chairs, which are chrome and black. The bar is long and extends down two sides of the room. There always seems to be plenty of bar staff on hand so queuing times even when it is busy are not too bad.

From about 8pm this bar really starts to get busy. It is a popular meeting place and the groups of lads and lasses start arriving in droves. Skegness is a fairly typical seaside resort by day but it has in recent years built up a reputation as a venue for hen parties and stag nights. Some of the sights are quite amusing but I did find some of the outfits (or rather lack of them) a little over the top. Let's just say that after 8pm this is not the sort of place that you should take your mother to.

Around 8pm is also when the resident DJ starts playing the latest club tunes. Maybe it has something to do with the acoustics of the place or its size but unlike many of the other bars the music never actually seems to be unbearably loud and you can just about, should you wish, have a conversation with your friends over the top of it.

By around 9pm the first of the revellers have usually become inebriated enough to make tentative moves towards the dancefloor. It usually just takes that first brave (or drunk enough) soul to start to dance and the rest of them follow like sheep. For another hour or so the place is usually packed to capacity but then as quickly as they arrive everyone seems to leave and by 10pm it is quiet once again. This might be because some of the groups are quite large (20-30 lads or girls) so it only takes a couple of groups to leave at the same time for it be noticeable. However by midnight the crowds are back again having discovered what the other bars have to offer the general opinion is usually that Whisky A Go Go is one of the best around. It also seems to have a more liberal attitude towards allowing large groups through its doors. There are plenty of bouncers and security on hand but they are whilst trouble of any kind is not tolerated they are usually discrete.

Another reason why this venue is popular is also because it entry is always free. Live bands often play in the early evening and even when there is a live band playing entry is still free.

Overall Whisky A Go Go is a good venue but obviously it will not appeal to all.
